I know a few here care about Hockey,it all starts tomorrow,I'm hoping that the Rangers will win but they face a tough test against Atlanta who have a dynamic offensive team, the Rangers are winning by playing great defence..should be a great series,Rangers win in six.

Eastern Conference

Buffalo Sabres (1) v New York Islanders (8) - Sabres win 4 - 2

New Jersey Devils (2) v Tampa Bay Lightning (7) - Devils win 4 - 1

Atlanta Thrashers (3) v NY Rangers (6) - Rangers in Six

Ottawa Senators (4) v Pittsburgh Penguins (5) - Penguins in 7,this should be a classic.

Western Conference

Detroit Red Wings (1) v Calgary Flames (8) - Don't know much about the teams out West,..Red Wings in 6

Anaheim Ducks (2) v Minnesota Wild (7) - Wild in 7

Vancouver Canucks (3) v Dallas Stars (6) - Canucks in 6

I'm hardly a big hockey fan but the playoffs just drive me nuts. They're too long and render the regular season meaningless (16 of 30 teams get in). There's no premium for winning your division or being the best team in the conference.

Ideas I kick around each year:
Drop a round of the playoffs, or go NFL style, with some first round byes for the best teams -- make that regular season count for *something.*

Change the first two rounds to best 3 of 5, with the low seed getting game #3 as their only home game.

If they must do best of 7 rounds, make it 2-1-2-1-1 instead of the riddiculous 2-2-1-1-1.

NBA has the same problem, its hard to take the season seriously when a team can literally (not like the yankee jokes) print their playoff tickets before the season starts

Rangers game was hyper-competitive. This should be a great series, provided they keep winning, of course.

Should be a craker OO,both tems have great offence,Rangers have better defence and goalie.

Rangers take both of the first 2 in Atlanta. Absolutely fantastic.

Sean Avery distracts people, he rattles people, and then he gets a game winning assist. Awesome.

Great result,I could say a lot of bad things about Sather but that trade for Avery was pure class and changed the season for them.

Jagr is playing like perhaps his best hockey in years, certainly his best as a Ranger, long wait for the next series sucks.

No reason why it took so long to review the Cullen goal,he's playing great too.

Game 1 tomorrow night is on Versus, you must have digital cable to get Versus, most Cablevision customer's do,about 80%.

Watching games on Versus can be a tad annoying, they show the score bar on the bottom of the screen, makes it hard to see the puck...

Sabres move on in six, those two quick goals in the second period were a killer.

I hope Shanny comes back next season,it's possible that we see Chris Dury as a Ranger next season.

The Sabres are going to have to actually leave New York State during the next round.
Not that Ottawa is all that far away, but in the first two series they played a total of 11 games at 3 different sites and never left their home state.

Ranger fans gave the team a nice hand after the game and the players returned the salute. I was at the game when the '85 Mets were eliminated from the division in '85 (no WC of course) and a similar scene unfolded.
Expectations play a big role in stuff like that and, under some conditions, a 2nd round exit would be considered a disappointment. In those cases, the post-elimination feelings wouldn't be so warm.

Talk about getting no respect from TV;
NBC is carrying Game 6 of the Eastern Finals today between Buffalo & Ottawa, but when the game goes into overtime they cut out to carry The Preakness. And not even the Preakness really, but the two-hour run up to the race where I guess they interview the horses about hwo many carrots they ate or something.

I'm sure the NBC affiliate in Buffalo hung with the game and maybe in a couple other markets too although I have no idea which ones. Hell, the network only had one of the two cities that was playing covered.

Ottawa won and advanced btw.

What is this NHL everyone keeps talking about?

Actually, yesterday, I picked up one those TV plug-in games that plays both NHL 95 and Madden 95 for three bucks at Kay-Bee. I couldn't get it to work on our living room TV, so I plugged it into the guest room TV last night and sat on the floor and played it. It was like I was back in college again!

We're not big on martyrdom either.

I saw the highlights of last nights game several times, I'd love to be able to
go to a game like that in Canada when the fans are so into it and they've been
in such a long drought of success. Live hockey is infinitely better than tv.

Talk about stuff, tell us what you think.

My friend is quite close to the family that owns the Ducks, so she invited me to go to a Stanley Cup party at the owner's house the other night. I'm not a big hockey guy, but it was cool to see it in person, see everyone else freak out about it, and really cool to meet the guy from the hockey HOF who follows this thing everywhere it goes to keep it from being defiled or smashed or broken by crazy and/or drunk peeps looking for some insane picture with it.

For those like me not real familiar with it, the trophy is like a giant, tiered wedding cake, each ring engraved with the names of the past winners. The cup itself at the top and the 3 rings directly below it are the oldest parts (the cup being by itself, the original trophy, as I understood). The five large, equal sized rings forming the base of the trophy are cycled out as new space for engravings are needed.

As you might can tell from the pictures, the bottom-most ring is only partially filled out with engraved names. When it is full and a new ring is added, they all get bumped up one place, with the top ring getting removed and placed in the hockey HOF. The HOF guy said that each teams' trip from new team at the bottom ring to being the top ring and getting cycled out takes roughly 65 years. Oddly enough, the bottom ring has a large engraving on it for the lost strike season, it reading something like (No Season Played, No Champion Crowned). It kinda surprised me that they'd "honor" that.

A couple of pictures.

She's cool. She's my 21-year old (just turned) neighbor at my last apartment. She's so young that a lot of the time she instantly cheers me up with her 21-year old sunshine and bubbliness, but most of the time she just makes me feel tired and old. She's the opera singer that took me to the Dodger/Met game on my last (32nd) birthday. Nothing between us, though she would totally change that.

I've got one of her taking a Gene Simmons-like tongue towards the trophy, but I'm not sure that's appropriate for... anyone.
