I mentioned this blog in the baseball card thread, but in case it was missed, it deserves to be read.

This is like a blackened, more intense version of Faith & Fear. (which is also worth reading twice every day). I think it works because just looking at the card, whichever he chooses that day, does powerful things to your memory, if you're around my age. Then he just opens up a vein and bleeds all over it.

Just came across this recently (not literally) but since have gone back and read every entry. He's in the middle of a pretty good serial now. Enjoy!

Pretty cool to see the flaming Astros home whites out of doors for a change.

I remember that whole J.R. Richard thing.

It was sad really. I remember the grumblings about his being lazy, about nothing being wrong with him. I was in L.A at the time and as N.L. West rivals the Astros were paid a bit of attention in the Los Angeles papers.

I remember whiffs of racism surrounding those 'lazy' remarks as well. When J.R. finally did collapse, no reference whatsoever to misdiagnoses or the laziness could be found anywhere.

A sad story really. I think years later he was found to be living under a highway overpass.

Dontrelle Willis reminds me of J.R.

In the hilarious Gorman Thomas piece, he says the Brewers were robbed in the '82 series by Don Denkinger. Wasn't that the Cards in 1985?

I thought of Richard every time somebody accused Armando of having no heart. I think of him every time I hear accusations of a black guy (particularly a big black guy) coasting on his talent and praise for the white guy for being a gritty throwback.

Now that is sad if true.....

1st inning of the 1980 All-Star game that's mentioned in the article.

Cool clip, seeing as Willie leads off.

Yeah, Dekinger was the goat in the Royals-Cards series in 85, he has that screwed up.

The 1982 WS I remember was 7 games, I think. IIRC, John Stupor pitched well for the Cardinals. For a time, I confused John Stupor with John Tudor.

The Tudor-Stupor confusion wore by September of '85. Damn it.

Blackened and intense, indeed. I'll never think of Lenny Randle sliding quite the same way again.

Great find, JD.
