Assuming no rainouts.

What happens to a pitcher who is suspended? He gets to participate in spring training right? Can he pitch in AAA while he is suspended? Or would he be exiled to St. Lucie?

The way the contract works out, it's for $2mil the first year then $3mil the 2nd - so I guess they figure that year 1 is discounted on account of the suspension. Presumably it would have been more like a $6mil deal w/o the 50-day ban.
Spring Training? -- I believe yes. He can def be there, not sure about working in reg ST games. Regular Minor league games while under suspension? -- No. St Lucie? -- If you mean the instructional/extended ST in-camp thingie? -- Yes.

He can go to spring training and work out, but cannot appear in any games, major or minor league.

I remember a generation ago, the Mets signed Jerry Martin while he was yet to serve a drug suspension. He was allowed to go to spring training but not allowed to participate in any games, even intra-squad contests.

According to an article in the Times over the weekend, Mota gets docked for the 50-game period so the deal is actually worth less to him than $5 million. I think the Mets have to pay that amount into some league fund.

How might not being able to pitch in actual games effect Mota's readyness once the 50-game suspension is up?

I imagine when the suspension is over he rehabs with the Zephyrs for a week or two. Nothing against the good people of New Orleans, but this huge rotation of AAA teams is depressing.

He'll probably have to start a rehab after the 50 days expire. So he won't be available to the Mets in the 51st game. His return will really come some time after that.
