Klassik Kountdown 06

I find it funny that the annual Top XX of all-time countdowns the radio stations do each Thanksgiving or new year's change from year to year, especially when you're dealing with the same 955, or 1,043 songs you had 25 years ago, more or less.

Over the weekend I was driving in Pennsylvania but went out of range just as 99.9 The Hawk's top 999 of all-time had broken into the worst Top 5 I'd ever heard (No. 5= Bon Jovi, Livin on a Prayer). It was so painfully amusing I checked their website for an update but they haven't listed it.

Last year, I ran down the Top 1043 from NYC's classic station. This year, here are the top 20 and how they moved from a year ago. Good year for Zeppelin! Bad for the Who!

Dropping from the Top 20 completely: Gimmee Shelter (13 to 21); Dream On (19 to 26). New arrivals: Piano Man, Light My Fire.

20: Billy Joel- Piano Man (+3)
19: Doors- Light My Fire (+3)
18: Beatles- Sgt. Peppers/A Day In The Life (-4)
17: Rolling Stones- Satisfaction (-1)
16: Bruce Springsteen- Thunder Road (-1)
15: John Lennon- Imagine (+4)
14: Queen- Bohemian Rhapsody (-6)
13: Pink Floyd- Wish You Were Here (-3)
12: Eagles- Hotel California (-6)
11: Led Zeppelin- Kashmir (+9)
10: Beatles- Let It Be (+7)
9: Rolling Stones- Sympathy For The Devil (no change)
8: Pink Floyd- Comfortably Numb (+4)
7: Bruce Springsteen- Born To Run (no change)
6: Who- Won't Get Fooled Again (-1)
5: Who- Baba O'Riley (-3)
4: Beatles- Hey Jude (+7)
3: Lynyrd Skynyrd- Freebird (+1)
2: Derek & The Dominos- Layla (+1)
1: Led Zeppelin- Stairway To Heaven (no change)

Gimme Shelter is a much worse song this year than it was last year.

I think these things are based on fan-voting so more Billy Joel fans turned out than Aerosmith fans (in other words, Scarlet Knight voted but Seawolf didn't).

Big year for Billy Joel what with Christie Brinkly all over the tabloids and whatnot.

He campaigned hard. He deserved it.

I ask again...when these classic rock stations do their countdowns, do they just slot Stairway into #1, and then see how the rest fall?
Is someone at quality control of Q104.3 saying, Stairway has to be #1, no matter how people vote?

We should do a CPF classic rock tunes countdown.

We sorta did once - on a year-by-year basis anyway.
We never did go through the process of combining it into one huge list.

I do think limiting the genre would help in that regard. For example, we could take, say, the top 200 off that 1043 list and rearrange them to our liking. It would be a good way to waste time.

Yeah, this is a cool idea and time waster, funny how Led Zep were hated by the critics but top these lists everywhere.

"Satisfaction" was the leader for so many years. Now not even top 20.
