I have a simple-living, self-described nerdy, second-hand-clothes-wearing friend.turning 27 this weekend. He has no TV and doesn't hit the movies much. Doesn't even read much. About his only self-indulgence is running, at which he's awesome --- a sub-3:00 marathoner.

I wanted to get a reflective vest for night-running, but Ms. Edgy says they run higher than I think. I'd get him a restaurant gift certificate, but I suspect his girlfriend has recently backed off.

Did I mention his sef-esteem is an issue?

Well, what the fuck? How cheap is Ms. Edgy? I can get him one for each night of the week and still have enough for the parking ticket.

I would think that someone who could run a marathon would have
high self-esteem. Interesting.

You'd think.

Terrific friend. He'd run into a fire if he thought he could save my baseball glove. But if he makes one more self-depracating crack I'm going to kick him.

Too often, self-sacrifice for your friends is not just an expression of love of others but also self-loathing. I wouldn't be surprised if the self-depracation was (or is to be) the breaking point with the girlfriend.

The Millrose games are on today, would have been a good gift to send him to MSG for that...I imagine it would cost more than the vest though.
