Major League Record Set Tonight

Braves called up minor league catcher Jason Saltalamacchia today (McCann got hit in the hand with a bat backswing the other day). Saltalamacchia becomes the first ML player ever with a 14-letter last name. Stuff like this is important and should always be noted. In fact, this might be the most important 'name' record since David Aarndsma replaced Hank Aaron as the first alphabetical player. Braves beat the Phils.

more importantly, salty is on my NL-only rototeam and is a welcome relief from starting the likes of Bowen and Miller in my 2nd catcher slot

I just checked Retrosheet and it happened in April of 2004! Actually, I believe I was hospitalized that day so that may explain why I missed it.

I saw Saltalamacchia playing last night on TV. The name on the back of his jersey went from elbow to elbow.

The Reds alwas seemed to have the biggest uni letters --- something like 4 1/2 inches --- and a name like Paul Householder's could seemingly build an arc completely enclosing his number.

Jason Saltalamacchia (at 19 letters) still does not beat William Van Landingham (20 letters) for longest first and last name combo.
