One would think the Mets would've figured out after the first two tries that he just-can't-hit.

So you were hoping they'd sign the good hitting defensive specialist for the minor league catching position?

Yeah, I'm not sure Mike Lieberthal would've bit at the minor-league contract and invite to spring training.

I mentioned in another thread, but his role last year was to shepherd MIke Pelfrey to the bigs. He received high marks (including from Pelfrey) and I'm sure they'd like to see if he can help any other top prospects out.

They apparently think he really helped Pelfrey advance (learning him how/when to throw what and improving his CAHNfidence). He's essentially a AAA player-coach

Is Castro a certain returnee?

Not a bad pickup for an organization that is short on catchers. Sure, he can't hit, but if LoDuca or Castro goes down, you need someone to play behind the plate.

As someone connected with the Mets once pointed out, you have to have a catcher or you'll have a lot of passed balls.
