My computer is an idiot.

well, ok. maybe that's unfair. i'm not certain the porblem is with my computer, or my ISP, or whatever. but i've noticed a rather peculiar thing.

to set the stage, i'm browsing the internet with mozilla firefox, and until today was running, i guess, v1.0, but to day upgraded to 2.0 on my home computer, to test a theory.

also, i've been looking into getting a new computer or two - one for me, one for my wife. my current computer can trace its roots all the way back to 1993 and my first 386DX40. through a series of rolling upgrades, case swaps, and near-complete overhauls, it has progressed into the new millennium, and has made it more than halfway through the first decade. teh wife, she's always bought dell. after 13 years of upgrading my own computer, and becoming more and more aware of the fact that i'm no longer knowledgeable enough to fully debug and resolve many hardware and software conflicts, i've decided that maybe my next computer shoudl be built for me.

so we're going with dell.

and as i use this computer to navigate dell's website, to the "build your own" section, the internet invariably craps out.

now, we've got a DSL line coming into the house, and there's a tree branch resting on the incoming line, and every now and again, the internet drops out, and we'd been attributing it somehow to that tree limb that we need to get trimmed, but lately i think that i am somehow causing the problem.

see, this isn't the first time, either... a few months ago, i was searching homedepot.com for "log" in the hopes of finding a rack for firewood storage, and the internet crapped out on that, too. but i called that bad luck and moved on with my life.

now, though, with dell.com, in building a computer, there's a long list of things that you click through, so that its easier to notice that the internet keeps on crapping out. so i click on the build your own, and can get no more than five clicks, usually only one or two, before the connection light on my modem goes off, and i have to wait for the internet to come back before i can click again.

i've never made it through a full system build yet.

but... i have been able to breeze through the build-your-own process on internet explorer, and my wife is able to build as many computers as she can stand to using her computer, browser independently!

and the new versionof firefox does not make the problem go away...

so now i'm left wondering...

what the fuck kind of evil, messed up computer did i make throughout these many long years? and is there anybody out there possibl smarter than i who can think of one single good reason why browsing a specific website on a specific browser on a specific machine would cause the internet to go down?
