The network's problem is that the show is so expensive to produce that, unless it draws killer numbers, it was essentially born on shakey ground.

They fucked up our parking really badly, so I'm almost obligated to watch. From the promos, it looked like a miniseries though. If it's a whole series, maybe not.

I'm constantly amused by TV news programs that have live remote feeds at 10:00 or 11:00 at night from locations that have long since ceased being newsworthy. It seems very silly to broadcast via satellite just because they can do it, when a report from the studio would be just as informative.

I pretty much never watch TV shows and have never seen most series. That being said, I did watch The West Wing and last night I did watch that Studio 60 show. I won't miss it.

For the first time since the mid-1980s, I am completely TV-free. Not that I don'[t watch it at all, but I don't a "have" a show, not a single one. Only last year, I "had" the West Wing and ER and Boston Legal and a couple of others, but I don't know what happened, this year--nothing.

I also think that this has been a sub-par season for 24. Maybe I would be enjoying this more if it was the second or third season. But the sixth time around, they're not doing anything all that fresh or new, and I feel like I've seen it all before.

i found "the amazing race" to be unwatchable for the reason JD points out, why do i want to watch a race where everyone has to stop and wait for the stragglers to catch up? if i were running the show i'd tell everyone they had to collect 10 tokens around the united states, i'd give them the location (or the general area and clues as to the exact location) for all of them right at the beginning, a few thousand dollars in airfare or other travel expenses, and yell "go!"

My sister is a big fan of this show. She and I and our spouses were in Las Vegas last year for a surprise party for my dad and she had said that she wanted to check out this restaurant at the Hard Rock Hotel called 'Simon's Kitchen' because she and my bro-in-law had seen the chef from it on 'Iron Chef' and he 'won' and they really liked what he did. I've never seen the show but she told me that what they do is give each chef an ingredient and then they have a competition as to which chef can make the best dish. Is that accurate? My sister told us that the ingredient they used on that episode was ground beef and this guy chose to make an 'all-American hamburger' (Jen and I were raised to be big red meat fans). So we get there and hamburgers are not on the menu at all. Jen & Larry were so disappointed and mentioned this to the waiter. The waiter said that, no they did not serve hamburgers but the chef was there that night and he would ask him if he could make burgers for us. 2 minutres later the chef comes out, introduces himself - a very pleasent guy - and says that of course he will make burgers for us. He sends out a platter full of slider size burgers, awesome, awesome french fries and the absolute best fucking vanilla milkshake I've ever had. The night and the meal was a success and to top it off, Christina Ricci was sitting at the next table over and a big fat Robin Leach sauntered through the crowd with a plastic fantastic blonde on his arm.
Yup. Love all of these as well. Design on a Dime, etc. on HGTV
100% agree. That's what I like most about the show - you don't need to know a damn thing about the characters at all. Each episode is simply a crime, an investigation, an arrest and a prosecution. Bam.

i just wish there were more flip-shows wherein the bungling flipper actually LOSES money. i'm tired of super-dumbass billy, who's never swung a hammer in his life, buys a dilapidated house in the wrong market, underbudgets huge renovations that'll price the house out of the market, discovers sever termite damage and disreputable contractors along the way, and still manages a $150k profit and an inclination to repeat the whole process with his cache of claimed lessons learned that we all know he will simply need to relearn the next time.

Exactly right, often it's some kind of fruit or fish and they have to make a five course dinner. It's amazing what they come up with. Fish ice cream comes to mind. To tell you the truth, if someone broke into our house and stole our TV I'll bet it would take weeks for me to notice. However, when I do watch, I enjoy CSI (regular), Law and Order (except the Criminal Intent ones, he give me a headache) and sometimes Unwrapped or Good Eats. Although a little bit of Alton Brown can go a long way.

Yup. And it would be cool if the vacuous couples on House Hunters would for once admit on camera what a rotten decision they'd made to buy this home, how it turned into a nightmare money pit, especially after making the offer before getting an inspection. And, if Suzanne Wong got naked.

A great cooking show is TLC's Take Home Chef. It's a simple premise - a hot Aussie chef picks up a girl (always a girl) in the supermarket and takes her back to her pad to cook for her and her famiily/boyfriend/husband.

Yeah, those are the ones. Seems Von's (except for it's higher end cousin Von's Pavilion) is the worst of the 4. There's a Von's about a block from my apartment, but it's in an old, small building on the beach and it's worst grocery store I've ever been to. There's another north of that has a bad rap and gets called "the ghetto Von's", but that's not fair because the one on the beach is just as shitty, just in a better neighborhood. Albertson's and Ralph's seem about the same to me. On PCH, we've got Albertson's and Ralph's on one side, and across the street is a Wild Oats and a Trader Joe's. Right next door to Trader Joe's is Farm Boy, a strictly fresh fruits and veggies outfit. The Trader Joe's/Farm Boy duo is my preferred attack, but 1) the after-work crowd at TJ's are crazy so you have to go early, and 2) they inexplicably don't sell Perrier, which I love more than anything, so I end up at Ralph's anyway buying my snobby water. I like the quality of the cheeses (and quantity), veggies, and meats at Wild Oats and go there when the higher prices are worth beating some of the crowds. We're got two Trader Joe's and they're both always pretty feckin' crowded.

I vaguely remember that too. It had the same sorta of cool-sounding theme song as "Have Gun Will Travel' which the kids in 'Stand By Me' thought was tough-enough sounding to sing while on their trek for dead body viewing. And, btw, I'm not knocking 'Gunsmoke' or wondering why it ever had an audience. (It was before my time and I don't think I ever saw a single episode). I'm just wondering why it STILL has an audience.

This is where I feel I have to jump in here and stress that despite our common feelings about old tv westerns, Vic and I are not related. (Or the same person) Incidentally, I remember an afternoon LIVE western show on one of the NY stations. It was telecast from Central Park (!!!) and every once in a while, you could see the top of a building over the trees, or hear the sound of an airplane. Anyone else remember that show? Later

Did you try watching it in the middle of a season? I can't imagine following anything on this show unless you see it from the beginning. It's really good once you get your bearings. If you're bored, try getting the DVD's and watching it from season 1. In the middle of season 4 right now and I am still hooked.

Love the show. Got through all the episodes in like a week. Makes me love my city even more than i do now. =) I thought season 2 was the weakest season of all of them. And I'm really disappointed that 5 will be its final season.

It will be back next year for 30 episodes. Six of the episodes will be standalone stories called Heroes: Origins in which a new character is introduced. At the end of the season, fans will vote on which one of the six new characters will become a regular in the following season.

I hope Sylar's dead. The show will be better off if there's a different bad guy each season. The guy who sees you when you're sleeping and knows when you're awake could be that guy. I don't really care who it is, but I want it to be someone different.

Benjamin Grimm May 23 2007 01:34 PM |
One thing that I haven't seen mentioned about Heroes, and that only occurred to me about a week ago, is that Peter and Nathan Petrelli are Italian Americans, but aren't portrayed with the usual stereotypes: They're not mobsters like Tony Soprano and Paulie Walnuts, and they're not simple-minded goofballs like Joey on Friends and virtually every character Tony Danza has played.
|
Willets Point May 23 2007 01:37 PM |
Growing up in Stamford, Italian-Americans pretty much represented the entire spectrum of humanity to me. But that's what happens when you grow up in a lonely Irish-American houselhold in a sea of people with Italian ancestry.
