One of my best friends is a Braves fan. This Braves fan friend has a newborn son who shares a name with a Mets prospect. Thus I have to adopt this prospect and make sure he's never traded to the Braves.

Here are the vitals on Daniel Murphy:
Born: April 1, 1985
Birthplace: Jacksonville, CA
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 210 lbs.
Pos: 3B
Hits: L
Throws: R
School: Jacksonville University

He had 80 at-bats with Kingsport, Brooklyn, and the Gulf Coast Mets last season. He's suffered from a knee injury and tendinitis that have slowed down his career a bit. This season he's playing Florida with the St. Lucie Mets.

Yeah, the knee is the thing with Danny. He pulled most of his time last year at the St. Lucie camp. They're committed to keeping him at third, wouldn't let him put on a glove in a game. I'm glad he didn't end up in extended spring training again.

Good luck with him. Work on lateral movement.

[quote="Adam Rubin"] Prospect Daniel Murphy switching position to second base BY ADAM RUBIN DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Sunday, July 20th 2008, 11:56 PM Luis Castillo may be signed through 2011, but Daniel Murphy was astute when he asked to switch positions to second base. Murphy, the Mets' 13th-round pick in 2006 out of Jacksonville University who was blocked at third base by David Wright, asked Binghamton manager Mako Oliveras to move to the other side of the infield last month. After taking grounders at second base while on the disabled list with shoulder troubles, Murphy rejoined the Double-A squad on July 1 and started manning the position two days later. Through 15 games he had committed three errors, but Murphy has drawn positive reviews. "We gave him a crash course at second base and he's been playing there like he's been there forever," Oliveras said. "I'm very pleased, very happy with the way he's played. He's got the makeup to make the change from third base to second base. I'll tell you, I played both of them, and in the whole infield I think second base is the most difficult position to play - especially on a double play, you don't see when the runner is coming. He has done an outstanding job." Murphy, one of four B-Mets to participate in the Eastern League All-Star Game, has a .306 average with 11 homers and 57 RBI after going 0-for-3 against Connecticut yesterday. And it's his bat that figures to carry him to the majors. Assuming Castillo returns from a strained hip flexor and Damion Easley and Argenis Reyes don't falter, there isn't room at the big-league level now. But Murphy figures to be a factor by spring training, even with Castillo signed for three more seasons. "My theory is just catch it and get rid of it," said Murphy, who played second base through the 11th grade, about his double-play approach. "If I get hit, I get hit. That's the way it is. I'm pretty sure my pitchers would take something for me. So if they're going to throw a double-play ball and I take a hit, that's just the way it goes."

Good for him!

From BA's weekly "Hot Sheet' feature:

Just try to pin a position on Dan Murphy. The Mets have given him a long look at second base, but at least one scout contacted by BA says the move won't take. Murphy, 23, made four errors in the 14 games he's played at second, and scouts doubt he has the agility needed for the position. He can hit, though, batting .320/.485/.640 on the week with two homers, two doubles, seven RBIs, eight walks and only one strikeout. And Murphy should have enough bat for first base, third base or even left field, the three positions he played in addition to second in the last week. "He's a grinder who can really hit," one pro scout said. He's moved up to fifth in the Eastern League in RBIs and continues to hit lefties (.297, .831 OPS) as well as righties (.310, .867 OPS) .

MFS62, minorleaguebaseball.com has Murphy listed as a new member of the Zephyrs.

With David Wright solidly entrenched at third base, the Mets are likely best served getting Murphey accustomed to first base. If he has the stick for the position, which Baseball America seems to believe he does, then that would seem to be the best place for him.

With the resurgent Delgado getting olde, a first baseman that can hit could be of great value to the Mets in the future.

Willets, best of luck with your guys development. Hope to see him rakin' in Queens in the near future.

Your boy is kicking ass in the bigs. Nice going, pops! Found out he was a pretty good swimmer in HS, too.
