Good article from this week's SI.

Whack.

Takes a healthy cut at the bench coach who replaced him.

I find BV fascinating. I was afraid at first that article was only going to repeat the old stories but found some new ground too.

Great read, takes a nice cut at Hardgrove too,I like the idea of a Volvo bringing the relief pitcher in from the pen...great promotion from V.

I advocated Bobby's firing strongly, but that was then. With no remaining Mets from his time, he'd be my ideal manager for this team.

I mean, talk about articulate and honest and entertaining and smart and visionary....

OTOH, this is a little troubling:
"You know what I'm really surprised at is that when teams are interested in signing a guy [from Japan] they don't call me," Valentine says. "Information is power, and I got a lot of information here, so I can make other people more powerful here if they want it."

Does he have any idea why teams wouldn't call him? "I don't know," he answers. "I really don't."

Might have something to do with your ecstatic praise of Kaz Matsui's ability to play shortstop, doncha think, Bubby?

He was right about Yoshii and his comment that Japan could become a source of effective short relievers has certainly come true.

To me BV would need more input in the makeup of the team to get it where he truly wants it. I'm not sure, for instance, that he'd click with this particular bunch. But when I own an expansion team, he gets my first call and a blank check.

I think Bobby's "scouting report' on Matsui were always more glowing from the offensive side...if fact, I remeber specifically him saying that Matsui's ability to drive the ball to the opposite field would result in him baing a doubles machine.

Irocically, it Derrek Lee's dad (leon Lee) that really was the baseball guy most resposbible for the Mets' signing Kaz, which was why he was given the Cyclones job.

Yeah, I think Valentine's comments regarding Kaz Matsui would have been obtained in a less-than-official capacity given his shitcanning.

What's become of Leon Lee since his alleged sexual indiscretion?

I'll grant you "more glowing" if that's what you remember, but he definitely wasn't warning the Mets off about his D: "Yeah, he's a doubles machine but this guy will kill you in the field--very little range, cant catch a ground ball to his right to save his life, and he doesn't have the arm to throw from deep in the hole"? I don't think so.

SI and Gary Thorne seem to have a tough time decoding sarcasm, baseball-style.
