Does anyone really care what Barry Bonds is up to besides ESPN? There's
a Barry on the hill too, you may have heard of him ...

O. Perez (3-2, 3.41)
B. Zito (2-3, 3.52)

I care, one of the best to ever play is about to break one of the most revered records in sports,Selig should care,he helped create the monster.

Kid Carsey

One vote for Bonds.

Actually, if you're into the home run countdown start a thread since it's getting
closer. I remember the night Hank broke that record, I'll be sad if it's broken by him.

Were you not sad that Hank broke Ruths record,I ask because apparently from what I read and hear a whole lot of Americans were pissed that Aaron broke...

Mostly those were the racists.

I hope Barry Bonds breaks his ankle, and soon.

No, not a lot.
A handful of racists plus some Yanqui fans who get upset whenever one of their records goes out the window - but, by far, they were not the majority.

There are also always some fans (particularly in baseball) who think that everything was better back in the good old days and that a modern player breaking anything must mean it's tainted. Rose breaking Cobb's hit record ran into some of that.

I'll be beaming myself if Perez outshines Zito tonight.

Count me in among those hoping we lay a serious smack down (what, our $76 million wasn't enough?!?!) on Zito tonight.

mi: >>>Were you not sad that Hank broke Ruths record,I ask because apparently from what I read and hear a whole lot of Americans were pissed that Aaron broke<<<

Nah, I was only like 11 or 12. I was aware that Aaron took thousands and
thousands of more AB's to do it and Babe Ruth wasn't anyone to me but
a legend which really even now is still kinda true to me if not more so.

I still think Mr. Bonds isn't out of the woods yet with respect to just how dis-
picable a bullshit artist he is. He does seem to have a teflon-coated knack
about him that will eventually bite him in the booboo imo.

Someone start a Bonds HR record thread.

But there does seem to be an OJ-like gap between the way he's viewed by blacks and by whites.

The ballpark grass looks synthetic.

Omar impresses. Isn't he 40?

which i find strange considering he is breaking a black man's record, if he were chasing pete rose (well, ok, if he were chasing a white guy people actually like...) i'd expect the difference, here i'm not sure why it exists.

Edgy DC
May 07 2007 08:39 PM

I guess because he's a black man accomplishing great things and the media is generally painting him as a villian. Hank Aaron is an abstraction in this context.

Last year, I just though Ollie looked silly up at the plate.

Silly me. Dude can rake.

Edgy DC

Oliver can hit some.

Zito's curve is breaking like a sonovabitch, and he hangs in there and bangs it back up the middle.

Does the Giants PA announcer have to act that excited for every batter? I'd imagine it would get grating pretty quickly.

Bonds has a .524 on-base percentage. That's a big number.

Gary is complaining that since it didn't hit the fan it should be a double. To me it's still hard to tell if it hit the top of the wall or not.

Oooh great shot there. It hit the corner created by the wall and the higher edge behind it.

May 07 2007 09:32 PM

He wasn't even close with those arms...

Edgy DC

I'm getting the Gigante broadcasters and there's been a nasty fan argument going on this half inning being picked up by their mics. Any of that bleeding into the Met booth?

Batty31
May 07 2007 10:37 PM

I didn't hear any of it..then again I have the volume on low.

TransMonk
May 07 2007 10:44 PM

I don't think it's a fan argument...those fans have been giving the business to LoDuca all night. Kind of harsh stuff, too.

Batty31
May 07 2007 10:44 PM

Kline just tossing his glove in the dugout reminds of the time he threw it in the stands in a game against the Mets many years ago.

I've got the radio on loud (in the next room actually) and not hearing a thing from the fans. What are they saying that's so fascinating?

TransMonk
May 07 2007 11:05 PM

To me, watching the same broadcast as Edgy, it sounded like there are a couple of fans near the SF TV booth that have been yelling at LoDuca all night. Something about hoping he had a pre-nup, something about the girl next door, all stuff about his public break up.

Willets Point

Maybe a New Yorker was there, because somebody kept retorting, "SHUT DA FUCK UP!"

And a few moments later:

"SHUuuuuT...! DA FUuuuuCK! UP!"

Maybe Red-Ass didn't lose his bat entirely by accident.

I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that the winning pitcher of this game would fit well in the Mets rotation, and he was available just for money last winter. I'd feel the rotation would be less on the bubble if Pelfrey & Perez could work out their kinks without the pressure of being the #3 & #4 pitchers and that they could be our contingency plan when someone like Hernandez is hurt instead of scraping up the likes of Park or Sosa. I imagine the opposing teams would be shitting their keks if the Mets came to town and league ERA leader John Maine was the #5 pitcher. Oh well, I guess we have to deal with what we're dealt, but the last two losses could have been wins under different circumstances.

Edgy DC
May 08 2007 09:32 PM

I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that the Mets still lead the majors in ERA, by a not insignificant amount, that six of the nine runs were un-earned, and that Molina's first homer was really a double.

We outscored Zito and the Giants 4-3 in earned runs.

Rockin' Doc
May 08 2007 09:53 PM

San Francisco grossly overpaid for Zito in my opinion. I wanted to see Zito in a Mets uniform, but not at the price it ended up costing to sign him this winter. I think that over the life of his contract the Mets will be glad not to be saddled with his salary.

I'm accustomed to Yankee fans thinking that it's only money that stands in the way of any player they desire to obtain, but I would hate to see Mets and their fans start to adopt a similar mind set.

Johnny Dickshot
May 09 2007 08:14 AM

I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that Barry Zito on his best day probably wouldn't win behind the defense the Mets played in this game.

But it's only almost perfect here. When Jose Reyes led off the game, the scoreboard showed his name, his stats and a photo of a Jose Reyes, but not this Jose Reyes. Instead, they dug up a photo of Jose A. Reyes, the Mets minor league catcher who is playing for Binghamton.

Funny.
