Recommend a Bar

I don't get out much anymore. When I do, I find that a lot of my favorite bars have closed down. I just found out that Tailor's Hall, a nice Irish place in my old neighborhood, turned into a Romanian place that has a DJ playing dance music on weekends.

You guys go out. Tell me where the good bars are. Tell me which ones to avoid.

It might help if you tell us what you like in a bar. Good beer or a good vibe? Live music or a live Mets game on TV? I suspect you're not looking for a swinging singles scene, but do you want a bar you can bring the family too or one with curmudgeonly old men bellied up to the bar.

The Bull Moose, where I drank so much of the Piazza Era, is also gone.

I cannot help you.

Tell me what you like. Tell me why you like it. Even if it's not my cup of tea, someone here would probably enjoy it.

I saw where Zum Schneider won a battle with its landlord and so is continuing to serve giant vats of frosty golden Bavarian goodness on the LES. Good time of year to visit!

The Riveria (225 West 4th at 7th) is a Red Sox haven. They even have a clubroom downstairs, with a password needed for entrance (seriously).

When did Red Sox fans become such snobs...a fucking password.....shove it up your arse.

They probably don't want Yankee fan thugs sneaking in and killing their buzz.

Was a Red Sox haven.

Apparently they had a great bartender there who fostered the proSox atmosphere but got canned, so now NYC Sox fans find other haunts.

I liked Down the Hatch, which is about 2 blocks from the Riv. Maybe a little collegey for most people's tastes, but you can catch a game and get some wings and they have cheap beer.

I used to like Niagara (7th and A) quite a bit. Great jukebox/music, good beer selection...but then it became way too popular.

There's a place in Hell's Kitchen that I went to to watch the Mets that I liked quite a bit but haven't been there forever. I remember there being several bars in that area (9th/10th Aves) though that were pretty good.

There's a place in my hood called The Turkey's Nest which I'll go to occasionally. It also has the added benefit of selling beer to go (no, seriously).

Where in NYC are you CF?

Down the Hatch, along with Off the Wagon (same ownership) are def. college drinking bars.

Try Heartland Brewery in Union Square.

Just don't drink the beer.

Kidding -- kinda. Their beer is made offsite and their "pints" are more like 14 oz. Get ripped -- not ripped off!

Rudy's (627 9th Ave) is a great dive bar, and they have free hotdogs. And their beer is incredibly cheap.

A good but small sports bar is Standings Bar (http://www.standingsbar.com/) in the East Village (43 East 7th Street). They only serve beer, and they have free pizza every Friday and free bagels every Sunday. And an incredible number of TV's, given how small the place is.
