Which Simple Minds tune won't you forget about least?

EDIT -- Option 1 should read "Promised You a Miracle" -- since I can't edit my poll, "Book of Brilliant Things" should be a write-in candidate (and a strong one!)

1) Promised You a Miracle =(EDIT!)

2) See the Lights

3) Don't You Forget About Me

4) Alive & Kicking

5) All the Things She Said

6) Up on the Catwalk

7) Speed Your Love to Me

8) Waterfront

I'm weighing a write-in for the pre-video "New Gold Dream."

I went with Alive & Kicking....would have liked if Belfast Child was on the list..

Note Option 1 is actua;lly "Promised You a Miracle" and not "Book"

I almost threw Belfast Child in there, but thought I was getting heavy with choices already. I coulda gone 12 deep Easley.

Yeah, it's risky introducing bands with a big enough legacy that their greatest hits album actually contains all hits. But you're all about risk.

The Minds were so wack that they released one of their best singles --- "Mandela Day" --- under an alternate band name and guaranteed its relative failure. I think they were number two or three on the EDC Ranking of Celtic Soul-Rock Bands.

I loved them, right up there with U2 and INXS for me..they also courted controversy with some political songs ,Mandela Day was blasted by some critics for lyrics like " Mandela's Free" while Nelson was still in jail...Belfast Child caused a stir in the media too....some felt that Kerr should keep his nose out of the North..the band Therapy? slammed them....

Their other problem is that fans like me could confuse "Promised You a Miracle" with "Book of Brilliant Things" quite Easley.

Just about all their songs had

* big echo-y drums

* high-pitched synth or guitar noodling

* passionately desperate vocals sung with arms spread apart like a production of Godspell.

So,so true..I think the arms spread apart was definitely used by quite a few front men in the 80's,made a brief comeback with the awful Creed in the 90's...saw Simple Minds in concert....great at an outdoor venue....

I went with the Breakfast Club song...I'm not a big Simple Minds fan, but I consider that song to be their Stairway to Heaven.

Alive and Kicking is a better song, but I cant stand those backing vocals.

Really? I thought she was pretty terriffic. I'm thinking I'm going to vote for that one, but I have to wait until tonight to view the youtube clips.

Kerr said he asked that singer to join the band because she was his favorite female singer. Then Chrissie Hynde whacked him in the back of the head.

I had no idea when I started I'd vote for "Speed Your Love to Me."

I received "Sparkle in the Rain" as a gift from some chick in 1985. I listened to it a lot during that spring & summer. A lot.

"Don't You Forget" is of course not a Simple Minds song though Kerr is said to have invested the "La, la-la-la-la," verse extemporaneously.

The female part is okay...although Chrissie Hynde would have made Alive and Kicking way cooler. The backing vocals I was thinkng of are all of the Ooooh, oooo nah nah nahs that are going on. I guess that was his gig, but not my favorite.

I like these polls, I find it interesting to review these songs 20+ years later to find out which ones stood the test of time. The content of a song is usually less important to me than the way it sounds when it's recorded.

I went with Alive & Kicking. I don't like Breakfast Club, so by association I eliminated Don't you Forget About Me from consideration.

Looks like Jim Kerr still has the poses....

All polls lead to Molly Ringwald, don't they?

Edgy MD

Yeah, I went with "AH-live and Kicking" because

1) Jim Kerr hanging out at the top of a Scottish cliff in tights.
2) His little boy face.
3) The climactic drum fill leading up to what you think is going to be a powerful line to open verse two, and then he just sings, "WHU?"
4) Clarence Clemens on backup vocals.

Are very important polls exclusively about 80's bands? I missed their creation.

Not quite, but that was a very crucial and important time.

I've always loved Alive and Kicking. My second choice would be All the Things She Said.

I object to the non-inclusion of thier show-stopper "Don't You (Forget About Cle')."
