Wouldn't it be great to get a letter that started like this?

]Thanks for sending along NICK AND JAKE by Jonathan and Tad Richards. I thought it
was such a creative novel; seeing the tongue in cheek cast of characters interact was so
funny!

...And didn't end like this:

]Ultimately, though, I just didn't have a clear vision for how to go about
publishing this effectively.

Hold your head up and keep writing.

Ten thousand other publishers out there. One of them will pull the trigger, probably more than one, just based on the fact that you are a stockier, longhaired George Plimpton, with patrician baritone.

Tell me you're attaching that press clip to your submissions.

Definitely, because then they don't have to pay someone else to record the Recorded Books version.

They're nuts - it's a great read!

Don't worry - you'll find another publisher who will appreciate true quality.

Keep your head up, mole. Another publisher will see the first publisher's lack of vision and you'll be better off in the long run.

Best of luck in the search.

By the way, which for-shit publisher was that?

Hyperion.

I think what they're pushing tells a lot about them.
Hang in there, Mole.
And not by your thumbs.
Start looking for a publisher with a measurable IQ.

You're better off away from Hyperion. The president there, Bob Miller, is a great guy. But the publisher, Ellen Archer, well, there's nothing nice to be said about her.

Do you have an agent? I'm sure they have ideas of other editors/publishers who are a good fit. That also helps you with publishers who hide behind their "we don't publish unsolicited manuscripts" gibberish.

Good luck. Don't be discouraged.

Also, it's tough to compete with the Fruitcake Lady. With other publishers you won't have that problem.

Just be sure to watch out for that "Stop the Insanity!" woman. She's even scarier than the Fruitcake Lady.

I agree with Hahn that there are far better places to publish than Hyperion (and with his assessment of Miller and Archer) -- unless, of course, you're Mitch Albom. Keep up the good fight.
