There's nothing in papers about his last-minute callup, but The Virginian-Pilot just happened to run this nice profile shortly before his promotion.

He's unlikely to have any relation to Vicente Padilla, so stop thinking that, as he was born in Puerto Rico and Vicente in Nicaragua. He was sprung from the town of Rio Piedras, the same lugar de nacimiento that gave us Jose Oquendo, Rey Sanchez, Tito Navarro, and Pedro Feliciano. But he grew up in Levittown. Who knew that there was a Levittown in Puerto Rico?

He's college educated and went to visual arts school. Pretty interesting, that. His wife is named Ericka.

And he looks dapper on the mound, are those shades or glasses he wears?

He's a handsome devil.

He was stylin in those shades. The matchup of Padilla v. Andruw Jones was like a commercial for Sunglass Hut.

The Blue Jays' Gustavo Chacin leads the league in stylin shade performance this year.

hopefully he will get better treatment than Jose Parra did last year. IIRC, Parra similarly excelled as Norfolk closer, looked pretty good for the Mets in July as he increased his role from mop-up to setup, and then was sent to DL with a very questionable injury (stiffness in hip caused by sleeping too close to an air conditioner) to make room for Scott friggn' Erickson. He then suffered a real injury to his pitching arm while rehabbing in the low minors and has not been heard from since.

Parra was released at the end of the season. I was thinking about him relating to Padilla also.

Juan Padilla the Poet..

Crystal and Juan

They fight all day
Cry all night
Love one day
Hate the next fight night
They're lieing and try to compete
They haven't shown no grief
Love to they bleed.

Illusions and screaming
Their talking with no sense
Damn, they got separated again.

They're lost I was there,
They both act by reflex
They really care.

Look, Crystal and Juan together again
I'm not amazed
I was right, they are a pair
Forgiveness, they kissed
I hope life treats them well.

They try to laugh
Enjoy to coupe
They take a grasp
I hope they don't let go.

Yet they hate each other
For fighting those nights
They both cry,
Constant change erupts.

They act, confused
Avoiding one another
Silly little ones
Again, they're back for another.

Their holding, kissing, they don't wanna let go
They promised on vowels for a happy home
Children and grandkids
One dog and one cat
A peaceful family at last.

Beer and free lunch
A kid running around me
They're both wearing pink
Their both really lovely

I like that day
I want that day
I'll pray for that day
....One day.....
