Daytona 500 (Nascar 07)

This sunday afternoon.

Qualifying over the weekend resulted in an all-candy front row: Rookie Mike Gilliand in the M&M's car takes the pole with Ricky Rudd (great Nascar name) on the outside in the Snickers car.

So that Gilliand guy came out of nowhere, never raced at Daytona before this past weekend. The other guy to watch this year is Juan Pablo Montoya, who's a handsome Columbian from Formula 1 racing who rides Nascar this year in the 42 car. He was 4th fastest in qualifying and with a good year could really turn the old southern fried sport on its tail.

How often do people switch from the Formula One ciruit to the NASCAR circuit? Do they tend to improve on their F1 performance or fall back?

Do NASCAR officianados hate them for it? Think of them as slummers?

Are those two guys with the pole position flashing gang signs?

I believe Montoya is the highest profile switchee ever. Some Nascar regulars like Robby Gordon and Tony Stewart have also driven Indy cars but were never stars on the circuit of Montoya's stature.

I think in racing circles, F1 is considered a better, more pure form of racing, but Montoya's move may signal that Nascar's where the $$ is, and if he's successful & reports it satisfying, more international drivers would enter the game.

That could be considered anorther nail in the coffin of Nascar's Southern roots, or evidence of its great appeal, depending on the perspective of the observer.

IIRC Montoya left F1 because he was sick of the BS that went on there, and especially the team he was with, apparantly he likes NASCAR and would love nothing more than to become a big star,I have to say though that NASCAR is nothing in Europe...much like F1 here.

Yeah, seems like Montoya had a little less success at F1 than the Nascarians want you to believe.

He is a former Indy 500 champ.

I guess one victory at the Cathedral of Speed speaks for itself though, no matter the rest of your legacy.

Does Daytona always fall the weekend after the Pro Bowl?

Years ago, I was stuck in a conference hotel room with only HBO for company and stumbled upon the Sylvester Stallone/Renny Harlin Formula One movie Driven.

It was clearly underwritten by the F1 circuit in an attempt to draw some of the fans that were flocking to NASCAR, but I couldn't look away, for all it's dumbness. It had the lame Euro-stereotypes that you'd expect to find in a Stallone movie. The American (Stallone) was gritty, while the Italian was goofy and the German cold and clinical. At the same time, a European director promoting a circuit that's more popular in Europe couldn't make these guys inhumanly stereotypical, so they each get the redemtive moment the Dragos of the film-world never get.

ESPN has a piece of the NASCAR season this year (mostly Busch series and qualifying events I guess) and - * SURPRISE, SURPRISE * - they're now covering the hell out of the sport in their updates and SportsCenters complete with their own roster of "expert" and ex-driver talking heads.
So, if nothing else, the sport will get a ton of extra "reflected" publicity out of it all because no one self-promotes like those folks at ESPN/ABC/Disney

NASCAR hands down suspension to Waltrip crew chief
Posted: Thursday February 15, 2007 9:13AM; Updated: Thursday February 15, 2007 9:39AM

Michael Waltrip's crew chief, David Hyder, was also fined $100,000 by NASCAR.

Doug Pensinger/Getty Images
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- The Daytona 500 is a wreck before it even gets started.

A cheating scandal that had already brought down four teams now has ensnared another -- that of two-time winner Michael Waltrip -- tarnishing NASCAR's signature race and Toyota's highly anticipated debut.

"We've got people's attention now," NASCAR competition director Robin Pemberton said Wednesday.

Waltrip lost his crew chief and team director right before Sunday's Super Bowl of racing. The two were suspended indefinitely after an illegal substance was found during inspection for the season-opener.

Waltrip, docked 100 points, will be allowed to participate in Thursday's races that determine the field for the 500.

David Hyder, his crew chief, was thrown out of the garage and fined $100,000. Team director Bobby Kennedy also was kicked out.

Waltrip said he was "so sad and embarrassed" but tried to shift blame to an unidentified individual within his team.

"This is not the action of an organization, a manufacturer or a sponsor," Waltrip said in a statement. "This was an independent act done without consent or authorization from me or any of my executive management team."

Waltrip spent all day Wednesday meeting with NASCAR officials, who publicly paraded Hyder and Kennedy through the garage as they were escorted out. Waltrip's Toyota Camry was also on display as inspectors ripped pieces out from under the hood.

His team worked furiously to prepare a backup car, but it had yet to clear inspection and Waltrip got no practice time Wednesday. He will be allowed to race the backup Thursday, if it passes inspection.

Waltrip's penalties came one day after the crew chiefs for 2003 champion Matt Kenseth, Kasey Kahne, Scott Riggs and Elliott Sadler all were suspended. All five drivers also were docked points in an unprecedented move by NASCAR, which never before had taken points before the season.

NASCAR officials would not reveal what they found in Waltrip's intake manifold, but a person with knowledge of the investigation told The Associated Press it was a property contained in jet fuel. The person requested anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the details.

Pemberton said only that the substance was not jet fuel itself.

"We're not going to go into any great detail, but it was a foreign substance that we feel should not have been inside the engine, and we'll leave it at that," Pemberton said. "I don't think this is anything that we've seen in the recent past."

The substance was found during the inspection of Waltrip's Camry before Sunday's qualifying session. NASCAR seized the part and shipped it back to North Carolina for analysis.

Adding the substance, described by NASCAR as an oxygenate, would boost the octane in the fuel, thus making the engine run better at higher horsepower. It was believed by NASCAR that the substance worked its way through the fuel system.

Pemberton said the substance was discovered when a NASCAR official reached his hand into the manifold to feel for loose parts.

"When he brought his hand out, there was a substance on there that was unlike anything he had ever seen in the inspection line before," Pemberton said.

Some rival team members said they thought NASCAR should have taken away more points from Waltrip's team, because in a sport where cheating is common, tampering with the fuel is a rarity.

"Throughout the garage area I think everybody knows you don't mess around with tires, you don't mess around with the engine, the restrictor plates," Pemberton said. "Those things are very taboo."

The last penalty NASCAR issued for a fuel-tampering violation was harsher than Waltrip's. In May 2000, driver Jeremy Mayfield and team owner Michael Kranefuss each was penalized 151 points for a fuel-related violation found at Talladega Superspeedway.

"When it comes to that area, points need to be equal, at least as bad as it was for Jeremy," said Dale Earnhardt Inc. vice president Richie Gilmore.

Gilmore wasn't surprised, however, that Waltrip still will be allowed to race.

"This day and age, with the sponsors and money that are in the sport, you can see why they didn't send him home," Gilmore said. "But the penalty on the points should have been heavier than 100 points."

Waltrip started his own three-car team this season with Japanese automaker Toyota. The Camrys have struggled with speed since January testing, and Waltrip is not assured a starting spot in the field for Sunday's season-opening race.

The cars he fields for Dale Jarrett and David Reutimann both passed inspection. Jarrett is assured a spot in Sunday's race because he's a past series champion; Waltrip and Reutimann must race their way in Thursday.

"This is not the way you want to enter the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series, by any means," said Jim Aust, president of Toyota Racing Development. "But circumstances are what they are, and we'll support NASCAR in any way we can to help to help them find a resolution to the issue."

I'm kinda in favor of cheating in NASCAR, since that's sortta what the whole sport was about.

Today there's too much regimen: They have absurd rules over the body style of the cars, so that they're all supposed to be the same to the tenth-inch.

Johnny Dickshot
Feb 15 2007 11:19 PM

So Jeff Gordon wins one of the two qualifier races today but his car fails post-race inspection (too low to the ground or something) and he gets sent to the back of the field, starting, I think 42 in the 43-car field.

RedSox owner John Henry buys half of the Rouse Racing team and re-names it Rouse Fenway Racing (no kidding). Rouse sponsors Matt Kenseth 17 (former series champion); Carl Edwards 99 (goofy douchebag); Greg Biffle 16 (dork); Jamie McMurray 26 (stroker).

Fun things can happen in the Daytona 500:

It would be cool if Toyota won the damn thing, some of the good ole boys are none too happy about Toyota racing in the great american race.....

Just heard on the pre-game..Rousch racing has teamed up with the owners of the Red Sox to form Rousch/Fenway racing.....Roush has never won the Daytona 500...Chris Myres is calling it a reverse the curse.

Actually, from looking at my TV guide, there were "pre-game" shows from 1:00-1:30 and then again from 1:30 until 2:00, and then the race itself.
Except that it's now almost 20 after 3 and the race hasnt' started yet. And the stupid thing is that there's so much time during the race when they can tell the audience whatever background info needs to be told.

I know it's all about hype and sponsor tie-ins but, Jeez, even televised football isn't this bad

I like to drink Bud in a can on Daytona day ... if this freakin' race don't start
soon I'm gonna need a nap. I was gonna get Busch, which is usually cheaper,
but 18 packs of Bud were cheaper per beer.

This beer update brought to you by Anheuser Busch ... maker of the King of
Beers and the official beer of Nascar.

Makin popcorn.

Gilliland hold onto the lkead thru the first handful, but his buddy Ricky Rudd just disappeared.

I'd be shocked if Tony Stewart doesn't win this thing, btw, but what we need is a return of Jackie Stewart doing commentary.

Montoya a complete nonfactor.

Rather uneventful first half but bodes well for a good finish with 20+ cars within a second.

Stewart and Busch, running 1&2 wreck and it's anybody's race with 30 laps to go. I like that!

Tough break for Stewart -- he was best today until the accident.

Johnny Dickshot
Feb 18 2007 06:54 PM

Kenseth takes out teammate McMurray and collects a few others in a wreck with 6 to go.

So it'll be 3 laps for $1.5 million.

Kyle Busch, running 2nd, has run best all day of the survivors, with 100-year-old Mark Martin in 1st place. M&M car back up to 5th after being a lap down, has a shot as does Greg Biffle in 16 and Elliot Sadler in 19.

KC
Feb 18 2007 06:57 PM

With three laps to go, has there ever been a delay (seems like freakin'
twenty minutes at least now) in a race this big?

Looks like sociopathic driving by Kenseth (17) was the cause of all the excitement.

He not only caused the wreck leading to the Green-White-Checker, he shoved Harvick to the victory then wrecked the entire field behind them!

Martin is saying if he still had anyone behind him, he'd have held Harvick off.

I guess the guy crossing the finish line on his roof, while on fire, still gets credit for crossing the finish line.

Which is why I think Nascar didn't throw that caution. But no matter what Nascar did they were going to have people angry at them. Throw the caution immediately and some would say that they were "giving" Martin the win, and that they should have let the field race to the line because it was the last lap. By waiting to throw the caution they get accused of "stealing" the win from Martin.

My favorite driver is Michael Waltrip, who's made a headline or two recently, LOL! Things haven't started off well, but I'm hoping for success for all the Toyota teams.
