Been a long time since the Mets played with three healthy catchers.

'Twould be interesting if that meant Piazza got an occasional start at first against lefties.

No, he means pitcher Jose Santiago, he's a sinker ball pitcher which Cohen speculates with the Mets going to Coors field that was one reason he was called up.

Curious move, that, with the upcoming visit to Denver and all.

D'oh. Jose Santiago:

Bats R, throws R, 6-3, 210 lbs.

Jose Rafael Santiago was signed by the Mets as a free agent prior to the 2005 season...He was originally drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 70th round of the 1994 free agent draft...Graduated in 1992 from Carlos Escobar Lopez High School in Loiza, Puerto Rico...Traded by the Royals to the Phillies on 6/5/01 for RHP Paul Byrd.

7-5, 4.45, 53 K, 34 BB, 126 H (10 HR) in 109.1 IP.

Let's hope he's a sinkerballer.

Benito was released or something

He's been a'ight this year in Norfolk, alternating between pretty good starts and poor starts. His last start came on July 19, where he went 5.2 IP, gave up 10 H, 6, R, 5 ER, 2 BB & 1 HR, K'ing 4.

This year in Norfolk, he's averaged 0.825 HR/9, which isn't bad.

Oh, and he IS a sinkerballer. We'll see how he does in Colorado, I guess . . . I imagine that we'll use him in long relief whenever one of our starters gets hit hard.

But breaking balls break late in the high altitude, which is why none of the sinker-ballers the Rockies have tried to bring in have ever worked out.

WWSB is on the FAN and it sounds like Santiago has a chance to stay here for a while, if he pitches well of course, basically they feel Bell needs to work on a 3rd pitch in Norfolk.
