Odd Injuries - 2007

The whacko injury list for this season has its first entry and, perhaps not surprisingly, it's Kerry Wood. The Chicago Cubs pitcher is not expected to throw off the mound for a few days after he slipped this week getting out of a hot tub at home. Wood landed on his stomach and chest.

I wonder if his pitcher's instinct to protect his arm kept him from using his arms to break his fall? How often do you fall and land on your stomach and chest? I once slipped on the stairs when carrying my infant son. My paternal instincts overwhelmed my instincts for self-preservation, and instead of using my arms to protect myself I clutched the baby tight, and landed very hard as a result. Maybe it was the same thing with Kerry Wood and his arm as it was with me and my son.

Lets compare, which "Generation K" group ended up the worse for wear? Our Gen K? While none of the three ever produced seasons like both Wood's and Prior's respective first season, I'm going to say the Cubbies pair have come out worse for wear based on Wilson sticking around for a while and Izzy earning a rep as one of the better closers in the business

Wood was already getting hurt before Prior was even drafted by the Cubs. They're not comparable.

] SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- Baltimore Orioles pitcher Jose Acevedo broke four ribs and his collarbone Friday in a motorcycle accident and is expected to miss the entire season, his Dominican winter league team said. Acevedo was conscious and in intensive care Friday, Aguilas Cibaenas executive Luichy Sanchez told The Associated Press. "Is this a surprise? Absolutely," Orioles executive vice president Mike Flanagan said in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. "We're obviously saddened to hear the news. This sounds like a serious accident." A non-roster invite to Orioles spring training, Acevedo crashed his motorcycle into a car early Friday in Santiago. Aguilas Cibaenas officials did not know if the car was moving at the time of the accident. Acevedo, who did not pitch for a major league team in 2006, is 18-25 with a 5.74 ERA in five seasons with Cincinnati and Colorado. He threw eight innings and was named an All-Star in the recent Caribbean Series in Puerto Rico, which the Aguilas won for the Dominican Republic. Acevedo was supposed to report to Orioles camp Wednesday, but he never arrived.

The simply terrible Nationals may provide a distraction for the first four or six weeks of the season, but people will realize soon enough that the Orioles are one awful team. Baltimore and DC may have the worst team in each league.

Leo Mazzone is going to make the O's staff into a mini-Braves. This and the Benson injury do not hurt this trajectory. The O's had a pretty darn good ERA the second half as a staff and I would not be surprised if they are breathing down the Big Two's necks come the All Star Break. Wheither they can hang through August and September though...

I'm with Edge. It doesn't belong in this thread, but the D-Rays are better, and so are the Blue Jays. The O's are a 60-win team in the AL East.

Ken Griffey admits the real reason behind his broken left hand: says "... he was wrestling with his daughter and two younger sons on his yacht in the Bahamas this past December when the oldest jumped in and knocked him off balance. He landed awkwardly on his left hand."
