To the right is the population of the Mets active roster, a population that could change by sun-up if we find out the condition of Orlando Hernandez and Jose Valentin. Maybe Heilman, I don't know.

I want you to imagine, one at a time, each of these players has gone down --- each scenario independent of the others --- and pretty much complete this sentence: "If ________________ goes down, I activate _______________ and give his role/at-bats/innings to ____________."

A couple of caveats:

1) It is permissable --- I can't see why it isn't adviseable --- to give a single answer for the five starting pitchers. It's probably lazy to do the same for the bullpen.

2) No trades are an option in these scenarios. You must reload from within.

3) You can pull from New Orleans, Binghamton, and healthy guys in Extended Spring Training. Don't screw with me and call up Matt Durkin from Savannah.

4) If you do choose to activate a guy who is not on the 40-man, normally I'd addtionally challenge you to name who you'd remove from the roster. But the reality is that the Mets have several guys out with long-term injuries who could be transferred from the 15-day ot the 60-day disabled list under such scenarios. So pretty much anybody is fare game, except as noted in (3).

5) You can give a guy's role to multiple guys. No reason, if Alou goes down (coming soon to a ballpark near you), you can't give his job to a Chavez/Milledge platoon.

A couple of the tougher ones:

If Wagner went down, Heilman would get the closer role. Smith would be promoted from a situational/middle inning righty to the primary setup man role. Jon Adkins gets put on the 40 and called up to fill out the 'pen.

If Valentin, Reyes or Wright went down, Easley would get their immediate at-bats with Hernandez (Valentin/Reyes) or Fernando Tatis (Wright) getting called up. Buster Olney in his blog today said that "it's not hard to imagine the Mets trading for Ronnie Belliard." Wouldn't be shocked to see a trade if one of these 3 went down.

If any of the starters go down, the preferred order of recall is Park, Sosa, Vargas, Humber.

If any righty reliever went down, Adkins would be recalled as a stop-gap until Mota comes back.

If Schoenweis or Feliciano went down, I'd still recall Adkins and wait for Mota. There are very few lefty options (Willie Colazzo is the only one that comes to mind) in the minors.

Alternate options for replacing a starter can be found in calling up a reliever and bumping Sele or Schoeneweis into the rotation.

"If Tom Glainve goes down, I activate Sosa and give his role/at-bats/innings to Sele."

I'd give the start to Sele,if that goes bad then Soa is up next.

The same I would apply to the other starters, although I would let Sosa go in Maine's place.

"If Delgado goes down, I activate Carp and give his role/at-bats/innings to Franco"

Franco couldn't start everyday so I'd give Carp the spot and also try Green at 1st with Endy playing RF.

Not sure if I am doing this right?

Very right.

For Delgado I'd promote Johnson or Ledee and use whichever player as a reserve outfielder.

I'd then let Endy start in right field and move Green to first base. Franco would retain his veteran PH role.

"If Alou goes down, I activate Ben Johnson and give his role/at-bats/innings to Chavez/Johnson.

I'm thinking here that these injuries are somewhat long term.

"If Castro goes down, I activate Mike DiFelice and give his role/at-bats/innings to DiFelice."

Mike is having a more than decent go in NO.

Yeah, I think Alomar's the better callup if Lo Du goes down, and DiFelice if Castro goes down, as maybe MDF can help Pelfrey with his adjustment.

Never really thought about Pelfrey, but it would not be the worst thing in the world for Mike D to be here with him.

"If Billy Wagner goes down, I activate Adkins and give his role/at-bats/innings to Smith ."

I've thought about this and I would have no problems in giving Joe a shot at closing games.

Yeah, I'm losing faith in Heilman with every outing. I'd rather see how Smith or maybe even Shoenwiess does as a closer. And I agree wtih Gwreck's Pitching ideas.

If any OF goes down, I'd activate Millege. Endy is too good of a spark off the bench, that with endy starting, I think our bench would be significantly weakened.

For Wright, I'd rather give his job to Newhan, while calling up Hernandez.
For either Reyes or Valentin, give their job to Easley while also calling up Hernandez.

And as for Catchers, bring up Alomar, because I've pretty much think Pelfrey has to go to AAA already and work with DeFilice there.

If any Beltran/Alou/Green went down I'd call up Milledge and start him in their place.
If Delgado went down I'd move Green to 1B and call up Milledge to start in RF.
If Valentin/Reyes went down I'd start Easley and call up Gotay to be a backup infielder
If Wright went down I'd call upon Fernando Tatis and I'd start him.
If LoDuca went down I'd panic, because i couldn't name another catcher on the 40-man and Castro shouldn't start EVERY day

If a starter goes down I like Sosa, Vargas, then Humber with the caveat that if the injury looks long-term I'd be more inclined to go to Humber (he's the only 1 of the 3 i see as a longterm starter with the Mets so I'm in no hurry to bounce him up and down for a week or two.)

Remember, Milledge is on the DL and will miss the next six to eight weeks.
