Who do you fear?

The Cards appear to have lost 4/5s of their starting rotation to free agency. That wasn't their strength or anything, but it's interesting to see what they throw out there this season. Jim Edmonds waited until now to have foot sugery, but claims he'll be going on opening day. He'll be 37 in 2007, so will Taguchi, and they got a hard-to-repeat year out of a jive-ass role player in Scott Spezio.

Is Rolen still freezing out his manager? Is Chris Duncan for real? Is Preston Wilson returning? Will Pujols dig a deeper PR hole?

I don't really fear the Cards repeating.

I guess the Phillies are a phright as long as Ryan Howard has all four limbs attached. After all these years, it's going to be hard to accept them without Lieberthal behind the plate. Guess what? I don't think Rod Barajas --- removed from the friendly confines of Arlington --- is going to give them enough there. Barajas backed out of a two-year deal worth about twice when the Blue Jays asked him to take a physical. Either he

(1) Wanted, as he says, a chance to play for a contender, and not a bum;
(2) Wanted to re-enter the free agent market a healthier man and get a big deal going into 2008; or
(3) Feared he wouldn't fare well on the physical.

Rookie Carlos Ruiz will also be catching for Philadelphia, but if they stick with Barajas, that'll make three positions --- catcher (Barajas), third (Wes Helms), and right (Shane Victorino) --- that they're kind of faking it at.

As they stand right now,I don't really phear the Phils.

I'll tell you, if they keep stockpiling pitching the way they've done, I fear the Marlins. We've seen them come back a few years after a fire sale before. Rickey Nolasco might take over as closer opening up the fifth spot in the rotation to any number of talented arms. Going down to Florida, facing that staff in that park, could lead to team-wide slumps.

I feared the Marlins last year, and I will continue to fear them. A good, young. hungry team who we've historically gone something like 6-87 against.

If anything, I think I'm more fearing a return to mediocrity on the part of the Mets than any particular opponent.

What the Cardinals do doesn't matter so much, since they're in another division. If they tank, it's one less Wild Card opponent, but at this point anyway I have my eyes set on the division title. And if the Mets make the playoffs they'll have an opponent who had a good season, and whether that opponent is the Cardinals or someone else is a concern for October.

The larger danger is if the Phillies or Marlins or even the Braves have an almost-everything-goes-right kind of year. At least one of those teams will probably have some success. We'll have to see if it's enough success to derail the Mets.

I don't think the Mets will "return to mediocrity" but I think this season will be a challenge for WWSB when (or, unlikely -- if) the team fails to get off to such a hot start again.

We were fortunate last season to have so many games vs. Washington and Florida when those clubs were still figuring it out in April and May. I recall after one early-season Marlin game I remarked here that they might lose 110 games. They got a lot better but too late to affect us.

I fear everyone -- Philly, Florida even Atlanta, since they usually figure something out -- but don;t necesarily think a tigher race would be a bad thing for fun & excitement next summer.

What I fear is the O tanking...

I fear the starting rotation will come a cropper in the early going,or at least the older guys will be burned by July...Omar is putting a lot of faith in Glavine and Hernandez.......apart from that I think Philly will be better ,the Marlins will be good but with no new stadium again this year they will trade Willis to the Mets thus my fear for the starting rotation will be alleviated.

I haven't been following the story closely at all, but I thought I saw a headline saying that they were making progress on the stadium issue in Miami. Anyone know?

From the folks at 'The Hardball Times':
it looks like the Marlins, the City of Miami and Miami-Dade County are close to putting together a deal that would consist of a 60/40 split between public and private funding. The public money would come from a hotel-motel, facility and redevelopment district tax. Most importantly, the whole issue won’t require a public referendum. It will require approval from both the Miami City Council and the Miami-Dade County Board of Supervisors, but if it reached the floor of either government body, there will probably already be some kind of agreement that makes approval a formality.

The Yankees, because they're going to win it all this year in dominating fashion.

Tom Glavine, because no matter how bad he is he'll never lose his spot in the rotation. Anthony Young better watch out.

Given that as a Met he's never been bad enough to warrant losing the spot...how do you justify this allegation?

I'm still afraid of Marvin Karp, who picked on me all through grade school. He was smaller than me, and I should have popped him one around second grade, but he got the idea that I would take some abuse, and I just never got over it. Sometimes I lay awake at night and give him some grief back, after which we go at it in the schoolyard and I beat the piss out of him.

But he basically still scares me. I'm not at all sure I could take him.

Oh, baseball? I'm fearless. The Mets and I can beat up any other team plus Marvin.

Edgy DC: I don't really fear the Cards repeating.

Tenatatively right, but still a bit dicey.
As they stand right now, I don't really phear the Phils.

Tenatatively right, but still a bit dicey.
I'll tell you, if they keep stockpiling pitching the way they've done, I fear the Marlins.

WRONG! Good one.
seawolf17: I feared the Marlins last year, and I will continue to fear them. A good, young.
Sadly, I fear my influence in this one. WRONG!
Yancy Street Gang: If anything, I think I'm more fearing a return to mediocrity on the part of the Mets than any particular opponent.

A fear that was well-founded there for a while, but ultimately has proven to be exaggerated.
The larger danger is if the Phillies or Marlins or even the Braves have an almost-everything-goes-right kind of year.

WRONG! The larger danger apparently will be a post-season opponent.
Johnny Dickshot: I don't think the Mets will "return to mediocrity" but I think this season will be a challenge for WWSB when (or, unlikely -- if) the team fails to get off to such a hot start again.

Essentially correct!
I fear everyone...

No fair.
but don;t necesarily think a tigher race would be a bad thing for fun & excitement next summer.

WRONG! Nobody had any fun, freaking whiners.

Except that San Diego series. I'll give you that.
What I fear is the O tanking...

Eh, right enough. for about 10 weeks there.
metirish: I fear the starting rotation will come a cropper in the early going,or at least the older guys will be burned by July...

Terribly WRONG!
.......apart from that I think Philly will be better

Correct as of this morning (the Phils are currently six percentage points better than last year), but too close to call.
the Marlins will be good but with no new stadium again this year they will trade Willis to the Mets thus my fear for the starting rotation will be alleviated.

WRONG! WRONG! WRONG! Just WRONG!
Vic Sage:the reaper.

WRONG! All our times have come, here but now they're gone, with Vic thankfully not meeting the reaper. And the Mets sill live on at Shea. Another 40,000 coming everyday.
Rockin' Doc:Don't fear the reaper.

CORRECT!
Willets Point The Yankees, because they're going to win it all this year in dominating fashion.

WRONG! Even if the Yankees do win it all, only A-Rod has dominated.
Tom Glavine, because no matter how bad he is he'll never lose his spot in the rotation. Anthony Young better watch out.
WRONG! While Glavine has indeed not lost his spot, it hasn't been an issue and Anthouny Young needn't watch out.
iramets:I'm still afraid of Marvin Karp, who picked on me all through grade school.

Unconfirmed, but there have been no reports of Marvin Karp harrassing ira this season.
Oh, baseball? I'm fearless. The Mets and I can beat up any other team plus Marvin.

Apparently true.
ABG: Aliens.

2007: An alien-free season.

Things may yet develop, but I think Dickshot wins this one.
