While aware of the criteria for this ... it's still interesting that there's no 2008 slot for Humber.

I wonder if perhaps he'll have Pedro's slot, with Pedro in the 'pen...

Edgy DC
Feb 20 2007 05:53 AM

I see an injury opening the door for him. Likely to Duque.

It's interesting that the entire 2007 projected bullpen is locked up.

Didn't Scarlett's kid (Hieptas) leave the organization last year over a promotion flap? Anyone know if he ever returned?

I'm not familiar with any such flap, and as far as I know Joe is in spring training.

Vargas is locked up for next year?

I'm still on the record as saying Pedro should close eventually.

Frayed Knot

"Vargas is locked up for next year?"

Not "locked up" as far as having an existing multi-year contract, but I think the standard here is that - as an under-6yr player - will still be under team control

You're thinking of Aaron Hathaway. Joe Hietpas is hardly in a position to complain about his assignments.

Yep.
All those catchers with a last name beginning with "H" all look alike to me.

Meanwhile at the UMDB... Yesterday's most popular lookup: Joe Hietpas.

What the hell?

Benjamin Grimm
Feb 21 2007 01:59 PM

Someone at the RCN Corporation in Manhattan spent eight minutes at around 7 p.m. last night continually reloading the page, and then went to a different PC at around midnight and spent another hour reloading Joe Heitpas' page.

My anti-Billy Wyne logic allowed only 20 of those clicks to count towards the total, but I guess it was enough to put him over the top for the day.

I know nobody at RCN.

Burgos

Vargas
It's hard to imagine that Jason Vargas will be more valuable than Ambiorix Burgos this time next year, when they're both out of options. They're both more talent than performance so far, but Vargas' greatest value is being a lefty.

He was a good workhorse as a rookie, but somehow walked more than he fanned last year.

One fun thing about Vargas is that he's a .310 lifetime hitter.

A journeyman catcher at AAA, with 15 games with Milwaukee in 1999 to his credit, but looking like the best of a lot of bad options with Jose A. Reyes scuffling at AAA.

Honestly, though, he probably doesn't qualify, not being controlled by the Mets, so Nickeas and Reyes are it.

watching Cleveland, it seems they've already given up on Barfield at 2b, and Shoppach has the stuff to be a regular catcher. Plus, Betancourt would look good in our pen.

I'm curious about Barfield too. Was he hurt that he came as undone as he did this season? Shoppach needs to cut down on the K's at least a little, but he took a step forward this year and could be a solid regular if given the chance. The Indians have a few good relievers, but given the troubles they had in that department last year I'd be surprised if they consider any of them expendable.

Yeah, the idea is to get a snapshot of where this team is now, or what they'll be fielding in April if they make absolutely no transactions until then.

Certainly the same must be said about LoDuca, at this stage of his career.

TransMonk
Oct 06 2007 04:58 PM

Nope, I wouldn't say with any certainty that the same could be said for LoDuca. He had the 5th most games of any catcher in the NL last season. At any rate, I'm less advocating for LoDuca than I am against Castro.

I have no problem with not bringing Paulie back. But if Castro's the #1 we better have a better backup plan than Mike DiFilice. I believe that if Castro is asked to produce on an everyday basis next year that he is as strong a candidate to spend time on the DL as Alou.

Rockin' Doc
Oct 06 2007 04:59 PM

What is the status of Juan Padilla? Is there any possibility of "Goggles" returning and being in the mix for a bullpen spot in 2008? If I'm remembering correctly, I believe he had some arm problems that required surgery late in 2005.

I think the time is past to push the Castro-over-Lo Duca agenda. They're both looking at the open market now, and the issue isn't Castro vs. Lo Duca, but rather Alomar vs. Ausmus vs. Bako vs. Barajas vs. Barrett vs. Bennett vs. Casanova vs. Castro vs. DiFelice vs. Fasano vs. Gonzalez vs. Kendall vs. LaRue vs. Lieberthal vs. Lo Duca vs. Miller vs. Mirabelli vs. Moeller vs. Molina vs. Paul vs. Piazza vs. Posada vs. Rodriguez vs. Stinnett vs. Torrealba vs. Valentin vs. whoever is available by trade.

As you can see, those first three guys are offensively indistinguishable in their 2007 ineptness. Is Reyes on top because of his major league experience? Is Nickeas, because the Mets thought enough of him to send him to Arizona? Is Arroyo, who the Mets called up to New Orleans for the playoffs over the other two? Does it matter?

A good spring could bump Alen past them all. As could a showng by Brooklyn star Jason Jacobs.

Benjamin Grimm
Oct 30 2007 12:46 PM

This is a good indication of how badly the Mets need to acquire a major league catcher this winter.

I can't imagine any of those guys getting the starting catcher job for 2008. (Maybe one of them could win a backup role, but even that seems unlikely.)

Mike DiFelice is more likely to be the starting '08 catcher than any of those four.

I think Carlos Gomez has a better chance of going north than Ben Johnson.

Edgy DC
Nov 01 2007 07:20 AM

Really? Johnson is out of options, and the Mets don't want Gomez rotting on the bench. I'm guessing he'll be up, and passing Johnson, soon enough, but not until there's a role for him.

sharpie
Nov 01 2007 07:28 AM

It doesn't seem like Willie has much faith in him. When the Mets were hurting for outfielders and he was on the roster he didn't get a long look and he wasn't brought into a September game (unlike Gomez). My guess is that he's gone before ST. Yes, there's a chance they keep Gomez back to give him at-bats in New Orleans but with the possibility of a wide open right field there's also a chance that both Milledge and Gomez get early season chances til one wilts.

Edgy DC
Nov 01 2007 07:39 AM

Johnson's season ended with an ankle injury in August that required surgery.

Gomez hit .118 and OPS'd .318 for the Mets in September.

sharpie
Nov 01 2007 07:43 AM

Didn't know about the end of Johnson's season.

Did know about Gomez's lack of production in September but Willie kept trotting him out there.

Could go either way.

Nov 01 2007 10:30 AM

The Mets may opt for a lefty bat in that slot too (i.e., re-signing Anderson or Green.) And what about Chip Ambres? Do the Mets still have him? I'd probably call him up for a bench spot ahead of either Gomez or Johnson.

Edgy DC
Nov 01 2007 10:36 AM

We're only counting signed guys.

I think Ambres goes down as a minor league free agent, though I'm certain Johnson is currently ahead of him on the depth chart under any circumstances.

Marlon bumps his namesake Hernnadez out of the infield picture for now, though Hernandez is out of options. It certainly looks like the Mets are clearly comfortable with Easley and Gotay as backup shortstops. I think they're also comfortable with nobody.

If the Mets sign another infielder, he instead bumps Ben Johnson out of the outfield picture.

Glavine
This may work out nine ways to Sunday for the Mets ---

1) They get out of a $13 million obligation to a player in decline.
2) He gets signed away before the arbitration deadline, so they can be compensated without the risk of offering him an arbitration hearing that he may just accept.
3) The pick we get as compensation looks to be as good as such picks get.
4) Hopefully, the division rival gets the brunt of his decline.

That list is minor league free agents, al though it's goofy in that it seems to have some of the guys listed by the position they were originally scouted as. Mark Kiger splits time between second or third. He plays short, depending on the team's needs, but he's no shortstop. Brett Harper hasn't played third for years.

J.A. Reyes
The Estrada name could use some redemption around these parts, Chuck having had a 9+ ERA in 1967, a legacy too sour to be undone by Francisco's 1-2 performance in 1971.

Francisco "Paquin" Estrada has a hell of a legacy nonetheless, being (1) the first Met born in Mexico, (2) the presumed record holder for most games caught in organized baseball, and (3) the manager of the Mexican team that knocked off the US in the World Baseball Classic.

Being that Burgos just had TJ surgery and Sosa is still arbitration eligible (ergo: not a FA and still property of the Mets), I suggest that Burgos go off and Sosa go on.

Good point. I forgot about the tomato juice surgery. Amby will be out most of 2008.

There's a lot of major league property up for tha spot: Juan Padilla and Jason Vargas are also in a fish-or-cut-bait position.

On one hand, it's time for acceptance. On the other hand, it's time to scratch my head and wonder why the MLB Photoshop gnomes re-jiggered Church's hat and Schneider's but left Estrada's alone. It's as if those little guys somehow knew all along he'd never take the field for the Mets.

Yeah, they're photoshopping. Some of these photos change within an hour of the time the deal is announced.

Wise looks more stoked than Stokes.

So, we've added Wise, Stokes, and Register to our bullpen mix. None of these are a big splash, but bullpens are splash-resistant things, and it's very often innocuous moves that make the difference with them

I don't know what difference these seemingly innocuous moves will make, but we'll see. A big issue is whether Duaner's shoulder is repaired or his gut is gone.

]So, we've added Wise, Stokes, and Register to our bullpen mix. None of these are a big splash, but bullpens are splash-resistant things, and it's very often innocuous moves that make the difference with them

yes, innocuous moves like Bell+Ring for Adkins+Johnson.

But a good bullpen is often a matter of just getting guys at the right time, and being willing to dump guys going south to try others. That's why its hard to have a good one year-in and year-out.

Edgy DC
Dec 19 2007 10:00 AM

Agreed. It's also why the Schoenewiss deal stunk before the ink was dry. Hopefully this move is more like Minaya getting back to his senses.

Who knows? Maybe losing Adkins is the difference-maker this year.

AG/DC
Feb 19 2008 09:25 PM

Thanks for asking. I believe you're looking at an AFL Scottsdale Scorpion.

Benjamin Grimm
Feb 20 2008 07:22 AM

If the above 25-man roster turns out to be accurate, there will only be four players making their Mets debut on the Opening Day roster: Santana, Church, Schneider, and Wise.

In recent years, the Opening Day debut count has been much higher, more like 10 or 12.

There's been so much roster churn lately that it's nice to see some stability. At least three of the new guys will be playing key roles, so we won't be seeing the same team as we did in 2007. But the supporting cast is mostly unchanged. The Mets are getting significant change without importing a bunch of new faces. I like it.

AG/DC
Feb 20 2008 07:47 AM

Now 2009, there you'll see some change.

Benjamin Grimm
Feb 20 2008 07:58 AM

Probably. Unless a bunch of the 2009 guys debut some time in 2008.

Who's Parnell, and is he related to Mel?

And can that be right? The Mets have another outfielder named Endy Chavez? I thought having two guys named Ambiorix in the organization was impressive, but this outdoes it.

Last year's count was pretty low as well -- only 7 (Alou, Easley, Newhan, Schoeneweis, Smith, Burgos, Sele). 2005 and 2006 were the two big years of turnover.

If you highlight a table at a time and send them to a color printer these
things come out really cool. Ya might have to mess with the scaling a little
but it's worth it to have them handy on your Mets clipboard.

X-Rays on the Goat's ankle are thankfully not showing a break, but I think it looks like this setback and Pagan's hot start are shifting Pagan into the lead for the 25th-man race.

I think I read in the News this morning that Ben Johnson is projected to start the season on the minor-league DL.

AG/DC
Mar 06 2008 07:38 AM

Well, this is starting to stink. Brady Clark is probably next and I have broken tag there and he isn't even appearing.

Let's look at it this way. If Johnson can't go, and if they make no more deals before opening day.

 1. The Goat is ready and takes the last spot as sixth infielder. Marlon Anderson becomes fifth outfielder. 29%

 2. Brady Clark takes the last spot as fifth outfielder. 24%

 3. Fernando Tatis gets the job. He's got plenty of experience, plays both corners, and has had one fine year. 19%

 4. Anderson Hernandez is the man. They suck it up and think defense first. 12%

 5. Jose Valentin somehow recovers in time for opening day, makes the roster with one or two spring appearances. 7%

 6. Olmedo Saenz, pressed into action and his visa problems cleared up, whacks the ball all over the place, and comes north looking to show some of the modest lefty-killingness he had as a younger man. 5%

 7. Michel Abreu may be old and on the shelf for 16 months, but he can rake and the Mets decide it's now or never. 4%

 8. Fernando Martinez hits one long homer, and the Mets decide to give him a ride north, reasoning that two weeks of seasoning on a major league roster can only help him, and there'll be no pressure, as he's just there to sub in some defense, run the bases and get an occasional at-bat in benevolent situations. 3%

 9. Anderson Machado shows a little batting eye, and pleases a Met staff already enomored of anyone named Anderson. 2%

The good news is that the Mets' issuing them for photo day suggests the old standard is the new standard. And that's great.

Castro and Easley have their holograms showing.

Update time, and a few questions.

What's up with Bostick? Is he injured?

This Spring every Mets prospect and suspect was put under a microscope when it came time for appearances and roster cuts. But I don't recall seeing Bostick's name.
The guy has been on the 40 man roster for quite a while, but seems be wearing a cloak of invisibility.
What's his story?

And, anyone betting a few months ago that Cassanove would make the 25 man roster could have made a lot of money, eh?

Gustavo Molina... went an Anderson Hernandez-esque 1-18 on his first go-around in the bigs after breaking camp as Toby Hall's backup.

Gustavo Molina.... is from Venezuela (not Puerto Rico, like his namesakes).

Gustavo Molina... threw out 45.6% of would-be basestealers in 2006, between AA and AAA.

Gustavo Molina... was last seen in number 63 (holy shit!) for the Orioles, after wearing the barely more mainstream 55 for the White Sox.

Gustavo Molina... joins the Mets tonight at Shea.

Or perhaps Bostick will replace Smith, and then Wise would replace Bostick.

And then, maybe after the ten days are up, Smith could replace Sosa.

Like Keith said yesterday , when it's a numbers game don't be the guy with options , is this best for the team?

Benjamin Grimm
May 12 2008 09:51 AM

Well, not for the short term, no, since Smith has been pitching better than Sosa.

But if you take the position that Sosa is a guy worth keeping, then this move would allow them to do so, and they'd be better off in the long run.

I wouldn't just toss Sosa away; he served them well for the most part last year. But I'm also not sure how much he has to offer in the future. But we'll have to see. I think Smith will be back, and sooner rather than later.

Gwreck
May 12 2008 09:52 AM

I also think that unless he has a really good start tonight, Bostick could well replace Figueroa.

Benjamin Grimm
May 12 2008 09:53 AM

Yes. I don't think Figueroa's spot in the rotation is, or ought to be, all that secure.

Gwreck
Jun 02 2008 07:37 PM

Roster crunch time again.

Pedro will be activated for his start tomorrow.

Pelfrey and Muniz have options but neither has exactly pitched (recently at least) in a manner to warrant a demotion.

Vargas and Heilman seem unlikely to clear waivers.

My prediction: Muniz back on the Norfolk shuttle; Vargas to the 'pen.

MFS62
Jun 03 2008 06:01 AM

Yep, that was confirmed on the WFAN update this morning.
Later

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Jun 03 2008 07:18 AM

Not for nothing but I like this arrangement best. Pelfrey for his part has been receptive to working the pen, but I still have faith that one day he begins figuring it out more than not figuring it out and when that balance tips he's gonna be OK+.

Vargas already looks like our best longman since Darren Oliver!

It strikes me that they still have only three real outfielders, with Tatis, Anderson, and Easley faking reguarly at a stadium near you. That's wrong.

Good, you DFA'd Nuñez. Call up a flycatcher NOW!!!!

Agreed, hence my note about not being able to find independent verification. Might use that site as a lead towards info but certainly never as primary source.

John Cougar Lunchbucket

And now Rubin sez they've called up Magilla Aguilla

]Mets call up Zephyr slugger Chris Aguila
Former Marlin Chris Aguila is headed to New York, Surfing the Mets has learned. He’ll replace Abraham Nunez, who was designated for assignment after Tuesday night’s game.

Aguila has been on a longball tear at Triple-A New Orleans. The 29-year-old outfielder, who was hitting .308 with 17 homers and 40 RBI as a Zephyr in 221 at-bats, has slugged eight homers in his last 11 games. He’s played nearly exclusively in left field for New Orleans.
From 2004 through ‘06 as a Marlin, Aguila hit .234 with three homers and 16 RBI in 218 at-bats.

Benjamin Grimm
Jun 11 2008 10:35 AM

So, does Aguila step in as the starting right fielder until Church returns?

I figure, why not?

AG/DC
Jun 11 2008 10:37 AM

Brilliant. The turnaround begins today.

He wore 7 with the Zephs. That's obviously out. Look for him to wear the same 3 he had with the Marlins. Hopefully he can get grandfathered in before it gets retired throughout baseball.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Jun 11 2008 10:48 AM

I wouldn;t doubt he gets the same 6 that went from Evans to Nunez.

Welcome back to only the second known Samoan American and I think the first known Fijian-American to play in the bigs (with some Filipino and Tonganese in there).

This move isn't confirmed with the Mets site yet, but I'm trusting Rubin. I'll assume the corresponding move in New Orleans is the activation of Raul Gonzalez.

OK, the leftfielder goes back on the DL, because, for the second time in short timespan, they rushed a hitter back from injury. They again promote a third catcher instead of an outfielder/firstbaseman/hitter because... I dunno. Rather than go for Casanova, they go for Cancel, who had been sent down recently enough that they do not permit themselves to make Alou's assignment retroactive. Because... I dunno.

They must have their reasons. I'd like to hear them. Catcher depth is not our problem.

I've got nothing against three catchers per se, as long as (1) one of them is a lefty (check), (2) one of them plays another position, preferably not just first base (no check), and (3) one of them hits as well as someone who regularly plays another position (not necessarily the one who plays another position) (no check).

One check in three. No good. I'll take Stearns and Hodges and Treviņo (I even recall a game where all three were in the same starting lineup), but I Schneider-Castro-Cancel, not so much.
