One and y'all are invited to Varsity Letters, a downtown sports/literary program that runs monthly, on Wednesday March 7, 8-10 pm. Jason and I will be part of a panel discussing online sports writing, blogging and suching. Other sites represented will include Deadspin, the Dugout, With Leather, True Hoop and Dan Shanoff. We'll be reading aloud and answering questions and, presumably, drinking.

The place is the Happy Ending Lounge on Broome St. All the info, with directions, is here:

If you're in something approaching the neighborhood, we look forward to seeing you.

Argh. Wednesday. No way I can make it.

You guys, Leitch, Ufford, Abbot, the Dugout guys, Shanoff.

Missing this sucks.

Maybe I need to care more about ESPN announcers or something, but I dont get Deadspin, or all the love for it.

Faith & Fear and The Dugout all in one place? My head might explode. That's very cool.

It's just some good, clean, dirty fun in a wide world of sports that seems to take itself a bit too seriously.

More unseemly self-promotion related to the Varsity Letters event: Jason and I are interviewed here by Gelf Magazine, the publication that runs the sports/literary program which is coming up Wednesday night 3/7:

Only one of those shakes in that first picture is mine.

Again, info if you'd liike to stop by:

]Also, I'd fire Steve Phillips from ESPN, hire him for Sports Illustrated, and then fire him from there. I hated Steve Phillips as Mets GM for his rare mix of ineptitude and arrogance. Seeing him play the role of baseball expert on television undermines the credibility of the sport, the medium, and the concept of expertise.

ROFL - great stuff Greg :)

Just to square the self-promotional circle, the Varsity Letters event was last night and a great deal of fun, albeit in a setting a little out of my demographic (or, more accurately, psychographic) league.

A recap from the Met perspective:

And some pix, including one of yours truly, second from right at the end of the fourth row (and with blog partner at the far right...spatially if not politically).

There's an alternate-reality meaning to my t-shirt which you may not be able to make out from its (if not my) wrinkles.

Sorry I couldn't make it and old up the place a little. I hope someone suggested to the dugout guys that their best stuff is short -- less than 10 panels please!
