Where Mets Rank, 2007

Benjamin Grimm
Apr 13 2007 06:43 AM

We've had similar threads in previous seasons as we watch the current Mets climb various all-time lists.

So here we go with the 2007 round.

I'll start it off with this:

José Reyes, with his 3 triples so far this year, now has 43. He's in third place on the all-time Mets list, just two behind Bud Harrelson.

Mookie Wilson is in first place with 62. Unless José picks up on his 17-per-year pace, he'll have to wait until 2008 to become the Mets leading tripler.

Benjamin Grimm

And then there's wins. Tom Glavine won't ever pass Tom Seaver, but Bob Ojeda, Craig Swan, and Rick Reed have reason to worry this year:

2.Dwight Gooden157
3.Jerry Koosman140

And, wouldn't it be nice if Steve Traschel begins to feel some heat, too.

Are you claiming to know, Yancy, that Glavine isnt in the Mets' plans for 2036?

Benjamin Grimm

I'm hoping he's in their plans for 2032. It would be nice for him to come back for the 25th anniversary celebration of the 2007 World Championship.

That's "Consecutive Games Hitting," of course.

Frank J. Thomas (J.? As opposed to Frank "TBH" Thomas) is the sleeper there--amazin' that his streak held up as long as it did. I think that's a Mets' trivia question I never heard before: Which Met held the record for consecutive games hitting through May of 1970? I would have guessed Hunt, Kranepool, Cleon, almost anyone before I guessed our man Frank.

Also interesting is the spate of 1970s hitting streak. For eight seasons, they can't get past 18 and then in one year, three guys do it? Amazin'. There was no hupla attached to it that I can remember either. Look how dramatic this was: in May, Agee breaks Thomas's record that had stood for eight seasons, then in mid-summer breaks his own record, and finally in September Cleon breaks Agee's record. We're going on thirty seven year old memoiries here, but I don't remember hearing any of this natural drama at the time. I'm not sure if Murph and Ralph and Lindsay even knew whose record Agee broke.

Is there any reason to dispute this streak because it's occurring over the course of two seasons? The Nats announcers last night said that peeps are talking about David Wright's hitting streak, but it's not legit. I think Jimmy Rollins' streak last year was under the same circumstances. Pretty sure that Cal Ripken game streak didn't reset on Opening Days.

Edgy DC
Apr 14 2007 12:19 PM

A hitting streak is a novelty. I see no reason to dismiss it based on the novelty of it being over two seasons.

Nats announcers are trying to give their season the illusion of elevation by bringing down other teams and their good news.

Most consecutive scoreless innings?
Joe Smith is off to a nice start on both lists.

I think I read that Smith recently broke an ancient Mets record for most scoreless innings at the start of a career, formerly held by Dennis Musgraves.

Jose Reyes stole 17 bases in the month of April this year. That tied for the third best stealingest month in Mets history, and the most stealingy month of Reyes' career so far:

I hope Jose steals at least 67 bases this year. I'd rather see him as the single-season record holder than one-hit wonder Roger Cedeno.

Jose is also climbing the all-time ranks in runs and hits.

You don't think of Bobby Jones' Met career as being that long. Glad to see Jack Fisher remembered.

It's funny that only 13 guys have pitched more innings than Glavine has, and people are still debating whether or not he's a "Met."

I agree that there shouldn't be a debate. Of course he's a Met, but aside from Mets fans, I don't think many people (including the Hall of Fame Plaque Committee) will remember him as such.

According to Elias, Jose is the first infielder with 3 straight seasons with 60+ Stolen Bases since the modern stolen base rule was enacted in 1898

There's a lot more important stuff going on, but I'm glad that Moises Alou removed the ambiguity around the club hitting streak record. (Hubie and Piazza holding the "single-season" record and Wright with the "multi-season" record.)

Of course, if Moises gets hits in each of the next seven games, and another on Opening Day next year, then the ambiguity is back. (Sort of.)

David Wright is the first player in Mets history to have 3 seasons of 40 doubles or more. He's also the first player in Mets history to have 3 consecutive seasons of 40 doubles or more.
