Houston Mets Good 1st inning for the most likely 5th starter as the final week of Spring Training starts

Reyes gets at 2nd based on a balk despite getting tagged in midst of a rundown

Freakin' Franco makes a nice play on a 2b side grounder and leads Pelfrey I think maybe I'll whip up a dozen egg whites for a snack.
|

Mike Lamb drives in two with a double in the 3rd. So far hardest ball hit off of Pelfrey all day though. 3-0 Astros through 2 and a half innings
|
SteveJRogers Mar 25 2007 12:13 PM |
Jose Valentin rips a 2 out, run-scoring double to make it a one run ball game. Ensberg bobbles Milledge's grounder, Franco scores and we have a brand new ballgame!

Question: When Milledge catches a fly ball, does he always do what he did on his first play today (to end the second, I think)--he looked like was waving off the CFer, Johnson--but Johnson couldn't have been anywhere near the play (it was on the RF line). Does Milledge do the "I got it" gesture even when there's no else's it could possibly be?

Talk about polarizing, Rose and McCarthy were saying Armando Benitez was roundly booed when revealed as the answer for a mid-inning triva question (most saves in a single season by a Met) Reminds me of a story I read in Marty Appel's book about one day in the old Yankee Stadium, in midst of a rain delay during the early 1970's they decided to have a little fun with a newfangled rolling marquee scoreboard. They took the list of the All-Time HR leaders and just scrolled the top 20 or so, as the names rolled the crowd gave applause appropriate for that player, but when it came to Roger Maris' entry there were more boos than cheers, as his relationship with the Yankees and NY was still contentious at the time.

i don't know, but if he does i'd prefer that to the "i don't care about waving people off" attitude that some players have.

I propose there be no Yankee anecdotes in IGTs or STIGTs.

4-3 Astros top of the 6th, Pelfrey's day is done. Jon Adkins in
|
SteveJRogers Mar 25 2007 01:07 PM |
Another Stro run in, 5-3 bottom of the 6th
|
SteveJRogers Mar 25 2007 01:27 PM |
Jorge Sosa walks in a run, looks like it's Sosa's jam to get out of as no one is warming up
|
SteveJRogers Mar 25 2007 01:29 PM |
2 run single by Eric Munson that bloops in.
|
iramets Mar 25 2007 01:31 PM |
10-3 Astros. Pitcher gets an RBI hit, Sosa out of the game, probably out of a Met career.
|
SteveJRogers Mar 25 2007 01:32 PM |
And the hits keep on coming, passed ball, run scores Another run scoring base hit, by the freaking pitcher this time, and Willie is out to bring in a new pitcher just to get one out!
|
SteveJRogers Mar 25 2007 01:34 PM |
Brandon Nall, wearing #89 with no name plate is in. A tall, lanky sidewinding righty.
|
iramets Mar 25 2007 01:37 PM |
Nall gives up the 11th run.
|
SteveJRogers Mar 25 2007 01:40 PM |
11-3 now heading to the bottom of the 7th. Ehem, Met Offense, UNITE AND ASSEMBLE! (insert Zvon's Teen Aqua Swim Martians with Met logos on them)
|
SteveJRogers Mar 25 2007 01:44 PM |
I know it's still ST, but my word, it's not like Fernando Nieve is Johan Santana or anything, but it seems that way since he took over for Wandy Rodriguez
|
SteveJRogers Mar 25 2007 01:46 PM |
Aaron Heilman is in now

If this game counted, it would piss me off that leading off the 7th inning, down by 8 runs, Reyes swings at the first pitch and makes an out. It could be "Oh, hell, it's a ST blowout, let's just GTF outta here already..." but you don't like to see people playing give-up baseball anywhere.
|
SteveJRogers Mar 25 2007 01:48 PM |
Now, THATS more like it! 3 batters faced, three outs (including a DP)

SteveJRogers Mar 25 2007 01:49 PM |

Jackie Robinson would never do that, Rickey Henderson would!
|
SteveJRogers Mar 25 2007 01:59 PM |
Well looks like the more prominent Bullpen guys are doing better than the flossum and jetssum that will not be going north like Sosa and Adkins. Spoiled a good Pelfrey outing.
|
SteveJRogers Mar 25 2007 02:02 PM |
Okay Offense, UNITE AND ASSEMBLE
|
OlerudOwned Mar 25 2007 02:02 PM |
I hope Lastings doesn't need that wrist.

SteveJRogers Mar 25 2007 02:03 PM |
Milledge with a real bad HBP on the hand, out of the game.
|
SteveJRogers Mar 25 2007 02:05 PM |
Slap on those rally caps! (Thats a Zvon creation BTW)
|
SteveJRogers Mar 25 2007 02:07 PM |
8 runs down, 2 outs, runners on corner
|
SteveJRogers Mar 25 2007 02:09 PM |
And thats your ballgame. Damn. I want to say "ah well it's only ST" but still, a little more pride would have been nice, even if the game was torpedoed by a guy who will be in New Orleans in April.

It was a Floyd-esque performance in the "Owie" department but it was pretty clear once he got up and seemed to be using both hands that he wasn't going to miss half a year or anything. W/ or w/o injury, I think fans holding out for him to make the opening day squad over Green are fooling themselves. Now if he's tearing it up in Nawlins and Green hasn't established something though his first 150 PAs, then the talk gets louder.

I was there today. It was scary when Millege went down. What seemed kind of strange was the D from both Wright and Reyes. Seemed like each waved at a couple that were playable. I wonder if Willie told them to avoid getting hurt at all costs, which I guess is fine. Sosa looked brutal.

I thought of the Cliff analogy too while Milledge was down on the ground like he was shot. I suspect the Green death watch is going to start a lot sooner than 150 ABs - like around the home opener for instance unless he manages to net 2 or 3 game-winning hits before then. Green, Park & Sele are prime candidates for the foul-line introduction boo-a-thon.

Not much to add from what was already discussed. Missed the Milledge HBP as I had to duck out after the 7th inning stretch to ensure that I made my flight. One thing that I found somewhat disturbing was some seriously bad plate discipline from Reyes and LoDuca. Yeah, it was a hot day in the sun but I got the distinct feeling that excepting perhaps Reyes' first PA that there was a lack of effort from both of them. Al Jackson was conducting pitchers fielding practice this morning with most of the starters (I saw Perez, Glavine, Maine, Schoenweis, and Sele) but not Pelfrey (who screwed up on covering first early in the game). Juan Padilla: White Hummer H4.

the "green death watch" should start right away. not that the fans shouldnt support him until he actually does fail, but when the team has a player who is a huge upgrade defensively and looks to be one offensively ready to go theres no need to let a green slide last too long. its hard to speak definitively about how long he gets and how much he must suck, and milledge's numbers at AAA probably factor in as well. i think what the mets should do is decide internally what they expect, at a minimum, to get out of milledge if they play him every day (.265/.315/.425?), factor in the defense (maybe 20 pts of ops to be conservative?) and then give milledge the job if green isn't producing those numbers or better. how many ABs do you give it? well i think it depends how far below expectations he is. if he's hitting .200 after 50 ABs it might not be time to can him yet, if he's doing it after 150 ABs say hello to milledge. of course if he's hitting .100 in 50 ABs its milledge time!

Pay a guy bazillions to sit on the bench so a rookie with more ability plays full-time? The Mets? A plan? No, Green would have to be batting .150 in July (about 300 ABs) and Omar-dolls would have to be burned in effigy and Willie-dolls stuck with pins, first. Personally, I think I would need to have about three strokes on this one issue before they change policy about who plays RF. And even then they wouldn't announce a change in policy. They would invent some transparent nonsense ("Green is mourning the loss of his pet guppy Fido, and is taking a few games off. During this troubled period, we will start a variety of rightfielders, including but not limited to Milledge, Art Shamsky and the late Richie Ashburn...")

This talk of Milledge sticking on the roster for the first two weeks and then getting sent down reminds me of a similar plan for Benny Agbayani in 2000. He got off to a good start and ended up sticking around for the entire season. I'm hoping that Milledge has a similar experience this year.

I just like 150 as a number because it's twice what seamheads believe is the largest sample size that can still fool you. I believe the rule of thumb is "anybody can hit anything in 75 ABs." 100 ABs, or 150, is much, much harder to fake.

Well Matsui - who was owed more money than Green currently is - was dumped (w/money eaten) in favor of less promising backups in early June after 130 ABs last season and was removed as a starter prior to that. Not sure if dolls or curses were a factor in any way.
