Why is Who is Who on the CPF...

This might be fun, some are obvious and are probably boring (i.e. mine) but I'm sure there are some interesting stories behind the handles here, and if you been around since the old days, do tell about the old MOFO handles as well.

SteveJRogers
My name. Plain, simple, generally what I use on forums and lists on the internet. Not sure why the J got in there, never meant to be "hip" ala "Steven A. Smith" but I always liked how the J looked right in the middle whenever I sign my name, either Steve or Stephen. Well like I said, rather boring story. I was on a comics board once though and someone replied saying "Hey, the Captain's middle name doesn't start with J" to which I just had to snark back "Yeah I know, except I'm not The Cap, I really am Steve Rogers"

MLBaseballTalk
I used this on EZboard because I had SteveJRogers as an account, not sure where it was or what boards are linked to that name, but the idea was that I'd use that handle for all boards related to baseball on EZBoard using a MLBaseballtalk@gmail.com account. I've since abandoned that idea and just tried to get on them as SteveJRogers or SteveJRogersJR (I really am a Jr. BTW) After about 450 some posts here I just decided that it be easier just to go back to the actual name rather than a handle. Again I know, rather boring, well hopefully thats the last of the boring ones =;)

Allright, lets see some stories!

But does that explain why we are who we are?

That's like asking, "Why is there air?"

(it's there to blow up volleyballs and basketballs, but that's not important)

Do we know how many, and which, of those old screen names are still active on this new CPF board?
Not the posters, but as valid logon IDs.

Wicked awesome swing.

Mine comes from a typo.

I was participating on the www.shakespeare.com board (long deceased) back around 1998. Someone had come up with a particularly absurd idea as to how Shakespeare didn't write Shakespeare (he did; all of it except for those written by Norman Voles and his wife). You were allowed to pick a username for each post, and I planned to write "Reality Check."

I accidentally typed in my own first name, and RealityChuck has been my nom de net ever since.

Benjamin Grimm

When I first discovered this place, there was a poster named Norrin Radd. (He's still here, but under a new name.)

That inspired me to pick a Marvel Comics name of my own, but since it was ezBoard back then many of the names I tried were already taken. Yancy Street Gang was the first one I found that was available. (I don't remember all of my other attempts, but I do recall trying Mad Thinker and Red Ghost.

Of course, once we moved over here I could have chosen just about any name I wanted, but I decided to stick with the one I had been using.

Ah, why? Reading, it's forthemental.

K&C are my real initials, my nif's call me KC, it say's KC on my parking spot
at work, I have a dormant web-site residing at kcmets.com. Some people
have come to call me Kase, even some nif's, thanks to tail-gaiting with the
Diamond Knights often.

I assume they all are, Bret Sabermetric still shows up in the Member List. For reasons unknown to me I guess if you aren't a spammer your logon ID sticks no matter what. I've asked that MLBaseballtalk be deleted or declared inactive because I thought it was a waste of something or another in terms of bandwith and I guess its not as bad as I'd thought.
.
Maybe it's just for this particular server's software and other UBB software packages it is a bigger deal when it comes to inactive or banned members.

I know I do see posts by inactive/banned members on sites where it's the username and instead of the usual stuff its either a ---- or "unregisterd" or another sign that the user is no longer active or welcome at that community.

Ah well

Looking for a new handle-- any and all suggestions will be considered. will I lose my posting level and be sent back to batboy status? If so, all bets are off.

I feel like I'm stepping on the Rockin' Doc's toes and don't want to confuse any posters (but I'll take credit for his savvy ones and blame my sad ones on him).

Willets Point
Nov 12 2006 02:19 PM

Being a Mets fan and someone who's rather geeky about public transit (especially subways/rapid transit), naming my self after the stop closest to Shea Stadium was a natural match. I actually didn't know about Willets Point Boulevard or the poorly paved area with all the chop shops being called Willets Point when I adopted the name, but somehow the low-rent aspect adds to the mystique for me.

Giant Squidlike Creature
Nov 12 2006 02:26 PM

Giant - that's bigger than you, much bigger, and don't forget it.
Squidlike - that's like a squid, in fact like The Squid, the ur-Squid and you don't mess with that.
Creature - Something that's created. And in this case something that's created to cause destruction!

Mine goes back about 20 years.

I have blonde hair and I wear glasses.

At one point my hair was a bit unruly and my glasses were round with black wire rims.

I was at a Halloween party with some friends. Everyone was wearing a costume except my friends and me. I was wearing a black mock turtle neck long sleeve tee.

Some guy walked up to me and said 'Dude, awesome Andy Warhol.'

My friend Max fell on the floor laughing, the nickname was born and I've been 'soupcan' ever since.

Anybody that knows me calls me that.

Mine is just rather mundane and dumb, when I first started on message boards I wanted to express that I was Irish and a Mets fan...somehow it came out as MetIrish.....

ScarletKnight41

Scarlet Knight - because I go to Freakin' Rutgers.

41 - for some old ballplayer.

DocTee - "Looking for a new handle-- any and all suggestions will be considered. will I lose my posting level and be sent back to batboy status? If so, all bets are off."

With a new handle, you start again as Jim, the monstously huge batboy.

DocTee - "I feel like I'm stepping on the Rockin' Doc's toes and don't want to confuse any posters (but I'll take credit for his savvy ones and blame my sad ones on him)."

Don't worry about that. I have never felt that your name too closely resembles mine. I don't think that there should be any confusion. Not that you need my blessing or anything, but if you like your chosen screen name, then continue to use it.

Rockin' Doc
Nov 18 2006 09:29 PM

Rockin' Doc is a nickname given to me by my best friend because of my interest in music.

The Hot Corner was the name I adopted on the EZBoard CPF because I could no longerremember my old password for Rockin' Doc. The Hot Corner arose from my having spent a great deal of time (from the ages of 6 to 18) playing third base.

That was just an unexpected benefit.

SwitchHitter

Astro Annie - When AstrosDaily.com had a forum, I posted under my real name. But I kept giving love to a couple of nobodies named Barry Wesson and jason Lane. And the mod asked me if I looked like Susan Sarandon. So I join ezBoard and i need a name. I want it to be something to do with the Astros but not to look like anyone else'se name. And I thought of that comment by Ray and so I became Astro Annie.

SwitchHitter - I hang out with you guys a lot. And I've actually come to like and respect the Mets because of hanging around with y'all. I still bat stronger from my Astros side though.
