Tell me about your luggage

We need new bags desperately. Until just recently both me & Ms. Shot were using the ugly old stuff our parents gave us in tthe 80s as respective "get out of our house" gifts. Was shopping at Macy's yesterday and the prices for new luggo astounded me.

What you got? Like it?

I don't know the brand, but we got some bags at Sears a couple of years ago that didn't cost too much and are holding up well.

Try buying online....way better value.

Dude -

Marshall's.

Nice pieces of luggage (I think ours are 'Swiss Army Brand' but they have Ralph Lauren and lots of others), all sizes (overhead compartent carry-ons as well as check-it sizes) and wheels and extendable handles (don't discount that contemporary addition).

Prices starting at about $50.00.

If that ain't to your liking check out Costco, I've bought two nice large bags there - both with wheels/handles - within the last two years.

My advice would be to get a color other than black.

Marshall's is where this whole thing started. They had a display of bags just as we walked in a few weeks back and it reminded us that with a few trips coming up, we had to start looking for new places to pack things.

It had been so long since we bought luggage we backed off buying then and there but I suppose it's a possibility. Also looking online at sets.

What killed me were some admittedly gorgeous and cool Swiss Army bags at Macy's that were $900 each. WTF?!?

Anyway, I don't mean for this to be about me, but about your luggage. What brand? Good or shit? Where'd ya get it? Pros and cons? Wheels or spinners or no? hard cases or soft cases?

If you're traveling with mini-Dickshot, that dude will need a big suitcase for himself. Amazing how much stuff you need for a little one.

Got This as a gift a year and a half ago.

Can't recommend it enough. Standard size to fit in the overhead compartment but also expandable if necessary. The suit bag incorporated into the suitcase is possibly its greatest feature. Plenty of room inside -- I've tdone 4-5 day trips with the bag and no problems getting stuff in, even when those trips have required 3 different suits.

The quality/workmanship is top-notch. Very well put together.

Yeah that's the one I was looking at at Macy's -- only in green.

Sounds like Macy's was ripping you off. $900? Was it a set of 3?

atlantic suitcases, purchased from macy's for honeymoon. they seem to be fine.

if you buy em too nice, you'll get pissed when the airline thugs beat them up.

but dont get black. everyone has black luggage. it all freakin' looks the same!

Our brand is Travel Pro. Pretty good I guess. We bought on-line at luggageonline.com which has some nice deals.

Twenty-five year old American Tourister hand-me-downs. They look like hell,
easy to spot on the carousel, and I hope they last another twenty-five years.

I have a 10-year old Europe Through the Back Door bag, an earlier version of the convertible carry-on. Great for traveling light. As of Saturday it bears the Official New York Mets leather luggage tag.

Have an old funky suitcase from my parents. I was in Costa Rica about 5 years ago, traveling from remote place to remote place, when the zipper broke. I taped the damn thing up a couple of times and in my last day in the capitol city I figured on getting another one. Some guy at the hotel advised me that it was stupid to get a suitcase in Costa Rica so I was taken into some shoe repair place way across town where they installed a new zipper. So I spent the last day of my vacation dealing with my broken suitcase but that new zipper works great and I still use the suitcase.

Also got a Kipling for carryons or short trips. Love it.

This thread title sounds like a session opener by the best or worst therapist in the business.

Agree with one of Soupy's earlier posts in this thread. If you're going to do a lot of airline travel, pick an unusual pattern or color. Makes 'em easy to spot on the luggage return at the airport. (Or easy to find in the lost baggage room)

Edgy. Why would you have a gorilla jump on your luggage? Don't you pack it inside the bag? (Yeah. I remember the ads)

Good color, nice looking set.

What did you wind up paying?

Johnny Dickshot
May 04 2007 10:39 AM

Less than 250 for the set online (free shipping). The brand is Delsey which was one of the names on xpensive shit at Macy's deal. They didn't seem to be merchandising them as sets but separates.

Can't beat that with a stick.
