Oh, for X's sake, Braves-Mets IGT 4/20/07

These two teams are also playing tonight.

Renteria out, 5-3

"Larry, Larry" two run HR. Braves 2-0.

iramets
Apr 20 2007 05:27 PM

Pelfrey fans Francouer to get the side out.

2-0, top of the first.

Maybe this "Larry, Larry" taunt isn't working?

Mets go quietly in the bottom, still 2-0.

I take full blame for the poor start. If only I had gotten the KTE thread up before the top of the first inning. Poor Pelfrey knew not what awaited him.

Now, with the knowledge of what they are up against, I feel confident that the Mets will come back from this deficit.

Ground rule double. Not the plan.

Beltran shatters the perfect game.

Shatters it.

Looks like the Braves are back in command. 2006 was nice.

I'd have preferred Newhan whack one off the wall there but I'll take a walk.

Let's show some Mettle.

We're deader than Kitty Carlisle.

Deader than the crane pool forum

Sit down, McCann, you're excused.

Ugh, George Bamberger rolls in his grave.

Kid Carsey
Apr 20 2007 07:16 PM

Jeez, Feliciano walks in a run, Burgos walks in a run, Burgos WP's another
one in ...

The radio guys were yamnering before about Willie's desire to put Burgos into tough spots, but if that's the case I gotta question this in principle. You want a rookie who tosses fat pitches like an old lady in the park tosses stale bread to the pigeons to get experience--in games against your best division rivals? Why?

Or as I like to say WTF? Is this somehow smart? "Let's pitch this rookie in this particular game, because if he succeeds we'll have a star?" Yeah, and if he pitches like the nervous and inexperienced rookie he is, you'll have a fucking trainwreck.

Does Burgos have pictures of naked Willie and the sheep?

Does Burgos have compromising pictures of Willie or something?

Damnit Ira, you edited that in while I was writing!

Who would you put in, ira? And why?

Johnny Dickshot

Hey LoDuca -- BOO!!!!

Willets Point

Someone who's not walking the ballpark.

Johnny Dickshot
Apr 20 2007 07:49 PM

Hudson's on the other team.

Kid Carsey

Sorry, my target for my question wasn't clear. I go after that stale bread
like a pigeon and I get all excited.

Last chance for Streaky McStreaker coming here in the 9th. Hopefully he extends it with a 7-run homer.

Kid Carsey
Apr 20 2007 08:00 PM

I hope the streak ends, I'm sick of hearing about it and whether or not it is one.

He can start a new one tomorrow with 4-4, 7 rbi game.

If this game can be redeemed in any small way, it will be my joy in the image of Andruw (sic) Jones flopping on his belly while the ball bounces several feet away.

Hey, it's Mets' history at least.

Helps to go Green on Earth Day.

Willets Point
Apr 20 2007 08:11 PM

Should Green be put on notice for swinging for the fences and killing the rally?

Seems like the Mets hit an awful lot of warning track flies tonight, maybe
I'm just tired and cranky.

The two aren't mutually exclusive.

Gwreck

Cranky would be a good way to start.

1. LoDuca sure seemed to loaf after that first Wild Pitch that let Andruw score. Didn't seem like he realized at all that Andruw would take off from third.

2. Willie not putting in a righty to face Francoeur. Feliciano was in the second inning of work, he leaves him in to face Chipper, and then Andruw (curious), but for the bases loaded with Francoeur? Umm, maybe not the best idea.

3. Willie brings in Burgos in a spot where the game could spiral out of control if we didn't shut the door right there. Maybe at 5-0 it wasn't the closest game ever, but using Burgos over Smith (or even Heilman) seems to show, in my opinion, indifference as to the outcome of the game.

4. Moises Alou bangs one off the wall -- and winds up with a SINGLE! Damn, he is so freaking slow.

5. Not hitting.

6. At all.

The Jackie Robinson day festivities were nice. David Robinson (Jackie's brother) spoke before the game and had some graceful remarks (including ending with urging the Mets to victory). Rachel Robinson was there but didn't speak.

Strange: All of the between-inning music was Motown: My Guy, Baby I Need Your Lovin', The Way You Do The Things You Do, It Takes Two, This Old Heart of Mine, etc etc.

I don't mind him bringing in Burgos when he did. There was no right answer at that point.

Would that he would have had Burgos or Smith or another righty in before that, though. Agree with you there.

But the offense made it pretty irrelevant.

Willets Point
Apr 20 2007 10:39 PM

Well, the offense did eventually rally. Too little too late, but that still doesn't mean that being down five runs is better than being down seven runs when you have an offense that gives you hope to rally.

Willie shows inexplicable forebearance with Burgrodrojas.

- I didn't (and still don't) have a problem with bringing in Burgos there

- I was surprised LoDuca started. The hand is obviously bothering him (saw it on the checked swing) and with a day game after a night game today it seemed like a logical time to give him one extra day to heal.
He's also now something like 0 for his last 16 - something that may or may not be related to the hand/finger issue
