Notes and Observations:

  • This is cobbled together from media guides going back to 1966. Obviously, the Mets have had a board at least since 1961.

  • It's not until the Doubleday/Wilpon era that any directors are also listed as partners, implying that the Mets were entirely owned by Joan Payson, but I'm relatively certain that Walker, Lockwood, the unseen Bill Shea, et al. were minority owneres under Mrs. Payson.

  • I have some gaps between 1966 and 1973, and for those I relied on yearbooks, but the yearbooks are somewhat ambiguous, as they list officers on the same page as members of the board of directors. Al Weis and Casey Stengel are listed as officers, for instance, but I don't believe they were board members.

  • George Herbert Walker was the uncle of the former president and the great-uncle of the current president. His bios usually list him as co-founder of the team, so I imagine he goes back to the beginning.

  • While Weis, Bing Devine, and Jonnny Murphy are listed as officers, I'm gathering that Bob Scheffing was the first general manager elevated to a directorship, a tradition that continued with Joe McDonald until discontinued with the dawn of the Doubleday-Wilpon era, re-instituted with Frank Cashen's elevation in 1988 and ended again with the start of Fred Wilpon's presidency in 2003.

  • Lorinda DeRoulet is listed only as "Mrs. Vincent DeRoulet," a tradition that had grown at best quaint, and at worst anachronistic by the late seventies, and one that was forsaken by her mother Joan Whitney Payson throughout her reign, despite her husband Charles Shipman Payson, to my understanding, having been a more substantial man (read: "bigger big shot") than Vincent DeRoulet.

  • The chairmanship, under M. Donald Grant, was kept seperate from the presidency, under Joan Payson and succeeded by her daughter Lorinda DeRoulet, until the very last year before the team was sold, when Mrs. DeRoulet merged the two positions. It has remained merged since.

  • Mrs. DeRoulet got the presidency over her brother John Whitney Payson, who also joined the board (and presumably got a piece of the team) upon his mother's passing, but apparently had less interest than his sister in running a baseball franchise, as hard as that is to imagine.

  • There was a rarely noted purging of board officers after the championship season of 1986, after which now-longtime figures Saul Katz, Marvin Tepper, and Richard Cummins appear on the scene. It's not hard to speculate that this represents some sort of watershed in the team failing to achieve dynasty status. A more grounded observation would be that the continued presence of Katz and Tepper today also suggest that this is a moment of increased influence by current president Fred Wilpon.

  • Fay Vincent, 1994: Ban George Steinbrenner and get a directorship with the Mets. Good deal, but I'm kind of glad he didn't stick around.

  • I get the idea that when the arbitrator finally named a value for Fred Wilpon to buy out Nelson Doubleday as majority owner, he didn't have the dough together. At that juncture, not only do longtime directors Saul Katz and Marvin Tepper buy in, but junior members of both Wilpon's and Katz's families also got a share.

  • Mrs. Payson and Mrs. DeRoulet remain the only women who've ever served as directors.

  • If the team returns to giving a directorship to their general manager, I believe (though I'm uncertain) that Omar Minaya would be the first person of color to so serve.

Thats as far back as I got right now, can some one loan me a couple of grand for the 62 and 63 yearbooks or media guides? =;)

See, that's the problem, a bit of corporate confusion. While I think that's the board right there, they tended to list directors and officers together in the yearbooks, but seperately in the media guides.

There might be eight officers, six of whom are board members, or six board members, five of whom are officers. They're listed there with their offices, and are only noted as "director" if they aren't officers. But what of the ones who are officers but not directors (like Casey and Weis would seemingly become)? It's hard to tell. Carlisle, for instance, may be a director and may not. The media guides listed directors and board members in two seperate columns.

You mean George Weiss, of course, not Al Weis.

I hope you do.

Of course.

Re: The post-'86 purge -- Remember that the team was technically sold that year, with Fred and Nelson buying out Doubleday & Co., which owned most of the club. There was bound to be a change in the Board following such a move. Some of the pre-'87 members were probably D&C execs.

Edgy DC
Apr 23 2007 11:44 AM

Ggod point. I'm pretty sure that's what we're dealing with.

Benjamin Grimm
Apr 23 2007 11:46 AM

Nice work!

I may just steal some of this for the UMDB. I have some information about executives but it's kind of spotty.

Edgy DC
Apr 23 2007 12:05 PM

Well, I'd kill you for stealing my work, but then who would maintain the UMDB?

I'm working on (1) completing this table with the early years, and (2) making a seperate table for the corporate officers, and maybe continguing with every bureaucratic level.

Benjamin Grimm
Apr 23 2007 12:08 PM

You mean you want to track all of those rows and columns of faces from the back of the yearbook?

Wow.

Edgy DC
Apr 23 2007 12:21 PM

Yeah.

I think a database isn't complete until we have the names and biographical abstract on every fan at every game.

And then every exhibition game.

Johnny Dickshot
Apr 23 2007 01:13 PM

Exhibition games don't count. But I'm with you on the rest.

For some reason this position was first seen in the 78 guide, and then not again untill Keith Cedro in 1987. Interestingly enough a big deal was made about Cedro's role as he got an article in a program that year, and was a uniformed personel (no number though)

OK, suit quiz coming.

The following players, I haven't been able to figure out who the agents are for these players.

Ambiorix Burgos
Mike Carp
Marcos Carvajal
Ramon Castro
Endy Chavez
Mike Di Felice
Matt Durkin

Fernando Martinez
Lastings Milledge
Kevin Mulvey
Cliff Nagoette
Juan Padilla

Now that that is out of the way, observe the two columns. Column A has a Met (or a near-Met). Column B has agents. Corrrectly match the Met in Column A with the agent in Column B. Note that Column B is shorter, as there are a few agents with more than one Met on their roster. Those agents have the number of Mets they represent in parentheses.

Pelfrey was a Boras client when he signed after the draft. I believe the other Boras clients are Beltran (already mentioned), Scott Schoeneweis and David Newhan.
