The previous "all purpose TV thread" has been locked, so let's start another one...

Tonight may be the final airing of Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. Next week it will be replaced on the schedule with The Black Donnellys (about a mobbed up Irish New York family, I think) and NBC says that the remaining episodes of Studio 60 will be aired "eventually."

So barring some kind of miracle, it seems like Studio 60 is pretty much dead. I didn't like the show at first, but it's grown on me a bit. Given how highly it was anticipated, its apparent failure has to be one of the biggest surprises of the current TV season.

The network's problem is that the show is so expensive to produce that, unless it draws killer numbers, it was essentially born on shakey ground.

thats why reality shows are so popular with the networks, they are dirt cheap to make so even if they fail you get your $$ back

I'm constantly amused by TV news programs that have live remote feeds at 10:00 or 11:00 at night from locations that have long since ceased being newsworthy. It seems very silly to broadcast via satellite just because they can do it, when a report from the studio would be just as informative.

For the first time since the mid-1980s, I am completely TV-free. Not that I don'[t watch it at all, but I don't a "have" a show, not a single one. Only last year, I "had" the West Wing and ER and Boston Legal and a couple of others, but I don't know what happened, this year--nothing.

Well, "Studio 60" happened, actually. I was so hyped for it, but the first episode sucked badly, and they went downhill from there, and--I dont know, I just freaked out. I was bored by ER's recurring plotlines, and I missed a few episodes of Boston Legal without recording them, and I found I wasn't missing much, and then I realized that now I have all this free time to myself.

Also, I bought the first season of SFU on DVD, plus a few seasons of Curb Your Enthusiasm, and realized that was a much more enjoyable way to watch TV--my schedule, rewinding over complicated parts, rewatching good eps.

Die, broadcast TV, die! It's all good.

i thought BD was pretty solid... more of an edge than i thought it'd have on network tv.

I loved seeing the back story on HRG on "Heroes"... was that Eric Roberts? What was with the Moe haircut? And Mr. Sulu has a bigger part in the conspiracy than we were lead to believe!

Benjamin Grimm
Feb 28 2007 08:16 AM

I did notice Eric Roberts' name in the opening credits.

I enjoyed the back story too. Really helped us understand the character and where he's been coming from.

This was the first episode of Heroes to concentrate on one story line. No jumping to Hiro and Ando, or Nate and Peter, or Nicki and Jessica. The whole focus was on what was happening at Claire's house.

Law & Order - Watch all of them, regular L&O, SVU, CI.

Rome on HBO - it's just great. Sex, violence - it's got it all!

Seinfeld reruns at 7:30 and 11:00. They never get old. The Keith Hernandez two-parter 'The Boyfriend', was on recently. That one has it all - The Mets, homophobia, the JFK parody and George running screaming from the bathroom with his pants around his ankles yelling 'VanDerlay Industries! VanDerlay Industries!'

24 - I watch it simply because I started to but I'm not thrilled with it this season at all. It's completely ridiculous. Not that it hasn't always been but this year they've just gone completely haywire. I'm bummed because I chose to watch it over continuing to watch Heroes and now I feel ripped off.

Deal or No Deal - I find this show very amusing. People just can't stop opening those freakin' briefcases. No amount of money is enough for them. The people who created this show are geniuses.

American Idol - Have always disiked and avoided this show. However, Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson's (an Oscar winner!) success have made me pay a little more attention to it.

Benjamin Grimm
Feb 28 2007 09:33 AM

I also think that this has been a sub-par season for 24. Maybe I would be enjoying this more if it was the second or third season. But the sixth time around, they're not doing anything all that fresh or new, and I feel like I've seen it all before.

And I agree that Heroes has been more fun this year.

Extras on HBO has also been very funny. And my favorite new show of the year is probably 30 Rock, which I hope gets renewed for next season.

And I still love Lost.

Feb 28 2007 09:54 AM

Shows I watch regularly:

House
Bones
My Name is Earl
The Office
CSI
Numb3rs
(God knows why. It hasn't been any good since the first season, before they turned it into CSI: Math.)
The Dresden Files

We've been watching a DVD of The Addams Family -- early episodes hold up very well, but after awhile, they become a bit tiresome. They weren't repeating jokes as often at the beginning. Morticia and Gomez are always good, and Lurch is great except when he's the focus of the plot.

I'm still trying to convince my wife to watch my DVDs of Arrested Development.

Johnny Dickshot
Feb 28 2007 10:05 AM

I forgot to watch the Donnellys and as usual with a new show, not sure if I can make that committment. My embarrassing regular viewing habits have regressed to:

American Idol -- Not sure why I like this, or even if I like it, I just know I watch it w/ Wifey and we comment along with the panel.

Project Runway/Top Chef/Top Design -- Definitely hooked into Bravo's Wednesday reality show, whichever it is, even though 'Runway' is by leaps and bounds the superior offering here. I'm giving "Top Design" a chance now, mostly based on the fun I've had watching the others -- it's probably the gayest of the 3, which is saying something (a recent episode included gratuitous shots of musclebound capenters with no shirts carrying lumber & power tools on the beach!). The contestants so far appear creepy, especially the Christmas Story kid all grown up and downright fucking scary, and the host wooden. Needs to improve.

Amazing Race -- Irritating in its constant airport bickering scenes and lame "equalizer" tactics but I like the idea of cavorting in strange locales.

Survivor -- Just because.

Law & Order -- Non-appointment watching only. I like SVU most, and I'm least familiar with CI.

I also enjoy 'Family Guy' and "American Dad' and sometimes. 'The Office'

This is actually the first time I've ever peeked in on '24'
That the long-time viewers here are saying it's less than what it was makes sense because while it's not bad - fast-food TV essentially - this half-season certainly isn't worthy of the media attention it kicked up in earlier seasons.

My current lineup:
- House (cracks me up)
- CSI (reg recipe only)
- Scrubs (just re-started)
- ER (old habit mostly ... it has its up years and down)

plus the occasional sprinkling of:
- Earl (lost a bit of it's originality since it began)
- Studio 60 while it lasted (I had mixed reactions)
- Friday Night Lights (teen dramas aren't my thing but it's actually quite well done)

Popular shows I've yet to see even once:
- Survivor
- Lost
- any version of Law & Order
- American Idol
- virtually every other reality show

sharpie
Feb 28 2007 12:50 PM

I have the same lineup as ira. Last year "The West Wing" and this year nothing except I have seen the first few episodes of the Sarah Silverman Program and I'm not sure why. Popular shows I've never seen:

House
CSI
American Idol
Survivor
Lost
24
Heroes
pretty much anything on HBO

I did regularly watch Law & Order once upon a few seasons ago.

I was at a friend's house this past weekend and they were all excited to watch "Monk." I didn't even really know that show existed. I still haven't seen it.

i found "the amazing race" to be unwatchable for the reason JD points out, why do i want to watch a race where everyone has to stop and wait for the stragglers to catch up? if i were running the show i'd tell everyone they had to collect 10 tokens around the united states, i'd give them the location (or the general area and clues as to the exact location) for all of them right at the beginning, a few thousand dollars in airfare or other travel expenses, and yell "go!"

Network:

- HEROES (I'm a sucker for a good superhero story... or even a bad one.)
- STUDIO 60 (while it lasted) and now BLACK DONNELLYS (for a while)
- GREY'S ANATOMY (what can i say... I'm weak)
- ER (my wife makes me watch it cuz i make her watch HEROES)
- LAW & ORDER:SVU - i like Olivia and Elliot.
- TWO and 1/2 MEN (i can't think of any other sitcom thats even remotely amusing)
- AMERICAN IDOL (my daughter makes me watch it)
- SIMPSONS (i only watch the reruns; its still the best show on TV)

Cable:

HBO:
- ROME - awesome
- SOPRANOS - if it ever comes back
- ENTOURAGE - its coming back in April
I miss CARNAVALE and DEADWOOD, and i just can't get into EXTRAS.

BRAVO:
- TOP CHEF - the only reality show that i actually enjoy...

FOOD NETWORK:
- IRON CHEF AMERICA - unless you count cooking shows...

TLC:
- WHILE YOU WERE OUT - ... or home improvement shows.
- CLEAN SWEEP

TNT / A&E:
- LAW & ORDER - you can watch reruns of all the series on these channels. the great thing about the L&O franchise is that the shows are self-contained, not being reliant on the character development of the series regulars (though there is some), so you can watch any episode in any order in any series and still be thoroughly engrossed in good, solid storytelling.

ESPN:

My sister is a big fan of this show. She and I and our spouses were in Las Vegas last year for a surprise party for my dad and she had said that she wanted to check out this restaurant at the Hard Rock Hotel called 'Simon's Kitchen' because she and my bro-in-law had seen the chef from it on 'Iron Chef' and he 'won' and they really liked what he did.

I've never seen the show but she told me that what they do is give each chef an ingredient and then they have a competition as to which chef can make the best dish. Is that accurate?

My sister told us that the ingredient they used on that episode was ground beef and this guy chose to make an 'all-American hamburger' (Jen and I were raised to be big red meat fans).

So we get there and hamburgers are not on the menu at all. Jen & Larry were so disappointed and mentioned this to the waiter. The waiter said that, no they did not serve hamburgers but the chef was there that night and he would ask him if he could make burgers for us.

2 minutres later the chef comes out, introduces himself - a very pleasent guy - and says that of course he will make burgers for us.

He sends out a platter full of slider size burgers, awesome, awesome french fries and the absolute best fucking vanilla milkshake I've ever had.

The night and the meal was a success and to top it off, Christina Ricci was sitting at the next table over and a big fat Robin Leach sauntered through the crowd with a plastic fantastic blonde on his arm.

100% agree. That's what I like most about the show - you don't need to know a damn thing about the characters at all. Each episode is simply a crime, an investigation, an arrest and a prosecution. Bam.

The original IRON CHEF was a Japanese show which they may or may not still show on Food TV.

They really set it up like a sporting event, with some extra fancy flourishes, and overall Japanese-ness that was off-the-charts. Fascinating, funny show. I don't think the USA version has that same feel.

Re: WHILE YOU WERE OUT. If Andrew Dan-Jumbo would strike Evan Farmer in the face with a hammer, or at least cut off his arms and legs with a table saw, this would be a much more enjoyable show.

Of the home-improvement shows I'm into the house-flipping ones now.

Exactly right, often it's some kind of fruit or fish and they have to make a five course dinner. It's amazing what they come up with. Fish ice cream comes to mind.

To tell you the truth, if someone broke into our house and stole our TV I'll bet it would take weeks for me to notice.

A great cooking show is TLC's Take Home Chef. It's a simple premise - a hot Aussie chef picks up a girl (always a girl) in the supermarket and takes her back to her pad to cook for her and her famiily/boyfriend/husband.

What makes the show so funny is the sexual tension. Some of it's real and some of its way exaggerated in the show's editing (they love to use shots of the girls looking at Chef Curtis like they want to sautee and eat him). The girls always want to "slip into something more comfortable" when they get home, which is mostly wanting to look good on TV after they were picked up at Wild Oats, but they way the show is cut, they make it look like they want to sexy up for Curtis.

The show always cracks me up and the recipes are pretty good and most of the time not too difficult. I bet some of the boyfriends/hubby's aren't as thrilled when they actually see the episode.

"Hey, love, wanna go back to your flat and I'll cook dinner for you?"

Yeah, those are the ones. Seems Von's (except for it's higher end cousin Von's Pavilion) is the worst of the 4. There's a Von's about a block from my apartment, but it's in an old, small building on the beach and it's worst grocery store I've ever been to. There's another north of that has a bad rap and gets called "the ghetto Von's", but that's not fair because the one on the beach is just as shitty, just in a better neighborhood.

Albertson's and Ralph's seem about the same to me. On PCH, we've got Albertson's and Ralph's on one side, and across the street is a Wild Oats and a Trader Joe's. Right next door to Trader Joe's is Farm Boy, a strictly fresh fruits and veggies outfit. The Trader Joe's/Farm Boy duo is my preferred attack, but 1) the after-work crowd at TJ's are crazy so you have to go early, and 2) they inexplicably don't sell Perrier, which I love more than anything, so I end up at Ralph's anyway buying my snobby water.

I like the quality of the cheeses (and quantity), veggies, and meats at Wild Oats and go there when the higher prices are worth beating some of the crowds. We're got two Trader Joe's and they're both always pretty feckin' crowded.

Does anyone actually watch 'Gunsmoke'?
I don't mean anyone here (I assume the answer to that is No) but I mean anyone on the entire planet!

I almost never watch those 'TV Land' or 'Nick at Night' channels - most of which are filled with shows I didn't watch the first time around - but I've noticed just from scanning by the channel guides that they seem to show Gunsmoke (also Bonanza) what seems like 10 times a day ... and I just can't imagine that there's still an audience for those shows. Bonanza must be 40+ years old at this point and Gunsmoke like 50!!

KC
Mar 01 2007 02:54 PM

The Western Channel used to show two episodes of the black and white ver-
sion of Gunsmoke every early evening not too long ago and I confess I have
about a half dozen dvds of about 30 episodes.

Good production for the time, decent (often hokey, of course) stories, a part
of tv history. By the time it went color, it was no longer anything special, and
I don't have the patience for it if I happen to flip upon it.

I vaguely remember that too.
It had the same sorta of cool-sounding theme song as "Have Gun Will Travel' which the kids in 'Stand By Me' thought was tough-enough sounding to sing while on their trek for dead body viewing.

Yeah, I enjoyed the episode too.

During the first half hour or so I was imagining all of the angry fans who hate when things move slowly. It was a great setup for the second half, though.

In Episode 2 we will get a look at "Cleaver," the movie produced by Christopher and "Little Carmine" ,Michael Imperioli is my favorite actor on the show,by all accounts I have read David Chase is in fine form for the final season.

OK, just watched it. Gut-wrenching. Made my hair hurt. Made the scene with the rapper early last year make a lot more sense.

How great was it to see the wives take sides only after the guys left? Then greet them with more surprise than anything when both return. What they'll never know is worse and they like it that way.

Is Heroes really ending ending, or just ending for this season?

Hopefully just ending for this season. I believe they've already picked it up for next season.

It will be back next year for 30 episodes. Six of the episodes will be standalone stories called Heroes: Origins in which a new character is introduced. At the end of the season, fans will vote on which one of the six new characters will become a regular in the following season.

I don't care for the voting gimmick, but it's an interesting way to get more episodes and, thereby, fewer reruns or skipped weeks during the TV season.

From the useless information file.....

An installment of "The Big House: Prisons In America," seen last week on the Crime Channel, featured New York's Auburn Correctional Facility. The narrator pointed out that the same make of seats installed in the maximum security penitentiary's auditorium are found in Shea Stadium.

The Devil and Dan Johnston.

You might not have heard of him but probably have heard his music somewhere along the line,or seen his art.

The season finale to Heroes left me disappointed.

Yes, all the characters were assembled in "Kirby Plaza" for the final confrontation with Sylar, but most of them didn't really contribute to the victory.

Nathan came and saved the city. Hiro showed up and finished off Sylar exactly like it happened in that comic book illustration that they've been showing us for months.

I guess the twist was that Claire was spared from having to kill Peter, thanks to Nathan's sacrifice. But that means that Claire didn't really have to be there. Neither did Micah and Nikki and D.L. and Matt and Bennett.

The storytelling in the preceding episodes was fun and interesting, and I enjoy the show, but when you have a lot of setup that setup should contribute to the conclusion.

The best thing from "Chapter 23" was the preview of the second season. It looks like they're going in a completely different direction for the next storyline, which is a great idea. They need to avoid the trap that 24 built for itself, where every season is essentially the same as the one before it.

so we're assuming that sylar is dead? then who/what dragged him into the sewers at the end?

i was looking forward to nathan being the foil against which peter would play next year. since i'm not entirely convinced that sylar is dead, i'm looking at the possibility of a whole nother season of sylar's antics, with no nathan.

on the bright side, even if sylar is alive, there's a badder badass out there, the dude who can see you if you think of him.

am i alone in thinking that george takei is the kinsei dude that hiro's legends tell of?

(if sylar's alive, then we've just got ourselves a rerun of highlander - there can be only one!!!)

and really, why not just shoot peter in the heart, or bop him good on teh head? its been shown that both radioactive ted and peter will stand down when knocked unconscious - why the drama?

I hope Sylar's dead. The show will be better off if there's a different bad guy each season. The guy who sees you when you're sleeping and knows when you're awake could be that guy. I don't really care who it is, but I want it to be someone different.

2-hour season finale of Lost tonight. The show really struggled through the first half of season three, but in my opinion has really picked up steam in the last 10 episodes.

Lost boards are abuzz about what is going to happen. Apparently the producers let slip that there would be multiple deaths in this episode. They've set it up for us to believe Charlie will be one of the casualties, but that may be misdirection.

I don't think Nathan's dead.

One thing that I haven't seen mentioned about Heroes, and that only occurred to me about a week ago, is that Peter and Nathan Petrelli are Italian Americans, but aren't portrayed with the usual stereotypes: They're not mobsters like Tony Soprano and Paulie Walnuts, and they're not simple-minded goofballs like Joey on Friends and virtually every character Tony Danza has played.

They're Americans who happen to have an Italian last name. And that's true of just about every Italian American I've known in my life. So good for the Heroes guys for naming them Petrelli instead of Wilson or Harris or something like that.

And no, I'm not convinced that Nathan is dead either. He could have flown away from Peter before he exploded.

Peter, too, by the way is invulnerable. Maybe his atoms will reassemble themselves like the Sandman's do. I'm guessing that won't happen, but it can't be rules out.

Growing up in Stamford, Italian-Americans pretty much represented the entire spectrum of humanity to me. But that's what happens when you grow up in a lonely Irish-American houselhold in a sea of people with Italian ancestry.
