Veteran's Day Observed and Unobserved (split from APNP)

My kids are off from school today and tomorrow for the NJ Teacher's Convention.

When I was getting my nails done yesterday, the nail ladies were discussing how tons of teachers got their nails done the previous day so they would be ready to go to Florida for the long weekend.

It seems to me that teachers should be making more productive use of their time off, considering the reason they have the time off is that they are supposed to be attending their convention.

Yeah, typically all they do is sit around and eat bonbons

I know they work hard. But this is a ridiculous time of the year for the kids to have two days off. Why not just skip this boondoggle convention and give families a full week off in February instead of this long weekend around Presidents Day?

Between conference half days and Thanksgiving, November is already disjointed enough. Having two days off in addition is just silly.

Tomorrow's a holiday.

Convention = Union perk/boondoggle

What holiday is tomorrow?

Saturday is Veterans Day. One of the few holidays that don't migrate to the nearest Monday. My bank will be closed on Saturday, and I don't think there will be mail delivery either.

Veteran's Day observed.

I didn't know it was being observed on Friday.

So which day is there no mail delivery?

I was planning on going to the bank on Friday to get my "yens" because they're closed on Saturday.

When Chuck Norris observes a holiday, the holiday is paralyzed by fear.

I've seen signs on banks & libraries saying 'Closed Saturday'.

Vet's Day was one of those where they originally tried obseving it on the nearest Monday but veterens groups objected, saying that the '11th minute/11th hour/11th day/11th month' thing was sacred and shouldn't be messed with for convenience.
Ergo it was quickly changed back.

Looks like USPS is delivering Friday but not Saturday.

I don't know about the banks. All I know is that I'm not going to work tomorrow. Scarlett can look at me in disdain.

I think veterans are worth two days of appreciation, so to all the veterans out there, Happy Birthday!

I hope that the syndicate runs a Peanuts strip that has Snoopy talking about quaffing a few root beers with Bill Mauldin.

They already get Memorial Day, Armed Forces Day and now this--geez louise, you'd think they put their lives on the line for our freedom or something.

Well, they don't get Memorial Day until they're dead.

Well how do you do, Private William McBride
Do you mind if I sit here down by your grave side?
And I'll rest for awhile in the warm summer sun,
I've been walking all day and I'm nearly done.
I see by your gravestone you were only 19
When you joined the glorious fallen in 1916.
Well I hope you died quick and I hope you died clean
Or, Willie McBride, was it slow and obscene?

Chorus:
Did they beat the drum slowly?
Did they sound the fife lowly?
Did the rifles fire o'er ye as they lowered you down?
Did the bugles sing 'The Last Post' in chorus?
Did the pipes play 'The Flowers o' the Forest'?

And did you leave a wife or a sweetheart behind?
In some faithful heart is your memory enshrined
And though you died back in 1916
To that loyal heart are you always 19?
Or are you a stranger without even a name
Forever enshrined behind some glass-pane
In an old photograph torn and tattered and stained
And fading to yellow in a brown leather frame?

Chorus

Well the sun's shining now on these green fields of France,
The warm wind blows gently and the red poppies dance.
The trenches are vanished long under the plough
No gas, and no barbed wire, no guns firing now.
But here in this graveyard it's still No Man's Land
The countless white crosses in mute witness stand.
To man's blind indifference to his fellow man
And a whole generation who were butchered and damned.

Chorus

And I can't help but wonder now Willie McBride
Do all those who lie here know why they died?
Did you really believe them when they told you the cause?
You really believed that this war would end war?
But the suffering, the sorrow, the glory, the shame -
The killing and dying - it was all done in vain.
For Willie McBride, it's all happened again
And again, and again, and again, and again.

Chorus
