ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — The principal owner of the New York Mets has given $12 million to the University of Michigan to fund scholarships, create sports programs and rebuild stadiums on campus.

Fred Wilpon is the Major League Baseball team's chairman and chief executive officer. He also owns the Brooklyn Cyclones, a minor league team, and is a senior partner of SportsNet New York, a regional sports network.

Wilpon played baseball at Michigan until an arm injury cut short his career, the university said in a statement released Thursday. A scholarship grant enabled him to remain at the school and he and his wife Judy graduated in 1958.

"Through my own life experiences, I know how much happiness that sports activities, both as a player and a fan, can bring a person," Wilpon said.

The gift from the Judy and Fred Wilpon Family Foundation provides $5 million to create a sports injury prevention center, which will focus on promoting athletes' health and preventing sports-related injuries.

The baseball and softball stadiums will receive $4 million, while $3 million will go toward scholarships for undergraduate students who meet financial aid requirements. A dollar-for-dollar match from the President's Donor Challenge will double the scholarship gift to $6 million.

"We are grateful for this support and the many ways the Wilpons' gift will affect so many facets of the university," Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman said.

Here's the complete list of Michigan alumni who play(ed) in MLB. I don't see any current Mets on the list.

I think the credit should go to the folks who created Baseball-Reference.com, but thanks.

Not stated in that article is that baseball-softball complex will be named after Wilpon's parents.

I had a friend who had a Wilpon baseball-softball complex. It wasn't pretty.

A cynic might wonder it that money would be better spent compensating the nearly 200 businesses that operate at Willets Point and will soon face eminent domain forcing them out,and probably in most cases out of business.

I imagine they'll be compensated at some rate. They just won't necessarily have a say in the matter.

I hope the eminent domain fight returns to the high court sometime soon.

He has $12 million to give to UM but can't fork over any cash for a healthy, legit #3 starter? Sheesh. Those damn college fundraisers are at it again.

Well he probably has another $12 million lying around somewhere. In fact if he could give $12 million to the businesses at Willets Point and $12 million to Willets Point myself, I wouldn't complain.
