Jarts were great! My cousin Junie was Jart champion of the family, but I wasn't too bad either, for a kid. I'll bet my mom and dad still have a set.

Also of course we all had Creepy Crawler sets.

I think my daughter had that little "Barbie Doll meets bottle rocket" character.

These write ups are really pretty funny, considering.

And we'll all be gay when Johnny comes marching home

I'm in favor of dangerous toys.
The herd needs a bit of thinning out every so often.

I have been trying unsuccessfully to find a clip of Dan Ackroyd on SNL hawking Mainway Toys. Bag-o-Glass was probably my favorite part of that skit.

Yeah, and while we're at it, wassup with those childproof locks on cigarette lighters?
If kids want to smoke, let them.

My grandparents had both Jarts and Creepy Crawlers.

Nobody was maimed.

I had a 'Creepy Crawlers' set. Cooked up all kinds of shit on it.

Let 'em at the liquor cabinet too.
Kids won't nap? ... there's your solution.

Yeah, unfortunately for the subsequent generation, the feds have to work with broad stats and ignore the anecdotal information.

I remember those darts coming out when I was a pre-teen or so and me thinking even then, "How long is Consumer Protection going to allow those?"

Actually, I think the feds are very good at acting specifically on anecdotal information. All it takes sometimes is one crying mother claiming her kid was injured by a product and they'll snap right into action.

I don't think so.

The one mewling mother usually gets quicker action from the courts.

And I'm guessing often it's the market corrections of our capitalist system that knocks a product off the market faster than the nanny-state action of the Consumer Protection Agency. Once the lawsuits (or threats of them) cut deep enough into profits, the product gets a voluntary recall, or discontinuance.

It's the FDA that has to work alone, without the civil courts being as damning to dangerous food as dangerous toys. People are a lot less aggressive about suing over trans-fat, and are more happy to kill themselves with the stuff than they are to watch kids brain themselves with Kerbangers, and defend their right to do so, even though (according to this week's Straight Dope) the deadly shit adds nothing to the taste of our food.

OE: I think I'm disguising opinion as fact here.
