I was away

Hi everyone,I've not been around this past month because I was in a detox and then a rehab center for alcohol dependence and depression.

I've been an alcoholic I suppose for years ,the last six years I've drank every night at home alone, but the past year it got way out of control,I was drinking a 12 pack a night every night and more on the weekends,it really caught up with me in the last five months,I wasn't eating and lost a lot of weight and was in a deep depression....I felt like I was having a nervous breakdown,it was hell really.

On December 11th I walked into my boss's office and told him I needed help, that night I was admitted to a detox center at my place of work, spent seven days there and then went to a rehab center for 21 days...I went to a dual rehab....a MICA program..Mental Illness/Chemical Addiction...my Doctor there was wonderful and I really learned alot about alcoholism and depression and I finished the program today....now the hard work starts....I'll have outpatient treatment for six months(or more) and I go to my first AA meeting tonight....

Taking that first step was hard but as soon as I did I felt a huge weight lifted of me....still detox was horrible and the rehab was hard, spending xmas and New Years in there was tough as my family in Ireland knew nothing of what I was going through, but I am happy that I did it.

Anyway if anyone here is going through a problem there is help out there.....

thanks.

Courageous!

Take it a day at a time as they say, glad to see you check back in, was wondering what happened.

Irish, all the best from me. It's a huge step to get help.

I'm the adult child of an alcoholic; my mom is in rehab right now, and it's something I've been dealing with my whole life. My best regards to you and your continued sobriety and good health. Be proud.

Irish, I'm glad you took that first step, that's the hardest part for many people. I've struggled with depression all my life so I know half of what you're going through. I'm glad you're getting help and I'm happy to see you again.

We should set up a private forum for virtual meetings.

Best wishes for both irish and wolf.

I'm sure wolf would agree with me that you gave any future kids you may have the best Christmas present they'll ever get.

I don't know what to say other than good for you and good luck.

My family attempted an intervention for my little brother a few months back and it didn't go well.

It's heartening to hear that there are people out there who want the help and take it.

Battling alcoholism is a lifelong struggle, but you have already taken the most important and most difficult step. Best of luck to you in the future.

No Cooby,I didn't want my family in Ireland to know,I just didn't want them to worry,I got to phone them on christmas day and a few other times while in rehab...maybe one day i will tell them...my sister that lives here knows...

They'd be proud of you too, but I understand

Unfortunately, you can't just assume that everyone will be proud of you. My mom has had a LOT of non-support from her siblings, which has been both a terrible burden (on her, on my grandma) and a terrible relief (on us, because we really didn't like those aunts and uncles anyway). Alcoholism is not a fun disease.

Don't know why Cooby's so hot for December 9, but I'd be okay with that too, as that Ms. Wolf's birthday.

metirish
Jul 14 2007 10:50 AM

Cooby's sons birthday is the ninth..we have chosen a name,my wife really wanted a Gaelic name as she is from Puerto Rico and likes Irish names,I really didn't want one that was common...so today I came accross the name Lorcan...we both like it alot...it's meaning is...

Lorcan "lor + can" Means "silent" or "fierce" and was probably used as a nickname for a "brave warrior." Sometimes equated with Laurence, Lorcan is a name in its own right. One Lorcan was the grandfather of Brian Boru, two kings of Leinster bore the name and St. Lorcan O'Tuathail, better known as St. Laurence O'Toole, was an influential bishop of Dublin and an important mediator between the Norman invaders and the Irish in the twelth century. The name is growing in popularity again in Ireland.

We know it's the name because yesterday we talked about naming him Lorca after the Spanish poet, but my wife felt that it would be mistaken for a female name...so Lorcan just feels so right...

New York's Celterican subculture grows by one.

"Dude, congratulate me."

"Um, sure, why?"

"My wife's pregnant."

"Wow, congratulations. How long have you known?"

"Well, I just got her pregnant last night."

"Wait a minute. How do you know you got her pregnant last night?"

"We had sex..."

"Yeah. And somehow you felt something and knew?"

"Well, I felt pretty good about it. Then the apple rose out of my hat and started flashing."

Aidan is a great name!

BTW my cousin just had a baby girl during the winter, and this woman seems to have a fettish for Irish names (her last name is Coffey and she married a Doughtery) her new daughter's name, Shea! (Sadly while she isn't much of a sports fan, her husband and brother are huge Yankqui fans, but her father is a Red Sox fan!)

I don't know what kind of weirdo freak would go around with an Irish name here in the good ol' US of A!!!

Jul 14 2007 11:49 AM

Congatulations!

Perhaps you can honor boththe Celtic and Latin heritage:

I'm thinking Bernardo O'Higgins

Edgy DC
Jul 14 2007 11:59 AM

O'Higgins sure, but surely we can do better than a Chilean. There's a reasonably significant history of Irish emigration to Puerto Rico. The highest-profile Irish-Puerto Rican I can think of, though, is Bernie Williams.

Jul 14 2007 01:33 PM

Aiden Rivera; that's almost as mixed up as ... Keith Hernandez!

When my wife was pregnant with MiniWolf, our five-year-old nephew made a list of approved names for the baby: Pedro, Carlos, Jose, and Mike. We loved the list; it's still hanging in his room.

I love the name, Irish. Nice choice.

This year - CPF poster

Last year - turned 42
This year - turned 43

In other words, Irish, you've got one seriously impressive list. Congratulations!
