They Suck Again - Orange Basketball 06-07

Dec 06 2006 12:05 PM

Dropped their second straight to a ranked opponent to fall to 7-2. I think I knew we might be in for a tough year with Gerry McNamara gone (never had much faith in the Nichols-Roberts-Watkins class).

I had been hoping freshman Paul Harris and Eric Devendorf could step up, but from Boeheim's comments, it seems like Harris has a ways to go:

"I laugh when people talk about him being our best player. He's not good enough to start for us right now. That's the facts. He doesn't know where he is on offense 99 percent of the time. He's still learning. He can be a good player."

"He's going to make mistakes. He's over-dribbling the ball. That's how he played in high school and you have to learn in college when you can and when you can't. He hasn't learned that yet. He's got a long ways to go."

"He's a work in progress. He can't shoot the ball . . . He still thinks he can make the next one. He's confident. I'll give him credit. If I was 1-for-13 (from 3 point range), I wouldn't be quite so confident that I was going to make the next one."

So I'm thinking Paul Harris isn't exactly the next Carmelo.

They probably lost a couple just to see if anybody was still paying attention to them.

Lulling the opposition into a false sense of security is what I call it.

Dec 08 2006 02:32 PM

It's true. Harris is going to be a monster, but he's still learning. That play he made against OK State, driving the length of the court to finish with a dunk was pretty sweet though. I don't think it will take him long to adapt to the college game.

This team is turning the ball over too much, and I don't really think they focus well or play as a team, other than short stretches of time. Devendorf and Wright it seems would both rather be scorers than point guards, and it affects their decision making.

They're leaning heavily the three seniors, which would normally be a good thing, but it doesn't seem so with these particular guys. Nichols has improved a lot, but Roberts and Watkins are the same old players so far this year.

And I'm sick of these double-digit deficits.

So yeah, they're 7-2 but I think this particular team needed to face some real competition early in the year to wake them up.

edit- I might be going to the game on Dec 30th against St Bonaventure, so I'll get to see 'em in person for the first time since 1992 or so!

Apparently Gerry Macnamara has turned down a $200K contract from a Greek team to play with Bakersfield of the NBDL. He'll be paid $18K.

Methead
Dec 15 2006 09:31 AM

I dunno. It wasn't as if he was playing much in Greece. I'd take the money and come to the US after the contract was expired, but that's me.

Are the NBDL teams affiliated with specific NBA teams, or not? I mean at least this way he has the chance to sign a quick 10-day NBA contract and get some USA exposure.

And hell, maybe he just hated living in Greece, crazy as that sounds to me.

soupcan
Dec 15 2006 09:37 AM

I agree with you. Who cares about the playing time? Hang out in Greece for a year, collect $200K and come on over next year.

Maybe he felt his best chance to showcase himself to the NBA was now but still, good money plus a year in Greece doesn't sould like too shabby a deal to me.

Edgy DC
Dec 15 2006 09:44 AM

I imagine a lot more guys parlay their NBDL play into an NBA contract than their performance in foreign leagues.

How many MLB managers in training wouldn't take a AAA job over a more lucrative and secure NCAA job, knowing that AAA is one step short of the big time. Even more analogous are the guys who grind it out in the International League instead of heading to a foreign baseball league and being paid more like stars.

soupcan
Dec 15 2006 09:47 AM

I suppose but its only one year (more like half a year at this point) and a lot of money.

Would it make that much of a difference to play it out over there and then do the NBDL thing next year?

Its not like he wouldn't be able to find a team here willing to take him.

Apparently, McNamara wasn't an accounting major at Syracuse.

Take the money, enjoy Greece, then come home to the US and chase your dream for peanuts.

where else can one get paid big dollars to play baseball?
Japan has a limit on the number of foreigners allowed on a team, a limit which most teams are to my knowledge at every year. Where else are the salaries higher than AAA?

Syracuse is in some trouble here... two players are hurt (Gorman, Roberts) and Mike Jones left the team. At one point last night, I believe they only had one guy (Rautins) available off the bench.

Anything happens to Nichols, they're screwed.

An inseparable South Philly duo has no plans to break up its act

Jackson (left) and Jardine plan to room together at Syracuse next year
Diana Eliazov/SI

When Neumann-Goretti (Philadelphia) guard Antonio "Scoop" Jardine dribbles on the wing, center Rick Jackson knows what to do. Without even exchanging a glance with Jardine, Jackson charges over the top, sets a screen, then rolls to the basket to receive one of Jardine's pinpoint passes for a layup. It's a chemistry two seniors can develop when they've been playing together almost daily for four years and spend almost every waking moment together. "That's our play," says Jardine. "We've got that one down cold."

They are Neumann-Goretti's odd couple, Jardine a six-foot-nine chatterbox with a flashy dribble, Jackson an imposing 6-9 shot blocker with a quieter demeanor. Friends since meeting in the seventh grade on a neighborhood playground, Jardine and Jackson -- who live two blocks apart in crime-plagued South Philadelphia -- became inseparable after both enrolled in 2003 at Neumann-Goretti, a Catholic school near their homes. "We just clicked," says Jardine, who averaged 14 points and eight assists last season. "Anywhere you saw me, you saw Rick."

Jardine initially showed the most promise, but by the end of their freshman year Jackson -- who came in at a pudgy 6-2 -- had sprouted to a lean 6-6 -- and was showing skills that would later make him one of the nation's top prospects. They also found that they played their best together. "We'd play two-on-two against seniors," says Jackson, who last year averaged 15 points and 12 rebounds. "And we'd kill them."

So they made a pact to go to college together, a commitment that grew stronger as they led the Saints to back-to-back Philadelphia Catholic League titles. They bonded off the court too, especially after Jackson's beloved aunt, Laretta Thomas, died last July. (Jardine says he was at Jackson's house "every day," helping him cope.) Though both were recruited by numerous elite Division I schools, only Syracuse pursued them aggressively as a package, and that, says Neumann-Goretti coach Carl Arrigale, "was the only way to get them."

Jardine and Jackson will room together at Syracuse -- "Rick can cook," says Jardine; "As long as Scoop doesn't hit me with pillows, we'll be fine," says Jackson -- but first they'll make a run at a school-record third league championship. Arrigale has high hopes. "I've seen guys get a scholarship and stop working," he says. "Not Scoop and Rick. That's just not in their nature."

To update you:

-Last night the Orange blew a first half 19 point lead against the barely over .500 and winless in the Big East, Cincinnati Bearcats at home. Nevertheless they did recover and won the game by 1 point, helped out in no small way by a stoo-pid Cincy foul with like less than 30 seconds left in the game.

-They have currently won 4 consecutive conference games and are in sole possession of second place with a 4-1 record (15-4 overall).

- I believe that an editor at Sports Illustrated is sleeping with the AD at 'Cuse. There is yet another two column blurb in this weeks issue about a player going to central New York next year:

Greener Pastures

After years of trial and sorrow, world traveler Donte' Greene finds himself in a Melo place
By Franz Lidz

GLOBE-TROTTER Greene, who played baseball in Japan,
averages 22.7 points and 12 rebounds.

Basketball's his game, but before moving to Maryland in 2001, Donte' Greene bounced around the world like a knock-hockey puck. Born on an Air Force base in Germany (his mother, April, worked for the National Security Agency), the Towson Catholic senior has lived in Japan, Guam, Thailand, South Korea, Hawaii and Pennsylvania. He speaks some German and Japanese, yet his English can sound as if he's been channeling Don King: "Mr. Boeheim and I enjoy conversating and whatnot." Mr. Boeheim, of course, is Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim, who will showcase the 6'10", 220-pound forward's dazzling perimeter game next season. For now Greene is averaging 22.7 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists and 2.5 blocks for the 15-3 Owls.

Greene picked up hoops fundamentals from his mother, a former semipro player in England. She was his first coach and once let him draw up the final play of one of younger brother D'Metrique's games. "I freed him up in the corner, and he hit the winning shot," Greene says. "It's the high point of my life."

The low point was when April died of an enlarged heart. Donte' was 13 years old. "I found her in bed and called 911," he recalls. "I was depressed for two years." He and D'Metrique moved from Hanover, Pa., to live with their father, Donald, in inner-city Baltimore. (Their parents divorced when Donte' was six.) That's when the fast-growing Greene began to focus more on basketball and less on baseball, his favorite sport while growing up in Japan. "The basketball transiteration was tough," he says. "I was 6'4" but Ethiopian-marathon-runner skinny, and players in Baltimore were very physical."

The only private school that recruited Greene was Towson Catholic, which another late-bloomer, Carmelo Anthony, had attended for three years. Greene became a starter midway through his freshman season. During the summers he has played on Team Melo, the Anthony-sponsored team that won the AAU under-16 national championship two years ago -- with Greene making the all-tournament team. By his junior year he was such a hot college prospect that he changed his text-messaging plan to unlimited. Now he is following Anthony's trail to Syracuse. "Melo and I are friends," reports Greene, "but during the NBA season we don't conversate much."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-Lastly, on page 73 of the same magazine at the bottom of the 'Inside College Basketball' column there is this nugget:

Demetris Nichols is the best player in the Big East. Syracuse's 6'8" senior forward was leading the league in scoring (18.9 points a game) through Sunday and was fourth in three-point shooting (47.1%) and 11th in blocks (1.39). -- Seth Davis

Methead

Well... I have to say, it was fun going to the Garden and watching SU play live and in person. The last game I actually attended was 12/30/92 at the Dome, a heartbreaking one-point loss to Boston College.

Anyway, this particular loss to St. John's was even worse, since they played like crap the entire game. Both teams did, actually, although St. John's sacked up and made the big shots at the end when they had to.

Without Devendorf, it would have been a blowout.

I guess that means the last time I attended a Syracuse win was 1990 or so!

I have never really liked this year's senior class. In a way, I felt like their failure to develop robbed GMac and Warrick of their shot to be a legitimate Final Four contender after Melo left. And even throughout most of their senior year, they've done little to impress me. But with that win over Georgetown last night, I'm willing to give them their due. What a fantastic game to watch...I swear, it felt like the 1980's. Great win. In a season I thought would be a disappointment, they are headed to the NCAA's, and they beat Georgetown and beat UConn. I'll take that.

By the way, how old did that game make you feel? John Thompson's son, Leo Rautins' son, Patrick Ewing's son...I guess it was only fitting that I watched part of the game with my own son.

Nike Unveils Fitted Uniforms For Elite Basketball Schools

Athletic company releases new line of basketball uniforms Tuesday

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Players from four elite basketball universities will be hitting the court this week with distinctly different Nike uniforms that showcase their upper bodies - and a little less leg.
Nike unveiled the new line of basketball uniforms Tuesday. They are being introduced for the University of Florida, Ohio State University, University of Arizona and Syracuse University. The shoe and apparel giant plans to start introducing personalized uniforms to all its NCAA-Nike partner schools beginning next fall.
The new look is decidedly different. The jerseys are tighter and the shorts are longer and baggier. And players have an option of "personalizing" their look with aerodynamic underlayer tops and leggings.
Nike says the look creates a "dramatic new silhouette" and responds to player requests.
"Our guys are really excited and fired up to wear them," said Richard Paige, a spokesman for the University of Arizona team. "Nike really went above and beyond, as least as it relates to our guys, to make sure their input was taken very seriously."
The form-fitting jerseys and the baggier shorts are made of a lightweight breathable material, Nike said. Beneath the shorts and jerseys, players will have of a choice of wearing long, short-sleeve or sleeveless Nike compression tops and padded compression shorts and leggings. The sleek shape of the underlayer resembles the design of Nike's competitor, Under Armour.
Nike said players had told the company they were looking for ways to personalize their look, which some college players already do with tops under their jerseys.
Nike says the padded compression shorts provide support for hamstrings, hips and calves. It is the first time the company has provided a padded base layer for basketball.
The company's last major overhaul for basketball uniforms came in the 1990s for the University of Michigan. A group of freshman players there known as the "Fab Five" headed to the NCAA Tournament final with baggy shorts, black shoes and short socks - an unusual look at the time that was quickly adopted.
The new tailored look will be debuted this week by Arizona, Ohio State and Syracuse at their respective conference tournaments. The University of Florida wore theirs, minus the underlayers which weren't ready yet, at a Feb. 27 game against Tennessee.
All four powerhouse basketball programs get a nod to their past in the design.
Names of players who went on to the Hall of Fame are on the uniforms. Some lettering and insignia are throwbacks to earlier days.
The uniform for Syracuse University, for example, has large color blocking on the shorts, reminiscent of the 1970s Syracuse Orangemen. The shirt has a "BSB" insignia over the heart, borrowed from the first Syracuse basketball logo created for the team in 1900.
Other details include an alligator scale pattern worked into the University of Florida uniforms and a LeBron James insignia on Ohio State's. James has said he would have attended Ohio State if he hadn't gone directly to the pros.
The company did not disclose the cost or value of the launch. Consumer versions of the new line will be available for fans to purchase.

So now, since both him and the Ohio State coach are our bitches, we can do whatever we want as long as everyone profits from it. Well, everyone except the kids who have to wear them of course. No reason why they should have any say in the matter and we know the University itself won't intervene as long as the checks clear.'

Time to root against Georgetown.

Wow.

Time to go and win the NIT, I guess.

I know it's small consolation, but I think Syracuse got hosed by the selection committee. I think Syracuse is one of the teams that should have been in the NCAA's. I thought for sure that their win over Georgetown would have sealed the deal for them.

You and me both, Doc.

The old saying is: Win the NIT and show the selection committee they were wrong.

Two schools I've attended on a post-graduate level made it:
George Washington University and Central Connecticut State (A/K/A Buckeye fodder).

I assume they seed the teams in the NIT, but I don't see any numbers next to those names.

There are a lot of good teams in there, too.

edit : #1 seeds went to West Virginia, Clemson, Air Force, Mississipi State. Syracuse is a #2.

I'm boycotting the NCAA tournament. March Madness is banned in my house.

You'd better be careful that the FBI doesn't get their hands on your NIT bracket, picking Fresno State to beat Air Force could be considered un-patriotic!

My Syracuse - Marist dream final is still alive after the first round.

It was good to see the fans get out and support their team last night. And good of the team to show up and avoid a letdown. Let's win this damn thing.

SU rolls into the Discrete Eight with a convincing win over San Diego State. Over 26000 people showed up, breaking the NIT attendance record.

They had the senior walk-ons on the floor in the final couple minutes for their final Dome game.

On the road tomorrow at Clemson.

I'm proud of this team. It's small consolation, but Syracuse is still playing while ND, Villanova, Marquette and Louisville are all done for the season.

Gaaaaaaaah! How the hell is Josh Wright taking that last shot. Jesus. He's the 4th best option on the floor.

I understand you want to leave time for a rebound, but you don't have to guarantee one.

Anyway.

I never thought they'd be anywhere close, down 17 with 11 minutes left. Very entertaining (yet frustrating) comeback... I was on the edge of the couch the whole time.

Next few years should be good.

SU's Elite Eight to face off!

edit - of course, I have no idea how he plans to actually do this... unless it comes down to opinion.

2003 wins.

Duh.

This year was much more fun than I expected it to be. I hope next year's recruiting class lives up to the hype.

Yeah... when I started reading the article, I had high hopes that he was planning some sort of Diamond Mind style simulation. I guess that's not happening.

As per CF - 'duh'

1. 2003
2. 1987 - Douglas, Coleman & Stevie Thompson. 20 years later I still hate Keith Smart.
3. 1996 - If Lazarus Sims doesn't go down in the Final against UK....

The rest of them you can throw up in any random order you want.

Whoever this Jason Hart guy from Syracuse is, he's been a Godsend to the Clippers.

Cool, he's still kicking around? He was a pretty good guard at SU.

Here are his stats from his college days...
