Who is going trick-or-treating? What's your costume?

Vic Sage

My 5-year old boy is going as the FLASH (i told him to go as Barry Allen, but he's insisting on being Wally West. Kids. whaddyagonnado?)

My 9-year old girl is going as a "pink lady" from GREASE (she looks adorable. But i hate that show.)

My wife was originally going to go as a devil woman, but she didn't like the costume, though i liked it fine. (she was going to send it back, but i made her keep it... for special ocasions...). So now she's going back to her standard "witch' outfit.

This year, I've decided not to go as Al Borland (from HOME IMPROVEMENT) again. Instead, i'm a swashbuckling pirate... AAAAARH, matey!

How about youse?

Middle-aged suburban dad.

My daughter is going to be a pirate, and my son is going to wear a weird mixture of odds and ends: wig, funny glasses, pig nose, etc.

I'm gonna dig out the Wolfpack mask.

Junior's going as a skeleton -- got a black shirt & pants with the bones on them.

The little tot is going as a baseball player. Mets, of course. She'll probably grow up to hate baseball so this is my only chance.

Impulse2 is going as Harley Quinn. She spent a lot of time making her costume, and she's quite proud of it.

My 13-year-old is recycling his Wizard's cape, and MK is going as a Met. Neither the boys nor myself felt like getting too creative over Halloween this year.

I'm giving out full-sized Hershey bars, if any of you feel like ringing my doorbell tomorrow night.

do you accept trick-or-treaters by mail?

ScarletKnight41

No - you need to press our "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" doorbell to get the treats.

Oct 30 2006 12:45 PM

The kids are going as the Pink and Red Power Rangers.

For me, if I'm home in time, it'll be black t shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, red sunglasses...Bono.

Tomorrow's Mr. cooby's birthday. We're having ribs and pumpkin pie, but not handing them out.

Got an assortment of candybars for that. Sometimes I wear a witches hat when I open the door, but I don't fool anybody

dangit! i was gonna go as flower power...

i think i'll end up answering the door as clark kent this year. i'm not sure if im going to be going to any halloween parties this year. a buddy of mine had the lack of wisdom to schedule his halloween party for late on November 4th.

so there's a really good chance that i won't be able to go.

My son did that when he was a baby too...forgot about that! I made it out of a black sweatsuit and afterwards, took the bones off and voila! a new outfit.

We cheaped out and bought our outfit at the store. But he can wear the sweatshirt anytime.

Well, I'm not really going trick or treating. I'm just gonna stand around my house and scare the shit out of everyone, I'm being Jason Vorhees, but the mask I bought looks like a Michael Myers mask so I'm going with that, all black is a must :P.

The last time I dressed up for Halloween was for a party many moon ago
when Married With Children was still popular. KB, two friends of ours, and
I went as The Bundys. I was Al.

We get little action on our street trick or treaters wise. Changing times have
come along and the church up the street throws a big party for the kids with
stuff to do that I guess is more fun for them than going door to door.

Marvel wins!

i'm suprised Wolverine isn't on the list though.

for the adults, i'd think Dominatrix would be there, and if its included in "hooker" thats a pretty low percentage, they need to poll more college students

I was trying to go as Hardy Jenns. But as I started donning retro-'80s accoutrements, I realized I had more of a retro-fifties-channeled-through-retro-'80s thing happening, so I switched horses mid-stream and I'm dressed as Brian Setzer, sort of post-Cats and pre-BSO.

when we have kids, i'll be heartbroken if the majority of their trick or treating is to be done in a mall.

are the streets of suburbia really that unsafe for our parentally accompanied children (and our neighbors that much less accountable for the safe dispensation of candy than an anonymous store clerk)?

or are parents too busy to take their kids out at night, and find the mall much more convenient - and they can get a strarbucks along the way.

the mall. nothing says spooky like ample lighting, glass storefronts, and wide tile or marble floors dotted with scented eye-pillow kiosks.

Thing is, when I was a kid, we knew, or my parents knew, everybody in the neightborhood. Part of what kept you in line is that if you were misbehaving on another block, a lady would poke her head out the door and say, "Don't make me call your mother, Edgy." And even if you hadn't seen that lady for six years, you beleived that she knew your mother and they were on the same side.

Maybe it's because I live in the city, but people seem more private, and neightbors seem more a mystery to one another, these days. A mystery and a threat.

and what better way to remove that veil than to take your kids to their door and beg for candy?

and its not like there's anything to the whole tainted candy hysterics. and if you're gonna snatch a kid, its prolly better to do so when the streets aren't bustling with activity like they used to on halloween.

Last year, trick-or-treating with my kids, one of the neighbors answered the door wearing a sexy cat costume and holding a big bowl of Nestlé Crunch bars.

The image lingered with me for the remainder of the evening. I wanted us to do all of our trick-or-treating at that house.

MFS62
Oct 31 2006 10:34 AM

I may be taking my grandkids around our neighborhood tonight.

There are several houses where, after the kids have said "trick or treat" and received candy, I have said "trick or beer" and received beer.

Those are good neighbors to have.

And, before you ask, I'm not telling you where my neighborhood is. :)

thats not just your perception Edgy, studies have shown that people in more urban (it may have been "more heavily trafficked") areas know less of their neighbors than people in suburban or rural areas.

Willets Point

Not MSF62's neighborhood.

MFS62
Oct 31 2006 03:25 PM

My neighborhood is not urban.
So it is consistent with that study.

When we first moved up here, the town didn't even want to put a light (for illumination, not a red/green) at the dangerous intersection of our street and the main road because it would be "too much like the city". (That is an exact quote from one of the opponents.) It only took four or five years for one to be installed.

When we lived in the City, our building would have a sign up sheet. We would take the kids to the apartments on that list, and that worked out really nicely.

Also, there was more traditional trick-or-treating on 69th Street between Columbus and CPW, which was always fun.

two of the first four kids to stop by my door last night were dressed as yankees - a-rod and sheffield. i figured the costumes were ironic.

of course the kids were only, like 8, so probably not. also they had the names on the back, so that's kinda silly.

at least i didnt have to give out any candy to a jeterphile

MFS62
Nov 01 2006 09:30 AM

Several kids stopped by my house wearing Yankee caps.
As I dropped a pice of candy into their bags, I told them "If that had been a Mets cap, you would have gotten two pieces".

Didn't have to beg for alcohol. Since those old "trick or beer" days (did I say it was 20-25 years ago?), one of our neighbors has carried on a tradition. He sits on his front lawn, has a fire going in one of those portable fire places, and has candy for the young'uns, soda/ diet soda for those who prefer that (he has also had hot coffee or cocoa on chilly nights) and a nip of holiday spirits for the adults. In the past it has been things like peppermint schnapps. Last night it was blackberry brandy.
He is a nice man.
