Both halves of the Mets are getting shellacked right now, Chan Ho Park (3 IP, 4 ER) and the A-Team are down 7-0 to the Nats, and Aaron Sele (4 IP, 5 ER) and the JV-Team are getting blitzed by the O's 6-0. Milledge has 2 of the Mets 3 hits against Baltimore. Wright has a single and a steal against the Natties.

Mets can't pitch it or field it today. Nats up 13-nil now after Sosa gives up 6 (three earned) and Joe Smith's now given up 2 earned in the other game. Us: 0, Them: 21

One of those Reyes errors extended an inning (dropped a foul pop w/2 outs) so a lot of those Park runs are going to read 'Unearned' ... but that's not the same as saying he didn't get hit hard. Sele apparently started by giving up 7 straight singles ... and then finished his outing by retiring 14 of the last 15 or something like that ... but it may be a case of TLTL for him.

]Sele apparently started by giving up 7 straight singles ... and then finished his outing by retiring 14 of the last 15 or something like that ... but it may be a case of TLTL for him. without seeing the game i cant say, but when all a guy gives up is singles its often a case of bad luck rather than bad pitching.

Sele happened to be the example used in that study suggesting pitchers had little control as to whether batted balls became hits. That theory has been backed off some since but the idea "when all a guy gives up is singles its often a case of bad luck rather than bad pitching" I think is probably more accepted today because of it. And the theorist works for the Red Sox now.

I recall seeing Al Jackson constantly give up ground ball single after ground ball single through the right side of the infield because neither his first nor second basemen had any range. (Or couldn't bend over) Later
