Going To The Game

Mar 25 2007 07:33 PM

It's not too early to get this started.

If things go the way we hope this week, my husband and I will be traveling to Philadelphia next weekend to visit my daughter and her boyfriend and we will be attending the Phillies/Red Sox exhibition game next Saturday.

Can't wait!

(and I hope I didn't jinx it)

March 31st I'm seeing Mets @ Devil Rays at Tropicana Field.

I've been to the past two games at St. Lucie. The offense hasn't looked great, and Jorge Sosa was flat-out terrible today.

But it sure is fun to get to see the Mets in person!

Despite Pelfrey getting crushed and the Devil Rays spelling his name wrong, it was a fun game to be at. Tropicana Field is a nice little stadium, especially because it was ridiculously hot today and Tropicana is air conditioned. The Mets fans easily outnumbered the Devil Rays fans. We got a lot of "Let's go Mets!" chants going, but everytime we did, something bad happened. If I can find the stupid wire I lost, I'll have pictures up soon.

Scored last-minute opening day tickets. Way out in the outfield upper deck, but still. First time I've been since O.D. 2002.

Enjoy.

Dress warm. Almost as if you were going to see the Jets. Even sunny opening days usually cut right though your jacket. Introductions alone can be brutal.

Have a great game.

there's a fairly good chance that i'll find myself at baseball games in teh extreme southwest, later in april... once with the d-backs in phoenix playing the rockies, and later that week with the padres paying the d-backs.

there's just not much else to do on off days in yuma, arizona.

Back from Philadelphia with three observations:

1) Citizens Bank Park is really really nice.

2) The Phillie Phanatic was red!

3) The pitcher the Red Sox paid a trillion million dollars for pitches way too slow.

Edgy DC

The new stadia and arena in Philly are really far from downtown.

Benjamin Grimm
Apr 01 2007 05:18 PM

Yeah, they botched the location.

I thought the perfect place would be near 30th Street Station, but that land wouldn't have become available until 2006 or something like that. So rather than delay the new stadium by a couple of years in order to get a better spot, they were hasty and built it in the same complex where Veterans Stadium was.

I've seen Philadelphia screw up so many different ways it doesn't surprise me that they screwed up this one too.

It is a nice ballpark, though. It's just in a bad spot.

Edgy DC
Apr 01 2007 06:05 PM

The funny thing is that they made it three times.

For 10-15 years, ballparks and arenae have been the crown jewels in the revitalization of urban downtowns. Oops, Philly missed the memo.

Was in Tampa this past weekend and went to the Yankee-Tiger tilt rather than the Mets-D'Rays (horrors!). It was a gorgeous day and who the hell wants to sit inside?

Observation: Yankee fans can't catch foul balls.

Will of course be at Opening Day at The Big Shea on Monday.

Barring Divine Intervention, this will be the first home opener I've missed since

I'm not a resident, but am a frequent visitor to Philadelphia, and I don't get this. Sure, it's not downtown, but I wasn't under the impression that Philly was one of those cities (read: Detroit...Cleveland...et al.) that exactly needed a downtown revitalization.

It's next to the two major interstates and it's easy to get to. There's plenty of parking. It's easily accessible from public transportation. Seems pretty good to me.

Benjamin Grimm
Apr 02 2007 09:43 AM

It doesn't compare to a spot that you could walk to from downtown. And unlike Shea, there's only one public transportation option, the Broad Street subway. (The SEPTA lines don't run there.)

If they had built it at 30th Street it would have been convenient to all SEPTA lines, plus the Market Street subway and Amtrak, and it would also have been right near I-76. The skyline would have been visible over the outfield fence. It would have been a great spot. What bugged me was that the reason against it was a two-year delay. I think a much better location is worth that wait. Veterans Stadium wasn't about to fall down or anything.

The other site that the Phillies and the city wanted was a few blocks north of Market Street, on the border of Chinatown and right behind the Philadelphia Inquirer's building. The NIMBY crowd killed that plan; they said that having a baseball stadium would compromise the distinctive architectural flavor of the Chinatown neighborhood.

Nobody asked me, but my response to that would have been to build a Chinese style ballpark, with pagodas and dragons and whatever else would fit it into the neighborhood. How unique and distinctive would THAT have been? It could have been called Citizen's Bank Park at Chinatown and it would have been unlike any other ballpark in the country.

Edgy DC
Apr 02 2007 09:51 AM

Word to Yancy's mother.

The city is still losing population, and while they've invested in the revitalization of several districts, there are still wide swaths of poverty and urban blight.

The argument for cities financing ballparks is that it attracts revenue to the surrounding area, so why build it in an area on the outskirts?

Yancy, you might be taking the piss but I love this idea....it would be compulsory for Charlie Manuel to dress like Chairman Mao for the post-game.

Gotta agree.

Philly's great, the stadium parking was plentiful, lots to see right there with the Spectrum and the football park (forget its name) and the giant junkyard fire over there in New Jersey.

Took 15 minutes from my daughter's house, including parking the car.

Benjamin Grimm
Apr 03 2007 04:41 AM

Well, it may be in a good location for out-of-town visitors, but it's not in a good location for the city and its residents.

Cooby, you were able to get in and out of the stadium without experiencing the city of Philadelphia at all. Good for you, bad for Philadelphia.

I think you just solved a mystery for me coob.

I was flying in from Tampa on Sunday at about 5:00pm or so and as we were making our initial approach into Newark Airport there were these enormous clouds or plumes of smoke far off, and I believe, to the south. We were wondering what it was and I'm betting it was that fire.

Are they still doing the Fan Fest for Kids before weekend games? I thought maybe not because of the construction. And I can't find any confirmation of it on the Mets official site. I got tickets for two Friday night games and if the Fan Fest is there, I'll need to arrive early.

Incidentally, how has parking/traffic really been this year? I'll have two small kids and an impatient wife with me...should I go right for the Shea lot, or look for parking somewhere along the #7 line and hop the train. If that's the case, can someone suggest a good (safe) stop on the #7 line?

Benjamin Grimm
Apr 23 2007 09:26 AM

Last year I went to Shea twice. Both times I parked on First Avenue in Manhattan, where the parking isn't quite so expensive and then got on the 7 train at Grand Central.

Depending on where you're coming from, of course, that may not work for you.

Gwreck
Apr 23 2007 11:11 AM

Hahn, where are you coming from? I agree with Yancy's strategy but where you are driving from could indeed give you better alternatives.

There is no Fanfest this year. The area behind the bullpens is extremely tight, and between a fire lane and the players parking lot that whole area is basically gone.

With respect to parking at Shea -- between the lost spaces and the high attendance (sellouts both Saturday and Sunday) -- it's pretty bleak, especially on the weekend. Unless you are able to get there, say, at least 90 minutes before the game don't bother trying for the lots close to Shea.

---

Weather today is just beautiful. Serious consideration to going tonight.

HahnSolo
Apr 23 2007 01:29 PM

I'm actually coming from Orange County. So I have an hour's plus drive on top of whatever public transportation I take.

I would prefer not to drive into Manhattan. I thought about parking near Northern Blvd in Forest Hills. It would be two short subway rides from there, but at least I'm somewhat familiar with that area.

Nymr83
Apr 23 2007 01:30 PM

i went friday night and had no trouble parking in the main lot at 6:15 or so. i'd expect its harder on a saturday/sunday or when the weather is nicer.

Gwreck
Apr 23 2007 02:35 PM

If you're familiar with the area, by all means, go with that.

Some of the better stops along the 7 train for parking are in Long Island City, or closer to the stadium (90th, 103rd streets). The Junction Boulevard stop area is also a viable option, and will be easier to find given its proximity to a more major road. All are fine for weekend games.

When, and how, are they going to stop doing the NYPD and FDNY caps?

You know they're not going to be doing it in 2075, so at some point it's going to stop. I guess they'll do it when they sense that few people will care. As we can tell by the outcry about Channel 7 originally deciding not to televise the reading of the names, that year hasn't arrived yet.

Maybe when the memorial opens at the WTC site.

I'm probably going to be looking at doing the same thing on Saturday.

Man, I miss those days.

I used to go to games spur of the moment by myself a lot.

3 kids and a house in the 'burbs put a stop to that real quick.

Planning on being at Shea on Sunday with all three of those monkeys.

Monday night at the Bobby, Outfield Loge, Section M51, right behind the rightfield pole. Come by, say hi. I'll buy you a nacho.

SteveJRogers

I would be there on Saturday, if not for an old college buddy of mine's wedding. Interestingly enough the wedding ceromony is taking place in the chapel on the Fairfield University campus! He lives in the town of Fairfield. Reception is in Westport though.

Yes, still going.

Just me and my 10 year-old, 8 year-old and 6 year-old. I'll be lucky if I get to see an uninterrupted half-inning.

My daughter's going to make make another sign so keep an eye out.

Soupy, did that suck or what?

Fortunately, i had to go pick up my son by 5, so we left after the 7th. But my daughter is hardcore. She wanted to stay till the bitter end, and she pouted in the car until the final out.

6 errors, 11 walks. Man. That had to be the worst game i've ever seen them play in person.

soupcan
Sep 17 2007 08:37 AM

I totally saw you.

We left after the 7th as well, walked out by the Mets shop behind home plate - you wearing a gray shirt and a black Mets hat.

I yelled your name and then one of my kids grabbed my attention and when I looked up you were gone.

Yes it totally sucked and I think it was possibly the worst game I've been in attendance for.

I was sitting next to some Phillies fans and they were bummed after Beltran tied it at 5. I told them not to worry.

Being there by myself with three kids was also no easy feat. I must have gone to the bathroom 7 times with them and since one was my daughter I had to clean pee off toilet seats in the men's room at least three times. That was fun.

Edgy DC
Sep 17 2007 09:25 AM

At least it wasn't the game you used as your wedding reception. That couple's got to wonder what the future has in store.

Vic Sage
Sep 17 2007 10:37 AM

They probably figure their marriage has nowhere to go but up!

It's like that scene in GARP, where the plane flies into the house, so Garp decides to buy it because its been "pre-disaster-ed".

Yeah, Soupy, that was me in the grey shirt. I didn't hear you. We were in box 215, which was probably right behind you, in the first box above the walkway.

Their not my seats.. i buy them from a guy i know, though, so i get 3-4 games/yr from him. I love those seats. But not on days like that.

Woke up thinking I need to be there -- see them pull this thing out, or even if
they just fuck it up to historical proportions -- live, in person.

Got a single upper box seat on metsdotcom. I'll probably hang out in the mezz

I'm going in.

SteveJRogers
Sep 29 2007 08:36 AM

One issue if I may. Back in July/August whenever it was, they had Ralph Kiner night, and they presented him with a special plaque, akin to the one they gave Bob Murphy on his night, and gave Carter honoring his induction into Cooperstown. And they said that it was going to be hung alongside them in the Diamond Club Lobby (where the HOF is).

Well I was there in the Astro series, and Ralph's plaque STILL ISN'T UP! If its not up today, I'm going to be convinced that they are going to do it when the new Citi Field Mets Museum goes up in 2009.

By the way, I mentioned it in an IGT, but I just realized about 2009. Its going to be weird, and sad as well (especially to those who were there when it happened), to see the Mets honor the 40th anniversary of the 1969 Mets in a freshly opened ballpark while the site of the Miracle (and all three of the celebrations) is nothing more than a parking lot.

Yip! No Kiner plaque. Ah well, nothing you can do about it, just have to wait a year before I can get a nice photo of it.
