I was away from online world for a coupla days but I watched the home opener and have been going over it in my head for two days, so I'm relaunching a self-centered tradition and likely re-hashing themes that have already been hashed.

  1. The Mets did their best to stay in this one, but it's hard to deny that the Phillies lost this one more than the Mets won it.
  2. The papers all tell me Rollins is a helluva guy, just the type I'd want on my team, but that error was a desperate attempt to do to much, trying to go to double up Reyes going to his right. He'd've done his team much better --- not to mention shown the faith in them that he espouses with his mouth --- if he took more care to get the sure out first, even though that meant letting the tying run score. Manuel did by not playing the infield in. And come on, the Mets gave them an out with the Valentin bunt.
  3. There were three options in confronting Howard
    1. Walk him;
    2. Go after him with a lefty;
    3. Leave Burgos out there.
    I think Randolph chose the right one, game-wise, but I was testing Burgos in fire, and maybe they'll be long-term benefits to having left him there. He made some good pitches early in the at-bat.
  4. KC (I think) is right. Mazzilli is looking like middle-aged mook. It's not as pronounced when he's sewn into his hand-tailored suits in the studio, but the sporty open-jacket and loose-tie look he had on for the on-field reporting was sad. I particularly hated that dicky-uncle waddayafuckinkiddinme? sarcastic smile he affected particularly when talking about lame pitch selections by the Phillies.
  5. That said, Geary's walk of Franco was egregious, and seemingly another Rollins-like case of not showing faith in one's teammates
  6. Wright's grinding right now, and doing a good job of it. He had some bad at-bats early in the game but still came back with that double. He has something like a 19-game hitting streak going and I can't remember the last time he's looked good. I get the idea he could grind out a modestly good season without ever being locked in.
  7. Reyes, meanwhile, continues to look bad and good in the same at-bat.
  8. I liked the winning part of it. But what a mess.

I praised Maz' tube gig the other day, I think.

I'm fickle.

This is a good observation and true, but look for him to break out of his funk in a big way. More sooner than later. He's got to.
He's David Wright, dammit!
