2006 CPF Charity Gift Exchange

A Boy Named Seo
Nov 24 2006 10:41 PM

Any interest in doing this again?

For some years now, we've done a charity gift exchange, where participants put their name in a virtual hat along with the name of a charity of their choosing. After a random drawing (done by me using names in a real hat), we each give a gift of a pre-determined amount to the charity we drew. In previous years, we've done $18, $20, and $19.86.

It's quick and easy, a nice thing for the organizations that receive our humble donations, and a good thing for the soul.

If you're in like Doug Flynn, just reply here with a hearty "yeah" and the name (and a link, if possible) to your charity. All are welcome to join in.

Happy Holidays.

JG

I'm in. This is a great tradition that you started Seo.

Following my recent experiences in the Gulf coast of Mississippi, I wanted to select a charity that was working to rebuild the homes and lives of those effected by Hurricane Katrina. My charity is Samaritan's Purse. I have witnessed the work first hand.

I'll have to check to see if my alter ego, Hot Corner wants in again.

A Boy Named Seo

I'll second twenty bucks.

Mine is School on Wheels. It was started by a former teacher who took to the streets to tutor homeless kids in Santa Monica, and has now ballooned into hundreds of volunteer tutors helping homeless kids throughout Southern California.

I started tutoring this year with them. I was placed at a battered women's shelter in Long Beach and help these awesome kids who have missed massive gaps of education due to these shitty, awful circumstances. They make sure kids have supplies when they go to school, and line them up with positive role models (who don't say "shitty" in front of them) to help them to try to keep on pace with the other kids.

As I said, the kids are just great, the shelter staff is amazing, and the organization does such important work. I've never felt that kind of pride in any paid job I've had. Your twenty clams will be well spent.

Little Dickshot Junior shares a nanny/daycare situation with another family in our 'hood. Their boy, about 9 months old, has a rare genetic disorder they are 99% sure is Glanzmann's, which is a condition affecting proper functions of the platelets causing easy bruising and nosebleeds that can last for days, as well as danger from internal bleeding and other stuff.

It's treatable but not really curable -- frequently, it adds complications and danger to simple stuff like cuts, falls, dentist visits, etc., and you definitely don't want to be a teenage girl with this problem. Patients can sometimes need platlet transfusions or other treatments. Among all those important things the families of these patients have to worry about, often parents whose kids have this disorder are suspected of abuse. It's really heartbreaking, cuz he's just a normal happy baby guy otherwise.

So, I'm sure the folks at the Glanzmann's Research Foundation would be appreciative of a gift to help doctors understand it and treat it.

Awesomeness. I didn't promote Partners in Health as well as I should have, but they're an amazing organization. They treat people in Haiti, Peru and elsewhere in the Third World for tuberculosis, AIDS and other diseases, places where many public health experts said drug treatments just could not be done. I reccomend to everyone to read or give as a gift Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder which tells the story of PiH founder Paul Farmer.

Another year of selfless giving by the CPF. Great job and a hardy thanks to all that participated.

Annie, my sister recently sold her house in Williamsburg, VA. She had to be out for the closing by 5 PM last Thursday. She then closed on her new home in Williamsburg this Monday afternoon. She said the search took a while and was often frustrating, but it eventually worked out as she had always hoped it would. She got a good price for her home and ended up with the house she wanted. Hopefully, your search will turn out as well as my sister's ultimately did.
