Time To Bragg

My son-in-law is now at Fort Bragg, having returned from a year in Afghanistan. He is a Captain, an infantry company commander.
Some of you knew he was there, most didn't.

He was cut off for two weeks while under fire. He lost one of his Sergeants. You can't imagine what you feel every time the phone rings.

His Connecticut Guard unit will be welcomed home next Saturday. If you get local CT tv news, check it out.

To those of you who knew, thank you for your thoughts and prayers.

I didn't know, but you have my thoughts and prayers now.

Happy for your family, thank him.

It occurred to me this morning that this thing is now in it's fifth year, I know
an awful lot of people, and I don't think I know anyone else who has been
shipped off to Afghanistan or Iraq or has family serving there.

Just seems a little odd to me.

So how's he doing?

And you have mine now.

Thank you all.
I haven't had a chance to speak with him yet. That will be Saturday.

My daughter says he seems ok. The first thing the GIs did after landing at Ft. Bragg was to go out for a beer and a steak.
I'll provide a follow-up.

My daughter was raised properly. She is a Mets fan.
He is (gasp) a Yankee fan.
But now that she can exert her feminine wiles full time, hopefully she will be able to turn him from the dark side.

I am happy for the safe return of your son-in-law. My prayers and thanks go out to him and all of his fellow military men and women.

There's an old joke about returning soldiers where a GI is asked what is the first thing he did after getting home
- "Well you know, I hadn't seen my wife for two years"
- "Oh, of course. What's the next thing you did?"
- "I took off my pack"

Tell him thanks for serving.

I'll convey all your thoughts and thanks.

And in the meantime, I'd like to thank the CPF and its members for providing a place where I could suspend my feelings of the reality of his perilous situation, if only for a little time each day.

Update.

The unit, in in two chartered airliners, landed at Hartford Ariport Saturday at 3:30PM.
There were over a thousand people to greet them.
They landed at the US Army aviation support group hangar, where families were served soft drinks and snacks while they waited for the planes.
There were reporters from all three CT TV stations and numerous papers and radio stations. (It was also reported by CBS Radio in New York)
I found it interesting that while Governor Jodi Rell was there, it may have been the first time that a politician was present with so much media, and no speeches were spoken. Instead, she just joined the welcoming line and shook hands and exchanged greeting with each returning soldier. I felt that was a classy move.

A sad note: It was also announced that "those soldiers requiring medical attention" (as in wounded) would be coming home in (a) separate flight(s), but would given a similar welcome.

As for son-in-law Jeff, he was in good spirits. After picking up his bags, he and my daughter went off to eat some Chinese food. It had been almost ayear since he had some.

More on food. He said that when his unit was in that Afghanistani village, the only food they had was goat and raisins. He admitted it was probably better than some of the Army chow he had been served.

For the next three days, he will be back on post, clearing up paperwork and returning gear. Then, back to work on Monday.

Thank you all again for caring.

Just in case 62 didn't see Cooby's question, here's a bump.

Thanks for the bump, GSC.

When he reported back to work, they told him to take a few weeks off, so he went back to work this week.

He and my daughter took a short trip to EPCOT, which he had never seen.

A side story. About a year ago, I had told a casual acqaintence that he was going over there. I ran into her after he had returned. She told me that at last year's Memorial Day parade in her town, she had bought a red bracelet that she had worn every day for his safe return. She gave me the bracelet to give to him. He now wears it in the hope that all those serving overseas will also return safely.

I received a surprise email from my old college roommate last week. I hadn't heard from him since his oldest son graduated from high school almost 2 years ago. He said he had been cleaning out his old emails and noticed several old ones from me.

He is a Colonel in the US Army reserves. He told me that he had returned in February from 15 month tour in Iraq. He said he was writing to let me know why he had suddenly stopped responding to my emails.

I had no idea. I'm just glad that he made it back home safely.
