Round out the Zephyrs

The Mets are reportedly still in the market for some new emergency stock for New Orleans. They supposedly want to grab an experienced catcher (are DiFelice and Reyes getting disrespected?), in case Sandy Alomar, Jr. won't accept a minor league assignment (he said earlier that he wouldn't) and a shortstop with more pop than Anderson Hernandez. I'm going to go ahead and nominate the recently sent down Blue Jay Russ Adams for the latter job. Search the scrap heap and help the Mets fill these all important roles!

What's Jason Phillips doing these days?,for whatever reason I have this impression that some veteran players have no desire to go to New Orleans,it can't be that bad there....can it?

Interesting. JP (no longer begoggled as Bono) is also Blue Jay property. He's currently competing with Sal Fasano for the backup catcher job. We may get a crack at the loser, though neither is hitting a lick. I'm guessing there's more than a few who don't share your fondness for bringing back Art Howe-era Metlies.

My limited experience watching Jays games convinced me that Adams isn't capable defensively at SS. Is this a vote of nonconfidence in Mike Nickeas? I guess this kind of talk also signals that Anderson Hernandez isn't long for the org. He's doing the No. 1 jersey no favors.

Nickeas is slated for AA. I think they share your concern with looking for anything from Di Felice or Reyes if a catcher goes down.

In his blog for the Journal News, John Delcos notes that the Mets have signed 32-year-old third baseman Fernando Tatis to a minor league contract. The Los Angeles Dodgers released Tatis last Wednesday, three days after he failed to report to their minor league camp. Tatis was a non-roster invitee to Dodger camp, and hit just .158 this spring training, going 3-for-19 in 10 games. He played in 28 games for the Baltimore Orioles last season, hitting .250 with two homers and eight RBIs.

The Dodgers could use Tatis this morning. I might be 102 years old and if you asked me about Fernando Tatis, I'd sputter out "Two grandslams in one inning! Yessirreee!" Boy, his career fell off a table in the new millenium.

Fernando originally signed with Texas, and had his greatest run with Montreal. I checked at SABR and guess which scout signed him for Texas?

Didn't Tatis do that with the Expos and hadn't he done it before or something crazy like that?

One good outing gets him down to a 6.11 ERA and he's issuing an ultimatum. Nice.

The hell with him.

Sele signed a minor league contract, dinny?
|
Edgy DC Mar 23 2007 02:02 PM |
Yup. If they didn't have room on the 40 for him back in January, what makes him think a 6+ ERA is gonig to get them to clear room on the 25? He's not standing on very good ground.

Sele can afford to feck off home... 1993 Boston Red Sox $109,000

Frayed Knot Mar 23 2007 02:16 PM |
Anyone remember who Tatis had his 2 Granny inning off? ...
Sele signed a minor league deal simply because there was no reason to sign him to anything else. But I think he was up front all along that he was fighting for a ML job - either here or by attracting enough attention to get one some place else.- and that it was all or nothing.
|
Edgy DC Mar 23 2007 02:20 PM |
See, I don't expect him to be fighting for anything less than a big league job. The ridiculous part is his seeming expectation that he's done what he needed to do to win it.

FK, you didn't give us a chance to guess... I knew it was Park. Fernando Tatis' career falling off the table = roids? You hate to just assume that, but... I don't know that Sele issued it as an ultimatum, per se; he's just saying he feels like he's reached a level where he shouldn't have to linger in AAA. No big whoop. Seeya, Aaron.

I don't see where he's said that, or even implied it.
|
Edgy DC Mar 23 2007 02:54 PM |
You don't see "Totally out of the question; it's the big-league level or I'll go home" as having an implicit demand to go north? I suppose it doesn't have to be read that way, but it's sure hanging out there. I guess we need more context.
|
Yancy Street Gang Mar 23 2007 02:58 PM |
It could also be interpreted as, "If I'm no longer good enough to pitch in the big leagues, then it's time to go home."
|
Frayed Knot Mar 23 2007 02:59 PM |
|
No.

Hey, thanks for the elaborate answer.

OK - what Yancy said.

Zephyrs roster includes Sandy Alomar Jr.: http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?t=t_ros&cid=588&stn=true&sid=t588 Three catchers on the roster and they're all over 30.

Who's on First? Is Michel Abreu still in the system?
|
Yancy Street Gang Apr 03 2007 03:14 PM |
Good question! Who IS on first in New Orleans? Here's Binghamton. It's where we can find young catchers. And TWO first basemen.
|
Yancy Street Gang Apr 03 2007 03:19 PM |
Here's what a New Orleans baseball cap looks like. I never bought a Tides cap because I always thought they were ugly. So I checked out what a Zephyrs cap looks like. Better, but I'm still not tempted.

Those rosters may be a bit preliminary.
|
Yancy Street Gang Apr 03 2007 03:38 PM |
The St. Lucie roster included Mike Pelfrey. I don't know if it's a 2006 roster that hasn't been updated yet, or if they're parking him on that roster for the first couple of weeks.

OlerudOwned Apr 03 2007 03:41 PM |
http://www.bmets.com/news/viewarticle.asp?a=1022 3rd paragraph. Apparently Abreu has been hurt.
|
seawolf17 Apr 03 2007 04:08 PM |
That Zephyrs infield is going to allow a lot of ground-ball singles, with no first basemen and no shortstops.
|
Gwreck Apr 03 2007 04:48 PM |

He is indeed parked in St. Lucie until he's needed for his first start in the bigs this year.
|
Edgy DC Apr 04 2007 12:53 AM |
Two first basemen is never a problem in the minors, as one will be a DH. What is interesting is that the New Orleans roster shown is something more than speculative, since it includes Ricky Ledee, resigned on March 31st after Oakland released him five days earlier, but it also includes Blake McGinley who had been reported released before Ledee was re-signed. Is McGinley back in the picture or wot?
