Mets to Play Hall of Fame Game

On May 21st in Cooperstown, the Mets will be playing the Orioles in the Annual Hall of Fame Game at Doubleday Field.

Checking this wacky thing they call the internet, the Mets' last appearance in the showcase exhibition was in 1992, throwing a rare shutout (Hall of Fame games often feature AAA pitching against major-league batting) in beating the White Sox 3-0.

It was actually pretty spectacular as Jeff Torborg managed his first game against his former team. Mets callup Bobby Joneswas perfect through six inninngs, finally allsoing a lone hit in the seventh on a bad-hop single in the seventh by Byron Matthews. Stupid small-town grounds crew should have just dragged the infield!

Meanwhile, Jason Bere was almost as dazzling, throwing five hitless innings. A solo homer by Chico Walker and and a two run double by Darryl Boston in the eighth provided the margin of victory.

Future Met Robin Ventura won the home run derby.

Anyhow, get your tickets now, because I anticipate C-Town will be crawling with O's fans, there to join with Cal Ripken in his presumed enshrinement.

That's not going to be enshrinement week though. Don't they usually do the inductions in July?

I don't know how many of us have attended a MLB exhibition game at the Hall of Fame, but it's a great experience to get relatively close to the players and coaches...I don't remember what year that I went, but...the game was played between the SF Giants and the Twins...during the game, Giants perenial 3rd baseman, Matt Williams, played shortstop for at least 1 inning and the Giants had a player play every single position for an inning (including pitcher)...Kirby Puckett was on the Twins at the time, and I believe that Hrbek was also with the Twins...between innings, some of the players talked to the people in the stands (which was, if I recall correctly, practically are next to the 3rd base coaches box)...back then it was during the induction week, so there were HOFers there as well...Parking was absolutely horrible though, that little town is not designed for that much traffic...

It's a great little field. It would be cool if every team played two or three games there every season.

I saw a college game there in the late '80s. Union College against somebody. Took a roadtrip to Cooperstown from Syracuse and was lucky enough that they were playing a game that day.

Pretty cool just sitting up in the stands watching a ballgame being played on that field.

Aww--Id love to attend that game!

I seperated my sternum playing shortstop on Doubleday Field in a collision with my brother, who was playing leftfield.
Wasnt really a collision. I just fell down chasing a pop up and he tripped and fell on top of me,lol.
