My family must have thought that I needed to relax more. I received several CD's, a few books, and a new pair of slippers.

Three different sets of headphones for my iPod. My stepdaughter and grandson couldn't decide which one would be best for me, so they got them all.

Lotsa neat books.

A Wrangler western shirt with "Arick's Grandpa" embroidered onto the pocket.

And Arick, meanwhile, slept last night in the cowboy boots and sixguns and holsters I got him.

Well, today I got a movie and Chinese food. But for Chanukah I got a new camera and a lovely garnet bracelet (plus the previously purchased card catalog CD holder <g>). It was a good haul.

D-Dad got an electric toothbrush (that he requested and picked out) as well as a new hybrid golf club (that he also picked out).

The kids, as always, made out like bandits ;)

Plus I got some stuff too, including a new Creative Zen Vision mp3 player to replace my old clunky Zen.

Books, chocolate, and DVDs.

But the best was the leg lamp:

Very cool - did you put it in the front window?

We bought a big new teevee, a coffee table and a futon so our gifts were small. Got a couple of CDs and some pants.

Yes. But it got broken.

I bet you're out of glue :(

I don't get the leg lamp thing ... it was in another thread yesterday morning
and then changed out for something else.

It's out of A Christmas Story.

If you haven't seen it, rent a copy pronto - it's classic!

I think TBS is showing it for two weeks straight or something.

ScarletKnight41
Dec 26 2006 09:06 PM

Not quite. But they do show it 24 hours straight from Christmas Eve though Christmas Day.

I got 2 ghost story books, 2 puzzles (one is A Charlie Brown Christmas!), art kits, some clothes, a pretty necklace from my husband, tea and coffee, some DVDs, and other nice stuff.

How can five days go so fast?

I had that exact thought at dinner this evening.

Yes. One of the greatest Christmas movies ever. (I also got the 20th Anniversary DVD.)

The lamp is a great conversation piece, and when anyone asks where you got it, just say, "It was a major prize."

i was kinda sorta hoping for a wii, but instead i got a nice set of sharp santoku knives, some pretty clothes, books, and the new superman dvd. also a grill pan that i've sorely wanted for a long long time and some pool cues. i made out well.

I think A Christmas Story is a movie you have to see as a kid to fall in love with it. I first saw it when I was in my 30's and it didn't do anything for me.

ScarletKnight41
Dec 27 2006 07:11 AM

I disagree. My husband and I first saw it as adults, and we love it.

My husband and his sister adore A Christmas Story and will happily watch it over and over and over again.

For Hanukkah/Christmas/my birthday I got Sirius satellie radio, a few gift certificates so my husband and I could buy stuff for our new condo, a couple of cookbooks (everyone's always trying to not so subtly encourage me to cook more!), and a hemitite necklace.

Nope. It came out when I was over 30. As a matter of fact, the older you are, the more likely you are to appreciate it.

However, I can understand not being impressed the first time you see it. It's one movie that's funnier the more you watch. One viewing often isn't enough to appreciate it.

I didn't care much for it the first time -- I disliked Jean Shepherd. But the second time made me realize it was funnier than I remembered, and the more I see it, the more I see things I hadn't noticed.

I guess I'm in the minority then. I find it pretty unwatchable.

Edgy DC

I like Jean Shepherd but find the movie... spotty.

I frequently don't get frequently replaying a movie, particularly a comedy.

Good

  • Darin McGavin (and the mother also)

  • The work they did to use all the authentic trademarks and logos.

  • The screenwriters stretching out the story by stealing pieces of Shepherd's other stories.

  • Good evocation of the universal archetypes of childhood, mixed with Jean Shepherd's odd characterizations of the mid-century midwesterners with names like "Flick."
Bad

  • I like Mom. I like her, but part of what I like is that cute but totally anachronistic 80s perm she's wearing.

  • No sense, save for the occasional car on the blocks in some yard, that there was a tremendous economic depression like 15 minutes before the film started.

  • That cartoony silent-film fantasy sequence early on is cloying and annoying. Most of the fantasy sequences are.
I guess what makes it beloved they mix the comedy and tragedy of childhood in a fair rate. But I think people go way too over the top about this movie that was ignored on its release. Some guy has been going nuts buying up the props and he finally bought the house where it was filmed (not, however, Jean Shepherd's house), and he intends to make into a museum.

I think it's that un-funny fantasy scene that turns people off the first time.

I got a new work briefcase thingy; some undies; some good coffee; BBQ sauces; PJs (these are important suddenly with a kid around).

I got Wifey replacements for the two ugliest pieces of furniture in our home (our bedside tables) and Junior got a ton of cool toys and lots of wrapping paper to eat.

I got reallly scared there for a second when I read, "I got Wifey replacements for the two ugliest ..."

Yancy - "I guess I'm in the minority then. I find it pretty unwatchable."

You're not alone. My wife watched it once and believes that was more than enough times for her. I have watched it once and parts of it a few other times. It's okay, but I fail to see the almost cult like allegiance some seem to have for it. One of my staff told me she watched it 4 or 5 times this season. She said she hates that she won't be able to see it again until next Christmas season.

what's wrong with a manly man wearing clothes that are pretty in a manly way, huh?

actually, this year, i didn't get any girly-colored things (which i can so totally pull off, btw!)... two green-striped shirts from different gift-givers, some running clothes, a light blue box-checked dress shirt and a penguin tie... i think the least manly color was the light blue on that shirt.

the penguin tie is this, in a bold blue:

very cool.

Lots of men look very nice in pretty clothes, like yourself.
Just look at Johhny Depp.
