Rock & Roll Hall of Fame new inductees in order of how much I like them:

Patti Smith
REM
Grandmaster Flash & the Furious 5
The Ronettes
Van Halen

Not a bad class over all.

Whoda guessed that my debate with Paul Alberti back in 1983 over who was better -- Van Halen or REM -- would be inconclusive by 2007.

A fine class, but a whole lot of early peakers there.

Though sharpie isn't the first one to tell me that Patti Smith is still a great ticket.

Howard Stern was talking about Van Halen's induction this morning wondering which of the band mmembers would show since they all sort of hate each other.

The conversation progressed to who should show between David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar. Meaning which one was more instrumental in the band being a HOF band.

'Was Van Halen a hall of fame band when Roth left them?' - Yes.

'If Van Halen originated when Hagar joined them would they have been a Hall of Fame Band?' - No.

I concur.

According to this morning's Times, both of them will be inducted.

It's not just about who shows. The Hall of Fame, since inducting the Beach Boys, has a history of being very specific about which members of a band's roster are in and which aren't. Black Sabbath, a pretty good precedent for Van Halen as inductees, went in with Butler, Iommi, Ward, and Ozzie, but without Ronnie James Dio.

I think it's fair to say that Hagar had a more substantial run with Van Halen than Ronnie James did with Sabbath.

For what it's worth, both singers will be inducted. Some thoughts from Sammy, courtesy of melodicrock.com:

]Van Halen's music "is holding up really well," said Hagar, 59. "I'm not taking all the credit. I mean, the earlier stuff with Roth set the tone for the whole thing. Thank God when I joined the band, it didn't go down. We kept going. It was awesome."

If Van Halen is enshrined, it remains to be seen if the honor will extend to ex-Extreme vocalist Gary Cherone. He sang only on the 1998 album Van Halen III. Hagar had no idea if Cherone would share in any Rock Hall glory. "It would be a little strange," Hagar said. "But at the same time, he did his part."

Earlier this year, it was announced that Eddie Van Halen's 15-year-old son Wolfgang had replaced Anthony on bass. "I really have no idea - ppphhhttt! - what's going on," Hagar said. "Michael and I are friends, which is why he isn't in the band anymore."

Van Halen and Hagar went their separate ways in 1996. Eight years later, Hagar was back in the fold for a reunion tour. In the interim, he co-headlined a tour with Roth. There has been buzz lately about Van Halen hitting the road again with Roth. Hagar, for one, doesn't buy it. "I'm not saying I don't want a Dave reunion," Hagar said. "I think their best bet after this would be to go out with Dave. But I don't see it working. "Ed, Wolfie, Alex and some new kid would be what I put my money on. That could happen. But Dave and Ed working together? I don't see it in a million years. I know 'em both."

In fact, Hagar doubts Van Halen's members can put aside their differences even long enough to get through the Rock Hall ceremony. "I think it could be ugly," he said. "This might be the best one ever! It's what everybody wants. They want to see blows thrown and yelling and screaming and people making fools of themselves and trying to outshine each other. This could be a real comedy, man. This could be a reality series right here. I don't think it's gonna be a real friendly, beautiful scene. . . .I could go there and jam with them. Ed, Mike, Al and I probably could pull it off, 'cause we just did it [in 2004]. We were professional when we went onstage. But you throw Dave in that mix, and I just don't see it working. Dave's gonna want it to be all about him. Ed's gonna want it to be all about him. And that's a tough one right there. I'll probably just be sitting over in the corner, cracking up."

Poor Gary Cerone.

Nuno in the meantime messed up a 'Bands Reunited' episode but somehow was an invited guest during last week's Top Chef dinner party.

Grandmaster Flash.

R&B Hall of Fame, yes. Rap Hall of Fame, yes. Urban Contemporary Music Hall of Fame, yes. Scratching Hall of Fame, yes.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, no.

Did a good job of sampling rock songs. But this selection is just wrong.

While it's questionable, I'm not surprised they did it. Rock journalists run this thing. They can spend their days and nights writing about a dying form, or keep themselves vital (and cool) by expanding the definition of the form.

What rock band had a legacy parallel to Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five? Would they be admitted?

The R&RHOF thinks of itself as the "what kids have listened to since the 1950's" Hall of Fame. Plenty of R&B acts are in there as well as certain country acts. Why does Grandmaster Flash belong there less than Johnny Cash or Little Willie John?

Here is a list of all the inductees:
