Let it Snow!

3 straight days of games cancelled by snow in Cleveland. Has that ever happened before?
|
iramets Apr 08 2007 08:20 PM |
Well, for almost all of baseball history, the first week of April they were still in Arizona and Florida, so--no, probably not.

Binghamton had its entire opening four-game series in Akron postponed, some days for snow, others for "cold."

My 10 year-old's LL team has now played as many games as the Indians with another scheduled for this afternoon.
|

Indians and Seattle hoping to play two today,MLB afraid of more cancellations are thinking of altering the schedule and sending the Indians to Anaheim for that series supposed to start tomorrow night in Cleveland.
|
Nymr83 Apr 09 2007 01:09 PM |
they should really start the season with division games whereever possible, they're so much easier to make up later on if necessary because the team will be back in town at least twice
|
Yancy Street Gang Apr 09 2007 01:14 PM |
True, but since four of the six divisions have an odd number of teams, there are always going to be a bunch of games played between divisions.
|
A Boy Named Seo Apr 09 2007 01:15 PM |
They've already called today's games, too. My friend is a huge Indians fan and already took vacay in May for the series out here w/ the Angels. He's hoping Mother Nature knocks it off and lets the kids play this week.
|
Nymr83 Apr 09 2007 01:16 PM |
yeah but you can put those in southern cities, in particular i'd want FLA to play lots of home games in April because the place is unbearable over the summer.

The Indians are going to host the Angels... in Milwaukee. Hmmm...

Doesn't somebody in the Selig family still have an ownership interest in that team? (I assume that game would at least turn somewhat of a profit with concessions, parking, etc..)
|
Nymr83 Apr 09 2007 06:56 PM |
well, i'm sure the indians had to ok it

Not anymore, Selig's daughter sold it prior to last year to Mark Attanasio.

19,031. Attendance for the Indians "home game" in Milwaukee. Not sure if the fans in Milwaukee are that good, or they just wanted to see a really good game for once. That's a lot of peeps in the stands.
|
Yancy Street Gang Apr 11 2007 02:41 PM |
Heard a report on NPR this morning saying that there are a bunch of transplanted Clevelanders in Milwaukee and they enjoyed the novelty of seeing their favorite team playing a home game without having to travel back to Cleveland. I would guess that just about every Indians fan in Wisconsin made an effort to get there. (I wouldn't have guessed that there would be even close to 19,000 such people, though.)
|
Nymr83 Apr 11 2007 03:08 PM |
between Indians-fans-in-exile, milwaukee fans who just wanted to see a game, miscellaneous baseball fans in the area and cleveland fan who thought this was a great time for a road trip i think 19k is a fair turnout, i'd have expected less if i was making a guess beforehand but this isnt that crazy

An easy trip for Indians fans in Chicago, just 90 miles.
|
Yancy Street Gang Apr 11 2007 04:07 PM |
Good point. And there are probably more such fans in Chicago than in Milwaukee. (Only because I imagine that Chicago is a more tempting city to relocate to.)

Tickets are also being sold for $10 meaning that casual baseball fans can go see a MLB game without spending an arm and two legs for tickets. I don't care about the Indians or the Angels, but I'm only a little over an hour away from Miller Park...if it wasn't for the raging snowstorm we've been having all day, I would have seriously considered driving to see a game tonight at those prices.
|
cooby Apr 11 2007 06:39 PM |
lol, good thing it's under a roof. The Indians must feel like it's following them around
|
Nymr83 Apr 11 2007 08:34 PM |
transmonk, i'd guess you could get in to Miller Park for ~$10 every night.
|

You can get in the gates, top deck tickets are $13 apiece, outfield bleachers for $16, outfield box are $24 and infield box are $32 and up. Myself, I like box seats...and for the Indians games, all tickets are $10 on a first come first serve basis.
|
Nymr83 Apr 12 2007 01:53 AM |
at least at Shea i would choose the "bad" seats over field level. my favorite seats are the front rows of mezzanine behind the plate. if its a day game i'd even prefer to be further back under the overhang.
|
TransMonk Apr 12 2007 11:09 AM |
I don't mind being up if it's behind the plate. The best seats still available for tonight's game are seats comparable to Shea's inner loge section...which are good seats in either park. Those tickets are normally $36 for Brewers' games. If I were to go tonight with my wife and kid it would be $38 for all of us to get in the gates after parking. If I wanted those same seats for a Brewers game it would be $116. I imagine the $78 savings for pretty good views of MLB action is why the attendence has been decent for these games...although the attendence did dip to 16,000+ on Wednesday.

The annual 'Patriots Day' game in Boston was first delayed - from its usual 10AM starting time to noon - and now canceled. This had to fuck up not only the AL sked (Angels now have FIVE games to make up in cities they're not sked to visit again) but also a lot of Bostonites drinking plans for this state holiday. They are, however, running the marathon despite heavy rains and strong EAST winds for a race run almost entirely west to east. Oooh that's gonna be a bitch. Some 112 lb Kenyan might be seen airborn over eastern Mass sometime today.

Edgy DC Apr 16 2007 10:59 AM |
I was thinking it would be a greater advantage than usual to the smaller runners, or at least the shorter ones. Angels are in a tough situation.

Here's what the National Weather Service has for Philadelphia for the next two nights:
If that's right, then a game on Tuesday might be possible.

I think everybody should play in Milwaukee.

But Boston has been able to juggle their rotation to send Schilling, Beckett (who's had a good start), and Matsuzaka against the Yankees. Julian Tavarez may not pitch until May

I only listened to FAN for about 2 different 10-minute spans this morning, but both times I heard that the game had been called.
Unfortunately, that memo is getting lost in the flood of memos imploring them to do essentially the opposite: ie. schedule as many warm weather site games as possible.
|
Edgy DC Apr 16 2007 01:49 PM |
Sure. But I'm certainly not calling for more warm-weather sites.
|
Nymr83 Apr 16 2007 02:59 PM |
the call for more division games makes more sense. it would also make sense to try and have as any of the non-division games as possible played right before a mutual offday so that the visitor who is not returning to town all year can stay the extra day and finish it up
|
Frayed Knot Apr 16 2007 03:57 PM |
Unfortunately it's not so easy now to keep things intra-division because of the odd sized divisions and so on. Back with the old two-division formats all games during the first 6 weeks of the season was all east-v-east and west-v-west. And my point from earlier was that keeping things within the division is the exact opposite of what most seem to think should be the "solution" to this weather problem. A SD-v-LA or Ariz game would be a waste to many since they want all those cities to be hosting bad weather teams rather than each other.
|
Edgy DC Apr 16 2007 04:04 PM |
Fuck those people.
|
Yancy Street Gang Apr 16 2007 04:10 PM |
There really is no perfect solution to this problem. One thing they could do is start the playoffs on the Friday following the regular season instead of on Tuesday, like they usually do. So if the Giants aren't going back to Pittsburgh, and there's no open date that makes sense, don't reschedule it. And if it turns out that there are a few unplayed games that will have an impact on who makes the postseason, there will be time to play them in October. I'd think that most of the games will be able to be rescheduled during the season, and most of those that aren't won't end up mattering and won't need to be played during that buffer zone in October. If that means a few teams lose a few home dates, then so be it. Another possiblity would be to let the Pirates play an extra game in San Francisco. If the Giants get an extra home date, make them give the Pirates a bigger cut. After all, if it hadn't rained in Pittsburgh the Giants wouldn't have had the chance to schedule that extra game.
|
Edgy DC Apr 16 2007 04:21 PM |
I didn't mean to (1) suggest that there was a perfect solution, (2) suggest all games could be intradivision, (3) suggest that this be done at the same time as scheduing as many games in warm-weather or domed stadia. I made a suggestion, pushing an angle which MLB probably already highly values.

Kenya took the Men's division in Boston as Robert K Cheruiyot finished in 2:14:13. The top US male wasn't far off the pace, as Peter M. Gilmore finished eighth, at 2:16:41. He was seventh last year. In front of him was an Italian, an Ehiope, and five Kenyans. East Africa didn't fare so decisively in the Women's division as Russian Lidiya Grigoryeva finished on top, at 2:29:18 American Deena Kastor finished 5th at 2:35:09, behind two Grigoryeva, one of Centerfield's Latvians, a Mexican, and Kenyan.

they are more afraid of a frigid WS in Boston/Cleveland than they are of losing a game in April, also I'd hate to have teams get additional days off between the playoffs and the season to rest their rotation... I love that the first round rewards teams who blew away the competition by letting them setup their rotation at the end of September while teams who didn't lock things up sooner have to go with whoever is rested

The forecast isn't as bad as it has been, but tonight's game still seems rather iffy. I live about 30 miles from the Phillies ballpark and there hasn't been any rain yet today. The skies have been grey all day, though, and there's a heavy breeze. It might very well start raining within the half hour.
