All-purpose threads

I thought the A-P threads were kept on the main board and not moved to the archives until after the season was over? I look and see the A-P Yankees thread, Wifey Watch and Caption This 2007 threads all in the archives already. Strange.

Eh, no biggie. Sometimes threads that die of neglect or just run their course maybe weren't meant to live anyway. JMO, but I think we've become too reliant on "All Purpose" threads. They're fine for certain things but also tend to get boring. Not everything that happens to the Yanx needs to go in the same thread, or everything that occurs to every ex-Met needs to be herded into one thread, and so on.

This post really should have gone into the All Purpose All Purpose thread.

I want Wifey Watch back!

We'll re-launch Wifey Watch, but the one we got started on was retired. The funny thing about A-P threads was that the designation became part of the culture, and people started prefixing "All-Purpose" onto threads that had a single purpose. One danger of them is when they become one-way threads, where people post stuff to add to them but there's no conversation. I'm likely as guilty as any with the Rico Brogna thread.

The main danger of them is that people stuff everything in them that even remotely relate to the topic.

I think what may have contributed to the over use of AP threads was posters(me included) would at times be unsure about starting new threads for a topic, especially when after starting one someone points you towards the AP thread. I think for the most part that doesn't happen anymore.

Yup. And if an interesting extended or provocative develops out of an all-purpose thread, I'm more than willing to split. Mostly, I like Rico for when I'm doing research on individual Mets.

Somehow this forum - which has got to be one of the more loosely moderated ones around - acquired a reputation of being just the opposite.

I should also say that adding modifiers like "all-purpose," "official," etc., onto thread titles began as something of a joke as if to say, "We can't possibly be taking this topic so seriously, can we?"

Yup. Anybody who tells you "That goes in the All-Purpose Yadier Molina's Ass Thread" should be considered, but hardly bowed to.

Here are the All-Purpose threads that have been archived in the Baseball and Non Baseball forums. Some of them are very narrow in scope, such as "AP Getting Mets and Non-Mets confused, by causal fans thread" and "All Purpose Bitching About School Supply Shopping List" and "All Purpose Pedro's Big Toe Thread" A.P. Is this the All-Purpose Discussion of All-Purpose Threads?

Every one of them is real. They're all in the off-line archives. There are probably a bunch more in the active forums, but I didn't even look at those.

Didn't there used to be some threads starting with "General All Purpose..."? Or did I see those on a different board a few years ago? Later
