Tonight's pre-game discussion topic: Braden Looper: Most irrational hate for an ex-Met in the last 10 years. Agree or disagree?

His last name is Hernandez, but he's not fooling anyone with his espaƱol.

Looper is through 1, but I'd expect as much from an ex-reliever. the question with this guy is can he go 5+ every night?
|
Frayed Knot Apr 04 2007 06:24 PM |

Maybe not the most irrational (that field is VERY wide open) but for a guy who had one pretty good year here to go along with his one pretty lousy one, there's an awful lot of fans who act as if he's one of the most incompetant pitchers in MLB history.
|
Johnny Dickshot Apr 04 2007 06:33 PM |
Looper could have taught the Mets and their fans that they didn;t have to spend huge $$ for a closer, but he wound up scaring them into spending gigantic $$ for a closer. That's because we for some reason were reluctant to shut him down or try someone else when it was obvious the guy should have been in the hospital. Anyway Looper always preferred No. 41 and there he is in it again. Alou hits everything hard.

Reason #1432 to love the SNY booth: Frank Zappa discussions.

Nymr83 Apr 04 2007 06:39 PM |
was Alou's catch really that nice or Wilson's ball that deep? the radio made it sound like it was leaving the park off the bat.
|
OlerudOwned Apr 04 2007 06:39 PM |
Alou knows how you feel, Preston.

Big hanger up in the zone that was a lot like Alou's, in terms of how it looked off the bat. Alou got to it on the warning track, rather anticlimactically.

cooby Apr 04 2007 06:49 PM |
I'm not so sure it was irrational
|
Johnny Dickshot Apr 04 2007 06:50 PM |
Looked like a HR off the bat for sure but hung in the sky long enough for Alou to catch up to it on a slow gallop. Looks also that it went to a particularly deep part of the LCF gap. Too bad Preston Wilson.

Nice! I rarely fail to point out Looper's middle name. I like the way you did it this time around.

'Bout time for a Beltran Boom. He couldn't shut us out forever.

Finally, the explosion we've been waiting for. I was afraid that blast was going to hook foul like the one he hit opening day.
|
Johnny Dickshot Apr 04 2007 07:32 PM |
That was a big single for Green.
|
OlerudOwned Apr 04 2007 07:32 PM |
Big 2-out hit for Green, with Looper reeling in the 6th. I guess we know how big his tank is now, huh.

Nice Rosey Roswell reference there Mole. One good thing about Curt Smith's books is that it highlights the lesser known local institutions who were not in the elite "future Ford C. Frick award winning" crowd
|
Nymr83 Apr 04 2007 07:33 PM |
still a successful first start from Looper, 5 scoreless from an ex-reliever is hte best you can expect before he gets hit

I told youse guys Green was gonna bust out of the gate quickly this season. Agreed on Looper, ny, definitely a quality start given the circumstances. (quality not the quality that some people call quality which I don't really buy

Fun trivia, Bob Prince (who was one of that well known variety) was his second in the both, his job was to throw down a waiters plate that had nuts, bolts and other stuff on it to simulate a window crashing. One other time Bing Crosby, who was the co-owner of the Bucs at the time, was in the booth talking about Ralph Kiner, Kiner than mashes a ball and just as Bing says it's out of there, Rosey steps over Bing, steals the mike and goes into his call in a very John Sterling-esque way.

Mets looking nice again tonight, and I'm happy to see the power from Beltran. I was grumbling to myself about Reyes flying out in his first few at bats, but it's hard to complain after his homer. Still, I wonder if he's been gunning for a dinger all game. It's like he was out to get Looper. Not that I can blame him. I loved Loop his first year, but that second year was painful. I don't personally value pitchers trying through pain on it's own--they have to be effective at the same time, and he wasn't. Of course, he shouldn't have remained our closer while he was struggling, and that's not Loop's fault, but still . . . Maine's sharp tonight, and it looked like he had an intelligent game plan--mostly fastballs to start, then working in the slider and that new change of his, which has looked a'ight so far. Keep it up, boys!

At least Preston didn't get hit in the head.
|
OlerudOwned Apr 04 2007 08:13 PM |
Maine done after 7 scoreless. I guess they want Burgos to get two innings.
|
OlerudOwned Apr 04 2007 08:15 PM |
Oomph.
At least it didn't hit him in the head.
|
Nymr83 Apr 04 2007 08:16 PM |
haha, its turning into a laugher! and just as i'm typing reyes drives in two more.
|
Johnny Dickshot Apr 04 2007 08:16 PM |
Seeing as Burgos was coming in, that was a relief. God the Cardinals suck. 9-zip!
|
TheOldMole Apr 04 2007 08:17 PM |
The hits just keep on coming.

That's a brutal outfield they have, few things are sweeter than seeing LaRussa pissed in the dugout.
|
Rockin' Doc Apr 04 2007 08:18 PM |
Damn, the Cardinals are just imploding. Their outfield defense in this series has been embarrassing.
|
OlerudOwned Apr 04 2007 08:29 PM |
Burgos just embarrassed Molina, and I have no sympathy for him.

I love watching a pitcher with a nasty curveball,and Sele's is nasty.
|
Frayed Knot Apr 04 2007 08:47 PM Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Apr 04 2007 08:48 PM |
Milledge, Franco, Burgos & now Sele poke their heads up for the first time tonight. One of the Newsday writers used to track every year the last player who was on a ML roster from the very beginning to get in a game. He'd make a note of it whenever the last guy got off the bench.
|
Johnny Dickshot Apr 04 2007 08:47 PM |
Easley?
|
Rockin' Doc Apr 04 2007 08:48 PM |
Sele gets Pujols looking with a 3-2 curve ball. Pujols glares at him for having thrown a curve in a blow out. I guess he expects people to just put it on a tee for him.
