Oh, Oscar, Oscar, Oscar!

Here's the day they filmed the Odd Couple sequence at Shea, when Felix makes Oscar miss Bill Mazeroski hitting into a triple play.

I can't recall the last time a November 13 came around that I didn't think of Felix and Oscar.

It's strange that they decided to include the date in that opening narration. Not so strange is that Odd Couple fans have it stuck in their minds.

Including the date was a brilliant bit of writing, since it served not only as exposition and lended a bit of "documentary" feel to it, but it put you into the mindset of Felix Unger, who we know will never forget the date.

The only problem being that they then strayed from the script a number of times over the course of the show; by having Felix & Gloria split up while on vacation, having flashbacks where Felix & "his childhood friend" Oscar meet at various times in their lives, etc.

Not that I'm being picky or anything.

Yes, for people who care about continuity, The Odd Couple must have been maddening.

Sitcoms, I think, pay more attention to continuity than they once did, even though they have fewer viewers because of the explosion of cable channels (and pay-per-view, and DVD, etc.) I remember that there were hardcore Friends fans who would nitpick over the smallest continuity errors. (Don't ask me for examples; I don't run with that crowd.)

I also remember in the first year of Fraiser, there was an episode where Ted Danson guest starred as Sam Mallone. He and Frasier's dad exchanged a few lines that allowed them to clear up a continuity problem from early in the Cheers run where Fraiser had apparently said that his father had died.

I read a web article on The Odd Couple where they blamed the faulty continuity on the fact that there were different writing teams, and there wasn't a producer with an iron fist telling them that they had to adhere to a certain time line.

Purported "first meetings" between Felix and Oscar included meeting up as kids at the Chicago World's Fair; meeting up in the army in the flashback episode in which Oscar marries Blanche; and meeting up as jurors at the Leo Garvey trial (which I saw about 50 times before understanding that the episode is an homage to 12 Angry Men; look closely at the guy who wants to beat Felix up...20 years later he would play Jerry's dad on Seinfeld).

Another inconsistency: where they lived. for the most part, it was understood that their apartment was at 1049 Park Avenue. But in the episode where they win the car in a radio contest, Felix tells a parking garage attendant that they live at "74th and Central Park West."

Also, if you watch the reruns, they didn't use the "On November 13th..." opening for the entire run of the show. So maybe that was a nod to a lot of the inconsistencies.

That said, this was my favorite show of all time. Along with Batman, these two shows I grew up with MUST come on to DVD.

The last time we discussed The Odd Couple, we ended up killing an actor, the guy who played the pet undertaker, among two or three other guest spots.

Someone check in on Jack Klugman and make sure he's okay.

On November 13, 1985, Kelvin Chapman, Tom Paciorek, and Brent Gaff were asked to leave their place of employment. That request came from Frank Cashen.

On November 13, 1990, Chris Jelic and Keith Hughes were asked to leave their place of employment. That request also came from Frank Cashen.

Deep down, they knew he was right. But they also knew that one day they would return to Shea.

Oh, wait.
