He put it better than I could've but like Lipsyte, I got into Nascar initially with an idea I was slumming for a writing project. That was 6 years before him! He really nailed the stuff about Earnhardt and how fans turned on Gordon for his appearing to be the guy Eranhardt wasn't, although they were both exceptionally skilled drivers. And I think he makes a strong point about the mood of the country as seen through the perspective of the Nascar fan.
