Heading for Mississippi....

I'm heading to Biloxi on Sunday as part of a 15 member Disaster Relief Team from my church. We will spend 6 days rebuilding homes that were damaged by Hurricane Katrina. The homes we will be working on are inhabited by the once displaced families.

I'm looking forward to an exhausting and exhilerating week of hard labor.

You're a good man RD. Make sure to bring lots of dimes for people with bugs in their eyes.

Seriously though that's great stuff. Met fans are good people.

Just got back in from an amazing week of hard work in Mississippi. It is impossible to sum up the past week in words, but I will do the best that I can. More than a year after Hurricane Katrina swept through the gulf coast leaving a path of destruction in it's wake, I was shocked by the scope of the devastation. Nothing that I had ever seen in televised news reports or magazine photo images prepared me for the desolation I witnessed upon our team's arrival coastal Missisippi. For miles upon miles, the cities and towns resembled the remains of a war zone.

Our team of 5 men and 5 women were sent to help rebuild the home of a delightful married couple in Pass Christian, MS. Their home, which is approximately a mile inland from the shores of the Gulf of Mexico, had been deluged by 20 feet of water when the Hurricane Katrina made landfall a few miles west of their town. Our job was to rebuild as much of their home as we could in 5 days time while lending a sympathetic ear and a compassionate heart to the homeowners residing in a FEMA trailer beside the home. The home was a skeletal shell of it's studs, plumbing, and exterior siding when we arrived on site early Monday morning. We were able to successfully remove the old plumbing fixtures, fully insulate the home, tear out the rotted subflooring, and sheetrock the entire home in preparation for painting.

The house still needs interior paint, a layer of plywood subflooring, carpeting, new plumbing fixtures, and kitchen cabinets. But as the homeowners told us, they now can see light and the end of the tunnel for the first time in more than a year. They are excited and hopeful that they can now finish the remaining work and be back in their home by New Years. They requested that each team member give them our name and address so they can mail us pictures of their home once they move in.

This was truly one of the most gratifying experiences of my life. We were able to accomplish so much in such a short amount of time. However I think the experience may have touched my life as much as we impacted that of the homeowners. We all formed a very powerful bond in a short amount of time. When the time came to leave on Friday afternoon, there wasn't a dry eye on the premises.

The destruction is so complete and so widespread that projections are that it will be 10-12 years before the area is restored as best it can be. I was part of the seventh mission team sent to the area from my church. I intend to return for several more missions in the future.

I hope to post a few pictures in the near future.
